How to Model a River Bed
This episode looks at how to model a river bed. When you are modelling an upland or small river in the countryside, it's normally clear and easy to see the rocks beneath the water. In these cases, it is necessary to fully detail the river or stream bed. This is easy enough to achieve using commonly available materials.
I've included some prototype photos to give you some inspiration. In all of them you can clearly see the rocks and pebbles at the bottom of the river, even if the water isn't entirely clear. In most cases the rocks are quite light but they can be any colour to match your existing scenery.
Tools and Materials
All of these materials are commonly available in either a DIY store or art shop. Online shops will also carry them. Extremely well done, informative video presentation. Beautiful modeling. I have made a few stream beds of my own on my train layout. It never occurred to me to paint all the rocks of dissimilar initial colors to get them all within the same tone, as you have done here. I always thought I had to select rocks of all the same approximate colors for a given scene to look realistic. This simple technique really frees things up in my pea brain! Thank you so much for sharing, Kathy. This is inspirational work.

You know, if you want a slightly less fast flowing river or stream, you can take some fine green flocks and work it in behind the larger rocks and places it blocks the flow for algae...

Very cool I'm working on a stream diorama for my merkava 1 tank build it has a stream and a Mountain and a low hill on the other side wear the tank will set up and be firing across the stream into the mountains were a few isis are setup.

Hi Kathy, did you seal the base of the river before the build so that you wouldn't get any leaks? I'll be using woodland scenics murky water on regular plaster.

I find the paint seals my base enough as long as you have good dams. If your plaster is even with no holes then you should be ok. If you have foam or plastic in there, remember, murky water gets quite hot as it goes off.

Either base is fine, foam or plaster. If you already have plaster then stick with that.

Nice video! I'm planning on doing a diorama with a cut away water effect and will need to do a barrier as you did here. Did you notice any leaking from the Magic Water?

+LizardLandscapes All resin will leak if you let it. It's the consistency of water so if you think water can get out, then resin will too. I have had some major resin leaks in my life so I over dam now if anything.

Ok, just wondering how to get that clean look to a water cut away. I guess hard plastic? And is there a sweet spot as far as time goes for when you remove the barrier? Do you wait just enough to let the Magic Water set before removing the barrier, -meaning too long and the resin will have stuck to the sides of the barrier?

+LizardLandscapes Hi, you will need rigid plastic to get a smooth side. As to how long, I think it will either stick or not so I would let it set before peeling. It always stays slightly rubbery and if you take it away too early then it can slump a little. I think experimentation is key and how rigid your sides need to be will depend on the depth of pour. Deep pours will need reinforcement.

Wonderful river bed - do you think that any air bubbles could get trapped in the little spaces between or under rocks?How was the envirotex for bubbles this time around?Great work Kathy !V

I used Magic Water for this pour do didn't have a problem. When I've used Envirotex Lite in the past then it's not been a problem either. It does seem to creep into all the gaps and the bubbles normally rise to the surface. Kathy

Hi Kathy, really like your videos, very informative and helpful. Question re the dilute pva you spray. I have been finding it hard to get it to mist properly out of the spray bottle, it comes out in more of a narrow jet than a fine mist. I figure its because its too thick ie not enough water but if I add too much water it will lose its adhesiveness? What ratio do you use? Any tips? Also, what colour did you end up painting the talus?

Hi, I mist dilute IPA isopropyl alcohol and water but drip diluted PVA from a bottle for that reason. I find mist bottles just clog up.

I dilute both about 30:70 to water.

The colour was a mix of several acrylic paints, raw umber being the main colour but it's a bit dark on its own so I added a little bit of burnt umber, yellow ochre and natural.

Great video, thanks! Do you have any advice on how to model frozen stream/river. Just pour in a water solution (like Vallejo Still Water) mixed with a tiny bit of white?

Thanks for a quick reply. I'll stay tuned for the video. Other idea I though was to just use clear water solution and the drybrush just a tiny amount of white and then use gloss varnish or another layer of water solution. How do you think that would work? Just that my scale is 15mm so there won't be that much ice or water anyway.

That's quite a large scale so I think you will need to experiment to see what looks best. I've not done an icy river with much water in but I have done icy ground. I use icy sparkles by Deluxe Materials for that and they add a great ice effect. Perhaps play around with a few heaps of them on the water?

I find 15mm scale very tiny compared to 1/72 or larger scales. 15mm figures are somewhere close to 1/100. But yeah propably best to just experiment. Thank you anyway :)

Does the white glue not make the fake water cloudy? I am referring more towards woodland scenics realistic water since I have heard horror stories about that.

Not if it’s dry when you put resin on. Resin doesn’t rewet the glue to make it go cloudy although I imagine there are other water products out there that might.

How long does it usually take for that amount of resin to dry?

It depends on the brand and the temperature. Resin cures through a chemical reaction which is quicker when it’s warmer. Some resins I’ve used are about 18 hours, some are more than a day. You can get quick setting ones but they put out more heat which can melt surrounding scenery!
