I think even with extended tips the exducer size is generally just the OD of the base circle on the compressor wheel. The extended tip dimensions should be measured or listed separately in addition to the base exducer diameter. Don't quote me and I'm sure it may vary by manufacturer, but if this wasn't the standard it would be very difficult to measure for replacement or upgrade wheels and comparing the sizes of turbos would also be far more complicated. Extended tips are basically there to make a wheel act like a slightly larger wheel with very few downsides, but the extended tip length and angle for a given diameter wheel can vary as well.

Great video thanks for breaking down the math. I learned alot.

It's turbo science. Did you know that gigantic turbochargers(turboprop actually) were used on the F1 engines that that launched the Saturn V for the Apollo mission? So I guess you could say it is rocket science

Well then. I didn’t know that. I guess then maybe it is lol

Yeah, but what about measuring one that’s on a truck-installed. How do you measure it? My caliphers aren’t long enough to reach through and even if they were wouldn’t the wheel be larger than the opening on the intake side?

You can you a inside calipers. Just buy a cheap one and then measure with tape measure will get you close

@@CUTTERUPROB I figured out the best thing to do…take the cover off the turbo. This way you can see inducer and exducer dimension on the compressor. Just found out I have a 63/88 inducer on hX35 exhaust turbine and housing. It’s a 7 blade and I used your method for determining the diameter of the wheel. I’d love to trade my turbo for a 60 mm.

@@CUTTERUPROB even my inside calipers wouldn’t reach…the real answer is take the cover off if it’s on the truck.

@@CUTTERUPROB those would work, don’t have any like that…by the way with my turbo…63/67/12 cm, what combo would you match with it for optimal power….or is this just too big of a turbo for a tow pig?

Was hoping you would show how to measure the exducer of an odd blade wheel with extended tips. Lol. You could save a step with your math and not divide the hub diameter by 2... 2 x blade length Inc hub diameter Minus hub diameter would work out the same.

I believe the exducer size is just the size of the base circle. Even if there are extended tips, that should be the listed measurement. The extended tip length or overall blade diameter should be listed separately. I can't guarantee this is the case with all manufacturers, but I believe this is how Borg Warner and others do it. Often the exact extended tip dimensions aren't listed at all, but only the exducer base circle OD is given.
