This is a great tip - it's not really 'mastering' the low end, it's more a tip of how to get better definition of the low end. I tried this on about 6 of my tracks and it works when you rely on the kick for sub (like house) but not when you rely on the bass for sub (like DnB).

around the 130h+ if you use drum buss in ableton and increase the drive + the transient for the attack you will hear some tube distorting like resonances which you don't want most of the time! Be carefully in general with analog distortions, alot of them are tube like...

I know he is a legend, but using a dynamic EQ on there’s low frequency’s with the „adding“ mode (not subtracting with the EQ) creates like 0,5 Hz (with every kick pulse). In conclusion the DC filter of all amps will filter this out and it may sound weird… (try it yourself and use „Delta“ function on your DynEQ and listen to the addition that it is producing…)

@ATopeDePowerURL6 ай бұрын
Why does the 130Hz cut give more definition to the sub? Is It because it removes weight from the first harmonic of the Kick (if the fundamental freq is around 60-65Hz), so that the fundamental gets more weight?
@russellszabadosaka5-pindin8495 ай бұрын
That is exactly what I took away from that part of the video. So, yes...reduce that first harmonic a little bit. It does sound like a reasonable plan of action!

Gain stage and cut, don’t do additive EQ moves like this. Much better to cut out all the frequencies you don’t need and then boost the whole signal via gain staging than artificially inflating spots in your equalizer as seen here.

What if there’s already too much low end? What if a HPF phase shift sounds better than a low shelf? Common man. It’s all situational. You know this. Why are you giving cookie cutter “do this” advice. These moves ain’t improving anything at least 50% of the time.
@lusid_music_uk3 ай бұрын
@vongwynbleidd fair… but saying “this is how you can improve your low end” without saying “in this very specific particular situation”. A lot of people see stuff like this and think I saw *insert famous mastering engineer* make this move so now I should do it too. When they probably shouldn’t. So that’s my objection here really.
@MilleAnniBGD Жыл бұрын
In general it's ok, but not any significant difference and benefit in this particular example. It's already mixed ( mastered ) properly

Linear phase on low end low cut
@lusid_music_uk11 ай бұрын
@@gertytheman What will definitely happen is that the phase of the low frequency’s will change. What’s not certain is whether it will be perceived as a good thing, a bad thing, or a neutral thing. There is no reason not to use it. Although keeping phase relationships in tact when you can is generally a good idea. A low shelf does result in a more gentle phase shift.
