Making your own rubber stamps is a simple DIY project that doesn’t require a lot of tools. I used a special carving block and a lino cutter to make my stamps, but you can get started with some erasers and an X-acto knife as well.
What you’ll need:
- Carving block or erasers
- Lino cutter
- X-acto knife
- Cutting mat
- Pencil
- Wood or other material to make handles
- Lacquer or clear nail polish
- Ink pad
If you make one of your own, I'd love to see it! Send me a picture on Instagram @craftswithellen.

Very good video. many could take a leaf out of your book. No idle chatter, everything ready and explained clearly. Tests shown and improvements noted.

This is the best video I have ever watched on KZfaq!! Thanks! I’m so excited to make my own stamps, you were so informative, fun, and gave lots of alternatives! I love that you showed the process of you learning how to cut stamps!!

I've actually used a block like that and the same cutter to make a print in grade 8. We got to stamp a ceiling tile, everyone in that class for the year.

Great video, really nice stamps. I'm gonna give this a try. Love the hand carved handles you foraged from the forest 😀

This is great! I'm blown away how you took such a simple shape of the little puff ball and turned it into something so creative. These turned out awesome! I haven't tried that pink speedy carve material, but both it and the erasers left great prints. (Great video editing as well - fun and super easy to follow!)

+DN Handcrafted Thank you! Glad you liked it :) I'm pretty pleased with how the stamps came out. The speedy carve is super easy to carve and prints great, but I'm guessing the lino works better for bigger stuff.

“You can buy premade handles or use blocks of wood. But I just went out into the forest and found a big stick” is truly one of the cutest things 😂

Go and watch a few videos from the Japanese stamp carvers, it's quite remarkable what some of them can do with a simple snap off type of knife.

So cool! Very interesting project Ellen! It is amazing that the classic technique of pencil tracing over is so simple and effective - I have had similar issues when I was making coasters - I did not get the perfect lines, but still enough to see :) but I bet you used a rather soft pencil! Great work :) I see you have started just several months ago, so keep it up!

Thanks! Yeah the pencil tracing worked great. I actually used a normal medium hardness pencil this time. The carving block is so soft that it takes it over very well. When I was transferring images to wood for pyrography I did use a very soft pencil (5B) though. Just need to figure out what works for each material :)

You should try MDF (medium density fibreboard) sometime. It's great for crisp detailed stamps.

When using the xacto knife, how do you get the base part out after cutting the sides? Do you cut with an angle?

Oh wow! This was awesome 👏 thank you for sharing your process. I love how you made your own handle. I recently purchased so beautiful 50 year old stamps from India made from wood. They are gorgeous, but they don’t stamp well so I was looking for a way to recreate them. I read somewhere a while back that you could also use that pink tray that comes when you buy meat...not sure how I feel about that one yet 😂 Thanks again!
