How to model a waterfall
After last week's weirs, waterfalls are nature's alternative. You can use similar techniques to the weirs but waterfalls are generally less structured so the water is more scattered.
Tools and Materials
All of these materials are commonly available in either a DIY store or art shop. Online shops will also carry them. The Amazon links are all items I have either bought or bought something similar for myself. Clicking on any links to Amazon will give me a small affiliate income which I use to produce more videos. Every little helps!
Waterfall base materials - I used garden stones but you can use plaster rocks instead
Acrylic paints - for the base and water. I used Tamiya brown (XF-72 amzn.to/2NixuHf) and olive green (XF-58 amzn.to/2MOlXCI) and Vallejo white (amzn.to/2Nop2qg)
Dark India Ink (amzn.to/2wt9fii) in Isopropyl Alcohol wash - 3 teaspoons of ink to 1 pint of alcohol (amzn.to/2BJh6OR)
Cling film (amzn.to/2wqM2xs)
Masking Tape (amzn.to/2MTMUVs)
Silicone adhesive (amzn.to/2Lrg35C) or silicon sealant (amzn.to/2o8D0RM) - preferably transparent but translucent will do
Cocktail sticks (amzn.to/2Lts0Yp)
Epoxy resin
Mixing cup and stirrer
Acrylic Gloss Medium (amzn.to/2MU9VYk)
Cotton Wool (amzn.to/2wpvt4P)
Thanks to Paul at EDM Models for the Magic Water.

It's so useful to see someone break down all of this. I love water and want to do water but I do a lot of commissions. I don't get to just try random stuff and this is helping a ton. I'm doing an entire army right now and I think it will have a bunch of water on it. :)

Jordon West Glad I can help. I think water puts people off as it can be so final and they are scared of making a mistake. It always looks awesome when it's done though. I'd love to see some photos when you are done.

Loved the video, the delivery was informative and concise.....however we would've appreciated some closer-up camera work so we could make out some of the details and understand the techniques used a lot better.

That’s a hard one and not something I e done. I’d probably use a short dead grass coloured static grass and put it on quite thinly.

Great Video Kathy. Very educational and full of new ideas. Have you ever tried using non stick cooking matts? They work really well and there is no need for the plastic wrap. One less step to worry about and you can easily peel back the work from the matt. For the thicker areas, I just apply the silicone directly to the piece then use a small oil or clay pallet to work it into the areas I need covered. Very nice job.

Kathy Great video - thanks, so much! I notice that you did not try to strip/peel the silicone from the "cling film" but rather trimmed around the silicone waterfall(s) and applied them to the mountain. I'm experimenting doing the same but using waxed paper (a U.S. term). However, I just tried peeling off the silicone shapes after drying for several days, but to no avail. the wax paper is not releasing from the silicone. This makes the waterfall seem cloudy rather than clear throughout. Any advice? I'm willing to try a do-over but just am puzzled as to what went wrong. Thanks & Blessings
@KathyMillatt
@KathyMillatt 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, that's why I use cling film, because it's clear and you don't need to peel off it. We use silicon sealant all the time to seal the edges of shiny tiles and plastic showers so I guess it's made to stick to even non-stick surfaces. I just don't fight that. I suspect it may be quicker to start again than get your waxed paper off. All I can think of is loads of water and rubbing until the paper element strips off.

What should i use epoxy or silicone to make realistic water for a project
@KathyMillatt

I use both but it depends on the project. Epoxy works best for bodies of water and silicone for moving water.

Ah, after this I watched your video about River and stream beds and that showed basically what I ment. Nice rounded stones more or less in their own color. Doesn't matter much tho, its all in the artists perception and creativiness and your a true model artist. Keep it going, thanks for your vids.

Hey, if you put some PVA glue around the edges of your tape dam, it will seal it completely and you won't have to worry about any resin leakage.

Great Video! ISO plastic cling wrap you could use baking paper for your silicon?
@KathyMillatt

Cling film is clear and I don’t peel the waterfall off. I haven’t tried baking paper but if the silicon doesn’t come away easily, you’ll be left with coloured bits in your water.

Oh my ,I`m going back 3 years,but soooooo much to see and learn from you.First off ,as the lady below mentioned, it is quite nice to see a woman doing these types of tutorial videos....a real breath of fresh air (and I like the English accent) Now then I plan on doing a bit of water effects on my expanded layout (most likely using Envirotex Lite ,readily available at my craft store and 50% off coupons make it a good choice) and was wondering if you were using Tamiya acrylic paint to tint your water product and if I could use Tamiya to tint Envirotex Lite ? Thankyou and please keep making these fine videos!! Oh oh ,I was watching another of your vids (Dec.2015) about your troubles with Envirotex Lite ,the browning and the bubbles etc.Do you figure it was the way you mixed the product that may have caused these troubles ?Thanyou.

Paul. I’ve used Floquil enamejs and Vallejo acrylics in my resin and both were fine. There’s not a lot of paint needed, just a few drops.

Mixing definitely made one area off colour and it didn’t set properly either there. Nothing a coat of acrylic gloss medium couldn’t fix.
