How to Measure Cabinet Door Overlay for Face Frame Cabinetry

If you are converting your old exposed traditional hinges to hidden Euro style hinges or just looking to replace a broken hinge, you will need to know your face frame cabinet door overlay.
The cabinet door overlay is the space that your cabinet door covers the frame or panel of your cabinet, on the hinge side of the door. In this video I will explain how to easily get this measurement.

Here’s what you are going to need:
1. Masking/painter’s tape or a sticky note
2. A tape measure or a ruler
The first step is to close the cabinet door. With the cabinet door in the closed position locate the hinged side of the door.
Once you have located the hinged side of the door, place a piece of tape on the face of the cabinet and flush to the door in a vertical position.
Open the door so you can see the edge of the tape.
Now, measure the distance from the inside edge of the tape to the frame opening. (Normal door overlay is 1/4” to 1-1/2”)

If I want a 1 1/2” overlay, will that change the location of the bore on the cabinet door?

I have a 3/4 framed cabinet setup. I am replacing the 100 year old doors on them with Oak ply and my intent, because I already did it on my sliding drawers and two under sink doors, is to put a nice oak piece of trim around the edges of the face of the doors. Follow me ? So , I don't want an ugly piece of ply edging showing so my practice on the under sink doors was to inset the main ply door and exceed the face dimensions with that trim work by about a 1/4 inch and have the ply main body of the door, sit inside my frame with that trim acting like the stop. Anyhow, I have not made any more than the under sink doors and just used a stepped regular hinge to inlay them as described. These doors are no longer a concern, but I might be persuaded to replace those hinges too. Now about the other dozen doors. I have already bought all the trim work for these but not the ply yet. If I do go with an inset compact hinge, will not that overhanging trim , on the hinge side edge, collide with the cabinet frame when I open it ? I certainly don't want to see any sort of gap between the door and frame, hence my inclination to overhang that trim. Would you call this setup a partial overlay, since the 1/2 inch play door goes inside the frame, but that trim around the edge stays outside to hide any gap ? Keep in mind too that with 100 year old cabinets, the ruler and square apparently hadn't been invented yet so that overhanging trim is crucial to hiding imperfections. Can you please prescribe a hinge for this and don't be shy about suggesting any mod to my intended door design to make it all work. Cheers.

Hi Joe! You can certainly add a piece of trim as you are describing around the door and create the (step) and then you would want to use this hinge with that setup. www.woodworkerexpress.com/semi-concealed-3-8-inset-self-closing-face-frame-hinge-antique-brass-hickory-hardware-p143-ab.html The concealed or compact hinges will not work with the lip. Or you can also cut the new plywood doors with a normal overlay to cover the face frames and then use wood edge banding to cover the ply edges. - www.woodworkerexpress.com/13-16-Wide-Pre-Glued-Real-Wood-Edgebanding-Red-Oak.html I would recommend the edge banding route if you wanted to have concealed (hidden) hinges. How would you measure beveled edges? From the front edge which is the longest point, or from the back where it angles in? The doors have no hardware so the bevel is used but it was around the whole door inside of just the opening side.

How adjustable, if at all, are full overlay hinges? My kitchen cabinets are all 'custom' (previous homeowner built them). He did a pretty good job, but none of the cabinet openings/doors are identical, so I'm wondering just how precise I need to be in this measurement. Thanks!

Great question! Most full overlay hinges have up to 5mm adjustability so there is room for a little bit of slack here and there.

Can you get a full overlay over a face frame of 33.5mm? If yes, which hinge will do the job?
