DIY succulent and cactus mix suitable for hot and humid climate. This is the recipe that I use to mix my succulent and cactus soil base on Malaysian weather. However, you need to adjust it according to the climate, types of pots, pot size and your watering habits in your environment. And I forgot 1 important component that you can add which is coarse river sand. You can add 10% corse river sand into your mix too.
**** mistake at 3:01 caption. It should be coco peat and not peat moss

Well-covered variables such as climate, pot material, pot size, plant type, plant to pot size ratio. Not many videos here on KZfaq from "reputable" people go into the level of details you have here. Very concise explanations, not long and drawn out. Great stuff!

I live in Atlanta, Georgia USA aka ‘Hot Lanta’ - I’ve been growing my own succulents for about 18 months and I’m struggling with some varieties due to our frequent rain and humid weather. We can also go through periods of drought depending on the time of the year and even ice. This video was so helpful and insightful. I learned quite a bit and I just want to say thank you for being so detailed and using visuals. You have a new subscriber and I’m going to apply your advice to quite a few new plants I had outside that had to be cut or dug up and brought inside due to a rare icy/snow event that swept through the southeast. I’ll take notes and see how they progress over the next few months. I’ll be watching more videos now because I want to see what else you’ve shared. Thanks again.

you can use neem oil mix with water for insecticide when you water your succulents (organic way) and for those pests seen on leaves and stem, I use diluted isopropyl alcohol (mix with water) to spray on them and they die instantly. As for the mix, we can actualy use peatmoss and coarse river sand (maybe add pumice / perlite into it) that will be great enough. BTW, I'm speaking base on hot and humid climate (I think Florida has that kind of climate too ? )

@@foliagecove355 I have 90% gritty mix like, coarse sand, lava rocks, burned rice hulls (not too much), and coco peat/peat moss(10%)., to save cost, use perlite alot. That's my full sun rain and shine succulents mix for the moment :)

@@foliagecove355 for insecticide, can pour diluted neem oil into the soil. And put starkle G onto the soil. For leaves, I use alcohol spray. (isopropyl alcohol +water. 1:2..

1. Pumice still does float. Not to the extent that perlite does, but pumice certainly floats. 2. Placing those clay balls on the bottom of the pot before adding the main medium is terrible for healthy root formation. It's a "solution" to a problem that wouldn't exist if one were to simply just use a correctly-sized pot for the plant in the first place. When you use them in order to get "better drainage", what you're doing is raising the water table. That's a sure way to ensure your plant doesn't grow good as good of a root system as it might otherwise. Use a shallower pot (it's always better to be under-potting than over-potting xerophytes like cacti and succulents anyway), use higher inorganics i.e. grit/granite in your mix, or just put a layer of newspaper if the pot's drainage holes are letting fresh potting mixture fall through -- all infinitely better than using those pointless clay balls.
