This video is about HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SUCCULENT SOIL my basic succulent soil mix ...nothing fancy stuff added just basic.
Here I have used large granular sand (80%)
Regular gardern soil ( 20%) no organic material like compost ,vermicompost,bonemeal,fertiliser etc added.
This potting mix is gritty,porous,well draining and dries much quickly making it an ideal potting for succulents.

Thank you so so much Raghu :) Big thanks for the super thanks this means alot as a creator :) you made my day ... yes this is the most important part THE SOIL MIX to be honest when i started in 2015 keeping succulents i had a very tuff time as i didn't have the right soil mix ..every alternate week used to have either root or stem rot ...there was a time i was almost about to give up as it was getting depressing by the day ....but i thought to give a last try ...didn't have any idea whats perlite -whats pumice in those days .. that's when the aquarium sand came to my recuse had a aquarium at home used a mix of that and then it was no looking back... it so simple so i decided i will share this knowledge as much as possible so others don't have to deal with the same thanks once again Raghu :)

This is great, thank you! I will also be using crushed red lava rock, filtered between 1/4" and 1/6"(ish, I have to drill holes for my filters) along with the coarse sand. I've got my sledgehammer ready wish me luck! Lava Rock is incredibly cheap, I sterilize it by pressure cooking it, lay it out on towels to dry. It's really good for drainage and easier for me to get than big bags of coarse sand.

Hi. I realised that some of the succulents are not planted in a well draining soil. So will it be okay if I repot these now because when monsoons arrive the humidity becomes a real problem. These are mostly kalanchoes, sedums and ghost plant which are doing quite well. I’ll appreciate your expert help.

I’m confused about garden soil. I’m assuming you don’t mean soil out in my yard. I’m thinking you mean, soil you buy for flower beds outside from a garden center and not potting mix out of a bag? I’ve never bought soil that wasn’t potting mix. Is it different than top soil or is it the same? I’m also thinking topsoil might be finer and we don’t want the finer stuff. And this is fine for indoor plants? Thanks for the best channel.
@LushGardener
@LushGardener Жыл бұрын
Hi Kelly thanks for watching 😊.. yes it’s bit confusing when it’s come to soil ….so let’s say you can refer my soil ( which I refer as garden soil ) as soil you would find in your yard …I don’t buy soil … I gather it from outdoors when there’s some work going on they pile up all the soil from beneath the ground ..that’s what I collect…. I know what you referring to the potting mix or the soil in the gardening store …no this is just soil from earth nothing mixed …. the soil or potting mix that we receive at garden centre is more likely a pre mixed soil with other stuff like cocopeat,fertiliser etc …maybe it’s good for other plants but most likely not ok for succulents.. yes the fine soil that falls of the filtering can be used for foliage plants ,flowering plants ,veggies ,herbs,seedlings etc as this is gonna be further mixed with cocopeat hence it getting compact is rare …

Thank you very much sir. This video have learned me about the real well drained potting mix for the succulents. But how much nutrition will the plant get from that much soil. I have enough doubts about how much nutrition will be retained in that small amount of soil and for how long.

thank you so much for watching sir …..it’s been couple of years I stopped adding fertiliser or any nutrients….during the growing season once in a while I add pond water or aquarium water that too once in 2 months only growing season ….so far I haven’t had any issue related with nutrient’s for example I didn’t see any succulent being unhealthy due to lack of nutrients ..succulents prefer very lean nutrient soil just like cactus hence I tried to create a soil mix that resembles a lot like arid mountain soil ……. succulents in nature grow between rocks or cracks of rocks with very minimal soil 😊 so far things have been good 😊

I think it's like 4 or 5 💵 for a pretty good size bag! They do sell aquarium sand at the dollar store & Dollar General, but it's a lot smaller bad. @@LushGardener Of course. I purchased the soil for succulents from the local hardware store but I assume during shipping and handling, there was a lot of fine dirt/dust. After transplanting, the succulents were great for a while but as they got bigger and needed more accessible water, I saw the soil getting compacted and the plants getting under watered followed by root rot occurring at the bottom of the pot. When I filtered out the fine dust, used the sand, pebbles, and perlite, the little succulents responded beautifully. I’d like to do the big plants now, but would rather not torture them in the learning process or lose them all together. I’m also curious what that fine dust is good for as I’d hate to waste it but know better than to just throw it into the next empty pot I find. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply previously!

because succulents do not need a very organic soil.. apart from that succulents tend to go dormant in different seasons as per your environment. For example, Echeverría will be going dormant in winters so it does not require any fertilisers. If your soil has compost , it is going to be sitting in the pot, the succulent will not be using any of those nutrients. When there is excess nutrients in the pot, it will damage the succulent apart from that it is going to increase the risk of fungus or mold and like in your case, mealy bugs, and compost can cause mealy bugs or pest issues in succulents. That is why I don’t use both … succulents need poor nutrient soil

yes mam the homemade mix we make turns out expensive we have few plants compared to nursery and we don’t realise while making in small batches but if you make a bigger batch our mix is very expensive … apart from this most of these plants we see is usually keeps moving so cocopeat is less expensive for them and easy to transport plants as it light …. apart from this succulents would die immediately in cocopeat it takes couple of months before the signs of problems start and to be honest before the plants starts getting issue it’s probably reached to someone’s house by then and then after getting home maybe in few months the succulents starts to deteriorate

Where do you get aquarium sand.Is it not necessary to add fertiliser and charcoal pieces.

You will find aquarium sand online as well as in your local aquarium shop....I would suggest local shop will be much better ....fertiliser is not very important They will do just fine without it ( most of the succulent varieties are currently dormant so anyways we don’t need to add any fertiliser to them ) ....however my next video will be on fertiliser it will make things much clear .....charcoal is optional

@@anuradhakadambi6326 yes that will be best ...buy medium granular or slightly bigger don’t go for very large pebbles all the best 😊
