The vast majority of domestic garden hoses used in America are 5/8" hoses. They come in light duty, medium duty, and heavy duty versions which basically causes the outside diameter of the hose to change from roughly .77" on the low end to around 1.0" on the high end.
In this video I show you how I measure the diameter of my hoses including the bigger 3/4" hoses which will always have an outside diameter greater than 1-inch.

► I use a pair of digital calipers to measure my hose diameter but there are other ways to do this too. Calipers are handy to have around the garage though and they don't cost much so make sure to price them out anyway. In most cases where you want to repair or trim a garden hose to size it's helpful to know the exact size of your garden hose because the repair kits are designed for specific hose sizes. You can get universal fit hose connectors but usually they don't work as well.
