Cabinet door hinges can be complicated. There are so many options and types that it can be over whelming. In this video, I will show you everything that you need to know when ordering compact hinges.

In this video, i will explain exactly what a compact hinge is and the different options and types that are available. Basically Everything that you need to know before ordering Compact Hinges for your Cabinetry

Now there are so many options available when it comes to cabinet door hinges and today we will be discussing the compact style hinge.
Here are some of the topics that we will be learning about in this video:
the Opening angle degree, Self close vs soft close , Screw on vs dowel, Wrap around vs side mount, and the overlay.
The opening angle degree is the maximum angle that the cabinet door will open.
For compact hinges, this angle can be anywhere from 105 degree to 110 degree.
For the compact hinges, you will have 2 options for the type of door closing. Either self closing, which is the standard snap closing type hinge or soft close, which is the nice and quiet,elegant close. Ah, so nice!
Next you have the option of either screw on or dowel. For the screw on style, you will need #6 x5/8" screws to attach the hinge to the door. For the dowel style, you will need a ram insertion machine to press the hinge into the door, similar to this machine.
A wrap around hinge is designed exclusively for face frames that are 3/4 " thick. The hinge is designed to wrap around the face frame as you see here. The side mount style hinge is designed to work with face frames of any thickness from 3/4" and beyond.
And finally the overlay. This is the measurement that the door will overlay the face frame. Compact Cabinet door hinge overlays vary from as little as 1/4" to as much as 1 7/16" depending on your cabinetry.

Question about what hinges to buy: We added shaker style trim to all our flat kitchen cabinets (50 years old with face frames and old fashioned hinges). Now that the cabinet fronts are deeper (due to the trim depth), the cabinet doors at the corners of the kitchen hit each other when opened so that each door can only open about 60 or 70 degrees. Is there a hinge type that would allow the door to move inwards a tiny bit when opening so that it won't hit the adjacent door?

Hello, I have frameless cabinets. The doors have no overlay, but have 5/8" lip that rests on the cabinet. I'm having a tough time finding the right soft close hinge.

The door of my medicine cabinet is flush on all sides with cabinet frame (1 5/16” thick). There is a full mirror on the door (5/8” total thickness). It uses Blum compact hinges (30.310 - 11.02 which is the same as compact 33). The mounting plate shows 1 ¼”. Problem: the bottom of the door rubs against the cabinet frame when opening and one of the hinges broke. Can you recommend a replacement hinge that would allow me to adjust depth? Also, it seems to me that the overlay should be 1 5/16" instead of 1 1/4”.

looking on WE ,still cant quite figure out soft close hinges for a face frame (1.5" wide ) cabinet with inset doors, might have to screw to the back of the face frame (aprox 3/4" back spacing to side wall) as the cabinet is one piece and will have 3 doors ,the center opening doesn't have a "side" to attach to, like the ends will. what would work that's in stock, for me to use as a mock up prior to building all the cabinets, Thanks

Really great, & through vids!! Thanks for that. - I have a apparently nearly unsolvable project; I want to put front doors on out fireplace "cabinet(s) (both sides, beside of the fireplace.) I want the wood doors covered w/ledger stone, on the "front, as well as well as on the sides of the "cabinet. I want the front/door hinge to swing open to allow storage inside for electronics, but the hinge must go inside (because of the stone outside), and allow enough clearance for the wooden.door thickness, as well as the ledger stone. I think my best bet so far is to use Offset Hinges to allow the swing/clearance past the bind created by the corners. Pretty hard to describe, but any thoughts? Thanks, Bob W.

Hi there, thanks for the great videos!! I’ve a question. I installed 1 1/4 overlay hinges to my kitchen cabinets. My issue is around 1/2 inch gap on the hinge side door when the door is closed. Do you have any idea how to get it fixed? Thank you!

Question: what is the difference or pros/cons between the Blum compact and the clip-top? I don't quite understand when to use which. Thanks!

They are both great hinges. In general, The compact hinge is designed to be used for faceframe cabinets and the cliptop are for euro frameless cabinets. Unless you have an inset door, then you would use the cliptop for both frameless and faceframe cabinets.

Also, the maximum overlay for the compact hinge is around 1 9/16 and for the cliptop hinge the max overlay is 3/4. Hopefully that helps!

