Strike the arc using the filler rod to bridge the gap. Strike it like a match or quickly and the tungsten never has to touch the base metal. It is what I did in the video but prob hard to see it.

Well this video is for someone who only has a stick welder and wants to convert to TIG. Avoid buying a machine setup for TIG and use what ya have. As for the rods you can run all the same rods with this setup as any DC TIG. Thanks for watching.

No because the machine will not be able to provide continuous high frequency in the background to stabilize the arc.

You reverse polarity with tig if that helps stick welding lead goes to negative ground goes to positive

Just make sure your TIG torch lead is connected to the negative terminal and you are good to go!!

Some people have added beefy diode bridge rectifier to the AC output, early DC output welders usually add a smoothing inductor because they were at the mains 50/60 Hz frequency. Buying a set of 200A diodes new will probably cost a lot, try find some surplus or second hand.

This machine is a transformer-rectifier but works just as good on an inverter.

Well if it’s a buzz box it’s only AC welding so it won’t work. Buzzbox is a transformer only machine. But if you can snag a transformer-rectifier machine you are good. Even if the amps are lower than you think. 150 amps can weld some pretty decent size metal. Great question and thanks for watching.

@@weldzcool1147 My bad, I call all the box type stick welders transformers a buzzbox ( well they buzz a lot when they are on) I was talking about for example the Lincoln AC/DC 225/135, or the Forney AC/DC 235/185, or Miller and Hobart AC/DC 235/165 or 300/200 ( they dont make these anymore though) These are all transformer stick welders just smaller than yours AKA tombstone type and they have AC/DC capabilities. One more question, what's the lowest amperage you can scratch start an ark with this sort of tig welding?

What do you mean it doesn’t work? I might be able to help if I understand. Do you not get an arc? Or do you get an arc and the welds are coming out wrong? Give me some more information and I’ll try to help.

With TIG typically the negative goes to the torch/tungsten and the positive to the work/table.

Being an AC only machine, no this would not work for that machine. Would have to have DC capabilities

@@henrysosa5813 if you run positive or also known as reverse polarity, the electrons will jump from your base metal to your tungsten electrode putting an incredible amount of heat in the tungsten. Although it’s the highest melting temperature of any metal, it can’t handle that heat and will melt the tungsten. When it’s negative or straight polarity, the electrons jump from tungsten to base metal. The tungsten gets hot and glows red but with the argon as a shield it won’t melt. In fact, it will stay sharp as long as you do not contaminate. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching :)

@@ravebrave8866 just need a power source with DC capability, power cable adaptor, hose for the gas hookup, and a air-cooled TIG torch with a valve to start and stop the gas flow. That’s it!
