Holding an aerodynamic position on a triathlon or time trial bike can be uncomfortable, but with the correct fit and components it doesn't have to be. Aero bars are a completely different fit and position than a normal road bike, but allow you ride faster and further. Mark shows you how to make your aero position comfortable.

Spending time setting up your position dialled will pay dividends in speed. Having the right saddle height and position is really important, and can be very different from your road bike. The general rule of thumb is that you should raise your saddle and move it slightly forwards. Dedicated time trial or triathlon saddles are available which offer better comfort in the different position. As ever with saddles though, saddle choice can be very personal. Ultimately use the saddle that works for you.
Mastering aero bars is one of the biggest improvements you can make, but they take time and patience to set up correctly. The great thing about aero bars is that they can be endlessly tweaked in the pursuit of speed. The poles and base-bar can be easily moved fore and aft, and the poles rotated to suit your particular position. Setting the width of the poles and pads is a trade off between comfort, control and speed. You will find that as you become more experienced at riding in the aero tuck you will be able to comfortably move your elbow pads closer together to become more aerodynamic. Additionally on aero bars it is important to not feel too stretched out as this will not only be an uncomfortable position but will also give you less control at speed.
Lastly lower tyre pressure will take some of the harshness out of the ride, and also add some grip in corners.
Don't forget though that to be really comfortable on your aero bike you have to spend time riding in the position and working on your core so that you can maintain the aero tuck. Maybe get a friend to video you riding in the position so you can look at it and make changes accordingly.
If you enjoyed this video, make sure to give it a thumbs up and share it with your friends. 👍

I'm setting up my new e-road bike w straight handlebars and aero bars and boxer bar ends for a little longer distance, i.e. 40 miles. This has helped me a lot to put my position into perspective.

Great video. There's a lot of useful info here. Personally, if I want to make my aero bike more comfortable, I put an extra seat pad on my recumbent.

Thanks for the tips, I'm new to riding a TT bike, god it's wobbly first using the aero bars but slowly gaining confidence, honing the position is helping with that. I feel I've got most things right then go out and my knees are occasionally hiting my elbows. PS, just watched a video of me on a turbo, my knees hit my tricep not my elbows and my ears are a couple of inches in front of my elbows, more little tweeks......thanks again for the tips.

I find the aero bars and esp pads a privilege to have, it's so comfy and relaxing, after paddling with base bars for some time jumping back to the aero bars is such a bliss.. Btw, do invest in those specific saddles, the best upgrade, ISM for instance. It feels awkward at the beginning, then you feel no pain or disruption when get used to.

I watched tons and tons of triathlon videos, just because I really wish if I can get a triathlon bike, unfortunately I can't because they don't exist in Morocco and I can't manage it price ... I love and I enjoy riding bikes, I do it daily, but I'm tired of my mountain bike which is so heavy, slow and I hate it now.

I been on TT bike for a few years now . For me the break in was on the elbows shoulders and the back of the neck which can get tired of looking up in the TT position when you first start however after a while the body adjusts and acclimates itself i never have discomfort now and can hold the position as long as I need it

Can you guys do a video on how to choose a size for a tt/triathlon bike? I read online that people typically size down when going from road to tt, but that could be old-school information. Love the vids!

There really isn't a 'how to size,' it's all about your body and your fit coordinates. Some bike work better sized down, some up. The IA, for instance, with its sail effect, is faster in larger sizes.

I'm buying a 2000 Trek Hilo in 56 cm, same frame size as my Lemond Buenos Aires road bike which feels great for me. I don't race triathlons or time trials, yet, but I'm buying this bike for $100 and will take her out on days when I want to ride as fast as I can in a straight line.

Bike fit first. Then buy the bike the fitter says you can fit on based on your pad stack and reach fit coordinates.

i have bars on my road bike and i prefer that. i'm not as low as a TT rider but i feel great! i can hold the position for long period. i even feel great in corners. i can actually lean quite a lot on bars.

WHat height do you set your elbow pads on that road bike? I think my road bike puts my non-adjustable pads much too low.

I can't find any KZfaq videos about the 2000-2002 Trek Hilo 650b triathlon/time trial bike. I'm buying a 2000 metal flake yellow Trek Hilo soon, from a friend, for $100, at his bike shop.

Please don't use 25mm tires if you don't have very wide rims. On a 19c rim, most 25c tires pump up to 27mm wide. You would need 28-30mm external width rims to integrate these tires aerodynamically Considering that most people are on 25mm wide rims at most, a 23mm tire is gonna be faster. You don't want to de-attach that precious airflow. Im using 98psi in the front and 102-104psi in the rear with conti gp4000 23mm tires. Never feels uncomfortable except on cery rough roads

Agreed. Hambini confirmed that 23 is generally faster aerdynamically. Like you said, Hambini said the rim needs to be very wide relative to tire, pretty much around what you said, for aero gains. Hambini is an aero engineer for WorldTour riders and military aircraft. That said, when there is rough surface, then more and softer tire gives more speed, but not many TTs are run on gravel and trails. Gravel races actually do permit aero bars, and that is why I use them in gravel.

Cool video! I was wondering. If you got a Disc wheel for the rear of a road bike would that have a big aero dynamic benefit? Or is it a waste of money.

Sam Cohen ... There was a video of the Zipp engineers themselves explaining how they discovered the "teroidal" effect of wider rims. In that video they said, in all their wind tunnel testing, that any rim deapth greater than 60mm is "a spinning waste of carbon", or words to that effect. That's why they stopped making the 1080

I made my time trial bike 100% more comfortable: I sold it. Now I just ride a road bike. You don’t need to put yourself through the misery that is TT bike riding. Better to be comfortable and enjoy your training and racing. You’ll get fitter and have a better average speed in the long run.