I have the Blum face frame inset hinges, when cutting the width of the cabinet door, I usually take the cabinet opening minus 1/8 on each side. So I have 1/8 gap. Do I need to cut less, I don’t want the cabinet door to come out to narrow if I precut everything first, Not sure of the formula if there is one, thanks

I generally take off 3/16 from the opening for the width and the ht. That usually leaves a nice tight reveal

I want to install soft-close concealed hinges on a cabinet with doors milled to ½" at the edge. It is a single vanity cabinet, 180 degree opening, face frame style with ⅝" overlay. Is there an option that allows the hinge cup to be drilled further in to the door body? At 1 " into the milled edge, there is enough thickness to drill safely. Is there a way to extend the inside edge of the face frame to shift the cup? I am 'working above my pay grade' so I am flummoxed by all the choices except what I am looking for. Tkx for any input.

There are a few different choices here. How do you calculate Double door sizes with the correct middle reveal, using Blum Compact hinges on a faceframe with 3/4 in Overlay ?

You would deduct 1/8" generally. Let's say the opening is 24" wide, add the 3/4" overlay for both sides of the opening, then subtract 1/8". The doors should be each 12 11/16 wide

Thanks for these videos, but I have a situation that no video seems to answer. I made some 7/8 inch face frames because that was the wood I had. I subsequently made 3/4 inch doors to INSET into these frames! No wall, just the frames. Any advice on what concealed hinges and methods will work for that situation?

We just bought a house and the kitchen cabinets, with face frame, have many different sizes of European hinges. How do you measure in this case? Different brands and sizes of hinges. Some have shims, so we have no idea how to measure. Some are measuring 1 1/4", 1 1/8" and 1". What do we do??

How to adjust how tight the door closes?

Question - I'm working on a frameless install. Looking at the hinge part that attaches to the cabinet ... the part that is directly connect to cabinet has 4 very small prongs about a 1/8 to 1/4 inch in height. Is the purpose of these prongs to lift up that hinge up so that it has the needed space for adjustments. If so, then do these prongs need to be assured being seated on the cabinet when tightening the hinge down. thanks

What is the difference between 3/4 and 1/2 over lay? I have side mount.

3/4 is the overlay (the amount that the door hangs over the face frame of the cabinet when the door is closed. So the difference between 3/4 and 5/8 would be an 1/8 of an inch that the door is hanging over when closed

I have a house built in the 50's; it has Inset/Overlay doors with a 3/8 (9.5mm) inset. They have a face frame with door and frame thickness of 3/4" (19mm). I am having difficulty figuring out the best solution for concealed hinges that will work with my application. Do you have any information that can help?

@@MichaelTran11814 I ended up going with blocking. I cut a piece of wood to come out flush with the face frame I screwed that to my cabinet. Being my cabinets were built on site when the house was built, each block had to be custom sized to fit each hinge mounting plate. I used Blum 71B7550 155 degree hinges with a Blum 175H9190 mounting plate and I bought some Blum 181.6130 spacers just in case. I tried multiple trial runs on a "test door" to achieve the proper set back to drill the holes in the doors for the cups on the hinges. It works well, but it's not as straight forward as I would have liked. As they say, I'm only responsible for my work, your results may vary.

Although it sounds like you came up with your own solution I think the set-up you have is called rabbeted hinges. They have the 3/8 overlay you talk about and were common in older houses. I know Salice makes hinges for that design. Not sure about Blum.

Hi, my face frame is 1.5 inches and I want full overlay. Is there a hinge that works? I have 1.5 inch overlay compact hinges but the doors bind to each other. The doors were made so there's 1/8 space between doors, I am considering notching the frame to use full overlay hinges that won't bind since doors will cover frame anyways.

Great info but totally useless for what I was looking for. I wanted to know if compact cabinet hinges like the ones he's showing have a quick release mechanism? I already know they don't, the easiest way to remove the cabinet door is to take off what he calls the "middle screw". It's the one that connects the door portion of the hinge to the cabinet portion. I needed to do that because our bathroom sink cabinet door hinge tore off at the bottom spot. The screws worked loose and no longer bit into the cheap "wood" surface. So I took off the other end via that middle screw and replaced the 2 small (#6) screws with 2 slightly wider (#8) ones, that still fit through the holes in the metal hinge plate. Those wider screws bit into the "wood" and now the hinge in once again snug, problem solved

Is it common to have multiple overlays in your kitchen? I've measured all of my cabinets and I have overlays of 1/2", 3/8", 1/4", and 3/4".

You thought you were done? What about "clearance", zero, vs. 6mm vs 4.5mm,.? Many people are going to watch this hoping you will actually include "most of everything",.including clearance.
