How to Mix PanPastels | Red Iron Oxide 2019
In this pastel demonstration I show you how to use PanPastels on Pastelmat with my brush technique, which is how I work these days.
I use masking film to prevent halos around my subjects and show you how I mix colours if I don’t have the hue or colour I’m looking for.
In this study I use Black, Red Iron Oxide X Dark, Red Iron Oxide Shade, Red Iron Oxide, Red Iron Oxide Tint and Titanium White. I show you how I make a gradient with just these colours from the lightest to the darkest.
The art supplies I use are listed below:
Pan Pastels
Pastelmat by Clairefontaine
Glassine Paper to protect work while I was painting
Gum eraser & Kneaded eraser
Synthetic makeup brush for applying, blending and adding details.
Mask IT masking film by X-Press IT
Exacto knife

Thanks for this. I'm an oil painter, but one of my instructors got me a terrific deal on a full palette of pan pastels a number of years ago. I have had the best intentions of using these valuable creative materials, but have neglected them, because I didn't have access to useful information like this. Subscribed!

Hi BJones, first of all, thank you for watching, your subscription, and your comment. I'm an oil painter first, and the way I paint with PanPastels was not a difficult transition. In fact, I can go back and forth without my head spinning changing mediums. If you get a chance, view my videos, and I have a tonne of free tips and tricks. My Livestreams are art chats, and you might get frustrated.

What a great demo showing how blendable pan pastels are. I just love how solid and opaque every swatch is. They really do give amazing coverage.

Hey there Margaret, so glad you're feeling inspired. No you haven't wasted your money. Just keep on playing and practicing to see what you can get out of the medium. The best part about PanPastels is that you can mix to make more colours (just like wet paint, only it's dry). Feel free to contact me if you get stuck. Happy to help. Happy Painting.

I agree; one of my painting instructors does pan pastel demos. But If you don't know enough about how the materials are used to their best effect, it's hard to create anything decent.

I started mixing. I love it. I have a limited number of pans so it makes working things out very convenient.

I’m watching this one again, I got the brush, I’ll be giving it a go. I find the brush set I got similar to yours that the brushes don’t seem firm enough. I’ll keep trying, I think I’m just going to fast.

Xrissart...Are you also using pastel mat as your 'palette ' when mixing colours, or is that just a normal piece of cardstock? Thankyou for your videos by the way...I've invested in roughly 40 pans so far...I bought them originally to use for backgrounds in my colouring books. I didn't have much success with them the first few times and they sat for months, with me thinking I had wasted another heap of money on something else that I wouldn't end up using. However since I have started watching your videos I have brought them out to play more often and am becoming a little more confident with them. Now if only I could develop an artistic streak to use them for my own art instead of just colouring other people's work lol.

G'Day there Alison, thank you for your question and comment. I use cardstock or something similar to mix my colours. You are very lucky to have all those Pans, and believe me when I tell you I paint more than just backgrounds with PanPastels. I invite you to view a some of my videos where I use 80%- 90% PanPastels and Pastel Pencils for details (you may pick up some tips and tricks). I think you should just play with them and paint small subjects until you get the hang of it. I recommend using Pastelmat for a surface (even for practice), the experience will be so much better. Artistic steak you say? I'm sure there's one buried in there somewhere:)

Have you found any paper other than the pastelmat that allows for the mixing of color so thoroughly? I’m a beginner and still trying to limit my color palette (and money I spend) before investing more :). Thanks for the video!

Hi Emily, thank you for your question, you can mix panpastels on almost any surface. Just experiment with what you have for the time being. Maybe try colourfix (not my favourite paper for pastels, but great fro coloured pencils) this paper is affordable, however if you can try purchasing one large sheet of Pastelmat and cut it into pieces, that would be my recommendation. Thank you for watching.

@@Xrissart I was looking for less expensive paper for learning too, and was told that watercolor paper works (heavier is best (?) I also purchased a type of liquid base coat for pastels, which is like a gesso with "tooth", but am lacking experience to know if my marks are "right."
