I recently changed one of my axles on my tandem trailer. The critical measurement as far as I am concerned is of the center to center measurement of the two springs of the trailer assuming that you have leaf springs on your trailer. There is a saddle located on each side of the "Axle" that you will be purchasing and these saddles will sit directly over the leaf springs. The 2 saddles are welded on the axle that you will be purchasing. The saddles are generally a 1-1/2" or so wide metal channel welded near each end of the axle by the hub that your wheels will attach to. At the center of the springs you should find round head bolts about 3/8" to 1/2" diameter. The round head bolts located on the two springs is where you want to take your measurement. So, take a measurement from center to center of the round head bolts on your springs. The holes located on the center bottom flat side of the 2 saddles of the axle that you will be purchasing should line up exactly with the round head bolts that are located on each of the leaf springs. When you install the axle, make sure that the drilled holes on the saddles fit directly over the round head bolts on the 2 leaf springs. Then, install the 2 U-Bolts that attach over each of the saddles (Total of 4 U-Bolts). Next, install your wheels and lug nuts. You are now finished. Congratulations!

im building a trailer bt i dont know how long to make the axle if the trailer is 1500mm wide ....so do i cut the steel for the axle the same width then weld on the hub kit etc or do i make the steel a bit wider??

My boat has been parked in my driveway on the trailer for years. Last time we used it, noticed the trailer bearing going bad and just got it back to its parking spot in time. Jacked the trailer up, removed the wheel, and went to get parts. As luck would have it, my neighbor had houseguests and the 17-year-old with a driver's permit (who enters boot camp in a few weeks) hit the cone on my hitch, knocking the trailer off the jack. He wasn't even backing up, he was going forward. OMG. And he's going to get a gun to use? Fortunately the boat is fine, the garage needs some moulding repaired, and Iuckily the tire we had taken off of the trailer was resting under the axle so when the trailer was pushed off the jack, it rested on the wheel. For 5 years, with the wheels on it, nobody ever hits it. The DAY we take the wheel off, it gets hit. Murphy's Law. Anyway, thanks for this video....will put it to use!!!
