To ensure a clean drum: Add half the water Add half the ballast Add all the cement Add 1/4 the water(pour in slowly running down the drum) Add half the ballast. Add the rest of the water to get required consistency. Always ensure the cement is wet or it sticks to the drum.

The most efficient way to work with cement products, is to keep a large 'dumpy bag' of homemade aggregate in your garage. Aggregate is the bulk mass of any concrete or mortar. It's always a smart idea to keep all aggregates and dry additives (not the cement though) mixed into one uniform product, and then keep it in the dumpy bag. Ingredients for any home-prepared aggregate includes : - Sand - Gravel (for concrete) - Clay - Fly Ash - Fibers (chopped straw, fiberglass threads, or any other stringy material) Rule of thumb; keep the level of sand higher than the other ingredients. Another good thing to keep in 5 gallon buckets, is your own homemade liquid ingredient. This can be prepared by first filling the bucket with water, and then adding things like dish soap/plasticizer, calcium oxide, and a few teaspoons of any of those 'ice removal' products. Now, to answer you question; The proper ratio for Mortar mixing is like Mark said, a 4 to 1 mix... but if you're in a very dry part of the world or if you are simply building indoors, then you should go with a 5 to 1 mix. But make sure that your sand aggregate has a little clay in it. If it doesn't, then you can dig some from your backyard subsoil, and then sift out the powder clay. The amount of water needed is almost always personal preference, but most pros will tell you to work with as little as you can. You know you are working with too little water when your mix is crummy and like wet sand. You know you are working with too much water when the water is splattering out of the mix and flowing like pancake batter. Good luck! Cheers

The instructions with my mixer said, throw in a bucket full of pebbles or similar plus a bucket or two of water and run for a few minutes (using common sense), once satisfied empty pebbles and retain until the next time you need them. The pebbles and water will knock off any of the cement/concrete mix leaving mixer clean and ready to use again.

I'm novice at this, and someone else said to turn the machine on first before loading it. I didn't believe it because I consider it dangerous to put bucket/shovel loads while it's spinning; I might dissappear in there. But, looking at this, it seems to be the way it's done. Thanks for the video. Jake, Australia.

This video is good. Also adding water first will not work, when the mixer is cheap and leaks. No need to add water first. It will be dusty anyway, as 1/2 or even 9/10 of the water is simply not enough to catch all the dust parts. Also, concrete is not a rocket science, it's alchemy. 1 cement 4 sand & ballast is a good ratio. I guess it would be B25 without any problem, maybe B30 or more.. Many vids are telling us 1:5 or even 1:7 is enough. Sure is, but as amateur can spoil the quality, adding more is simply foolproof strategy. Sorry for bad English, but it also matters, what ballast or sand you put in, eg: 0-32mm fraction. The video is called how to mix concrete. Did he mixed concrete? YES! The author is not fool, by bucketing he is making sure that the ratio is OK (liter is not kilogram, or quart is not pounds in this business, mass is different). If he would do it by shovel, the ratio could go off by much. And that is a big mistake. Wearing mask? Well, it depends, how much are you mixing, and your own preferences. It won't kill you. Eating unhealthy foods on a regular basis will kill you way faster. Also, regarding water first, if you have some steel fiber in the concrete, you must mix it with dry compounds, not wet. But it differs by brand. Anyway, its ALCHEMY, not a rocket science.

you ar incorrect - the screen comment did not specify the quantity (how much) ballast he actually added". also at 1:58 he refers to a "mortar or concrete mix". as you probably know mortar is generally a 4:1 or so mix & concrete 3:2:1. no doubt the guy knows his stuff but as a rudimentary guide the video was very confusing - hence the negative comments.
@wotviewer
@wotviewer 7 жыл бұрын
as stated several times he is using all in ballast. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the UK way of doing things? Ballast is a a pre mixed batch of sharp sand and aggregate stone in the ratio 1:2. Therefore a concrete suitable for driveways would normally be 1 cement to 6 ballast which translates to 1 cement 2 sand, 4 aggregate i would however agree with your comment about the quality of the video - given he is supposed to be a technical college tutor it is awful. No one loads a mixer by bucket in the real world, if for no other reason than look at the lifting he has to do that way (health and safety!)

and how strong, you can make the ratio whatever you want. often for a strong skim patch I mix one cement to one sand and a little mortar clay or lime if that is what you have. you can weaken the mix from there on depending on the application and the thickness. you decide..
