How to - make your own airbrush thinner (and cleaner..revisited) for acrylic paints

This is an expensive hobby, today I show you how I make my own airbrush thinners using simple ingredients that will save you an absolute fortune on branded products and I also quickly revisit making airbrush cleaner. I hope you find this video useful.

Hi Terry, love the videos. In case some people struggle with the bottles. Plastics for use with most alcohol based products is HDPE. The cap on the bottle is a "flip top spout cap" I believe the bottle and cap can be purchased for £3 on eBay in the UK. Thanks again always informative.

One of the benefits of the alcohol is that it beads up the water to sheen off. I Add a 1/4 cup of alcohol to the auto windshield washer container and 1/8 cup of vinegar and then fill with water. It will clean the windshield and also when raining will make the water bead up and make it easier to see. One time our wiper motor burned out in the rain while driving down the road. I pulled into a pharmacy and purchased a small bottle of alcohol 71% and poured it on a rag to wipe all over the windshield glass. I then drove to a bank that was closed to clean the glass dry and reapplied the alcohol and wait for it to dry. Then (with no wipers cleaning the glass of rainwater) we were able to easily see good enough to drive 10 minutes to an auto parts dealer, buy a new wiper motor and drive another 30 minutes home.

Well done Terry. Coming from Scotland you must be able to use the minimum of flow improver and fluid retardant. It's so b*****dy cold!! That said, I'll try the concoction and see if I can improve my paintings. As I have said elsewhere, to save a tad more I have made my own distilled water following youtube videos. You can make a litre in about 40 minutes. Why not make a boil in the bag meal at the same time so that you don't waste all that energy on the distilled water only! :-)

good video, my brain tells me that flow improver and retarder are like the thinners, a mix of the same stuff. if they are both glycerin then maybe one or the other would be fine? or maybe just a bit of glycerin

Terry, thanks for the info, most helpful but one question.... can you confirm the capacity of the bottle that you used to make it in, it looks like a 250ml bottle, but to be accurate it would be good to know especially when only adding 5mls etc.... thanks again well done.

The bottle I used holds 270ml
