I usually like to use a long piece of fuel hose when mocking up a cable, it makes similar contours to a cable. String just flops all over the place...

The hose that is used for washer fluid is similar in size to the cables and really does work great for this.

Definitely! I use some small vacuum line typically when there are no cables to measure
