Let's talk dust collection! If you are trying to modify your one stage Harbor Freight dust collector into a two stage, then I hope this will help you out. I used a trash can and made a Thien Baffle.

I have been into wood working for over 45 years now on and off. My wife and I shared our semi tractors for 35 years as over the road long haul drivers. Now that we have been retired 10 years now I was able to get back into wood working full time. I have always known females can do any thing a male can do and many times they can do them better. You remind me so much of my wife in our younger days. I can see you are good at what you do and this being my first time viewing your channel I can not wait to see more. Every sense I lost my wife 13 months ago I lost interest in working with wood or any thing else. Plus now that I am losing my fine vision I will be donating all of my equipment to a College in my area. My wife and I were blessed to be together for 52 years and I can not wait to see her again. But until than I will watch you and your video's until I can. Your video was not to long in my opinion after all wood workers can not watch or learn enough in regards to ours hobbies wether in the past or present. Your a natural & keep up the good work - I am going to watch some more of your videos now. Thank You so much - I am sorry for such a long reply Cheers

Nice re-use of part of the original dust collector! Venting outside is not an option where I live. In the winter, this would get the shop freezing cold in no time!

Matthias Wandel This the problem I have, I really want to vent outside but realistically I can only do that for about 6-7months of the year, otherwise I am just to be wasting my winter heating. It's not as cold here in the UK as Canada of course, but cold enough that I need heat in the winter to be able to work.

Love the video April. The only thing different I would do is to add blocks to the can and to the baffle so that the retaining clips stay parallel. That way you should need the wing nut to keep them tight. Awesome build. Laughed at the end when you were trying to explain that it was not a garbage can, my kids do that to me all the time.

+April Wilkerson I agree with willum321! You are influencing both young men and young women. I've been an avid woodworker for many years, and its very refreshing to see a young lady woodworking and enjoying it. For years women where told that's manland and that working with tools and power tools are not for young ladies. I think its crap! As my wife would say, You Rock! Keep up the good work!!

I was one of the first people to do this way back when Phil first developed his baffle. I published it on his site and got a few messages asking. I'm so glad that April videoed it, It works killer and is a great way to have a cheap, high volume dust collector

Great video: clear description, lots of great ideas on saving money on a really necessary shop tool. Had I done this a decade ago I probably would not have come down with emphysema. Effective dust collection is VERY important. Venting the fine dust outside is a great way to avoid hassling with the big filter bags -- as long as you don't have neighbors near by. That fine dust travels on the breezes and can coat everything with a fine powder. I live out on a mountain side, lot a problem for me!

I am a 63 year old retired carpenter. My old Dad would get a real kick out this. Sometimes at breaks, he commented that women would make good finish carpenters: "More patience then most men" , he'd say. I agree, and would just say to you young lady, keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your skill and knowledge.

I love your inspiration to do this. I have been holding on to a dual motor in-home vac system with the canister for a year now (I picked it up for $40.00). I've been thinking about making something like this but wasn't quite sure how I was going to go about it though until I watched your video and read several of the comments, like adding water to the collector barrel. I'm starting to get some Ideas flowing now. What I love about the overall idea is that this system doesn't just have to be for saw dust or dust. I reload, cut metal, weld and grind, do auto body and paint, and work on wood projects in my shop, all of that can be collected and filter through a water based system. I have three daughters so as a dad of all girls, I'm sure yours is very proud, at least I would be. I just hit that subscribe button.

Really enjoyed this video. I like the longer length, it felt like you had enough time to show all the steps with out hurrying. I also really liked seeing your creative processes with using all the parts of the dust collector in ways other than intended. Very cool.

Thanks for doing this. I just picked up the HF Dust collector today. It was on sale this week for 169 and I had a 25% off coupon. I got it all setup in the original configuration, but I'm going to need to modify it soon I'm planning on doing something similar to what you did. Great video. Looks like you need to flatten your airstream on the intake. That big opening is creating a lot of turbulence which is destabilizing the vortex. That's mostly why you had that cloud of sawdust shooting out the exhaust. Putting a curved baffle inside that will turn the round intake airflow into a taller narrow wedge of air that comes in right against the wall will really increase the separation.

+Merlin Magnus So true. I've been researching this method and I believe another improvement would be to thin the edge of the Thien Baffle where the cyclone hits it. This would cause less turbulence in the cyclone, improve air speed, and make it much easier for dust to fall down into the collector and not get sucked up into the exhaust. This is a really good upgrade even without those additions though and I really enjoyed the video, April.

I aam brazilian, working in the production of miniature trucks and always look for alternatives in tools made of artisan way. Congratulations, you are very smart! Almost 6 years ago! April, your videos were quite good back then, but with the recent stuff, new house, 2 new shops, and Home Improvement #2, I'm very impressed! (I work at a store that sells the stuff you use, and seeing that SawStop impressed me. Put 2 of them together, last week. 52 inch rails, 3HP single phase, no mobile base. Takes about 4 hours each, and i do NOT hurry!) Both going to the same place, a senior citizen mobile home park wood shop. steve

Great video and I hope it inspires more women to try their hand. I bought my wife a large toolbox and a bunch of tools a couple of years ago to keep her out of mine. Best money I ever spent. I've enjoyed watching her tackle all kinds of projects. I did, however, draw the line when she asked for a chainsaw. I appreciate the tenacity and the willingness to give it a go but she just doesn't have the upper body strength to deal with everything that can go wrong. But, against my better judgement I got out one of my small saws and let her give it a whirl. I didn't breath for a couple of minutes but she finally handed it back and told me she was biting off more than she could chew. She had to see for herself but that's ok. Everybody, man or woman, should find their own limits. I'll have to show her your channel, I know she'll love it.

Built a version of this for my shop.. sort of a mash-up of your version and Jay Bates'. I installed everything with hard PVC around my shop to have multiple stations so I was never moving my hoses around, and it's the best damn thing ever. It vents right outside, and with the baffle just right, it actually vents ZERO visible dust outside, and all of it is contained in the trashcan. Yay! BTW, I also added a remote switch that I clip on my belt... so besides changing my gates for each new station, I can turn it on and off from everywhere in the shop.

Vent it trough a water filter outside and problem solved. ( Just shove the exit hose in a trash can half full of water, the water will collect the dust and only air will escape. Basically the same principal of a water filter vacuum cleaner. You can actually mix the wet sawdust with paper mulch and have homemade firewood.

Why do you have 2 pieces sandwiched together on top of the trash can. Couldn't you rout a lip on both sides, one for the trash can and one for the intake baffle or do you need the full thickness of the 2 pieces of plywood?

I installed a 50 hp dust blower unit. 80A at 480V... had to pour a 10' x 8' concrete slab to put in on... That was HELLATIOUS install...

This may have occurred to you by now but have you checked to be sure that the rotation of the impeller is the same direction as the airflow in the separator? On every thein separator I have seen the inlet is to the left not the right so you may have the air changing directions in the chamber which would definitely lead to a major drop in efficiency. It's also recommended that the outlet tube be extended about 2/3rd's of the depth of the chamber to enhance separation instead of just barely penetrating the top as you have there. I believe you are on the right track and encourage you to stick with it. Endeavor to persevere.

No, I wish I had sisters. I am typically drawn to tomboys. I wish females and males had equal rights in every way possible -- except giving birth. I have a small amount of communication insight that women don't expect men to know -- the female code words meant to exclude men. One woman said to other, in the movie Dark Shadows, "Do you think the sexes should be equal." The other replied, " Heavens no! Men would become unmanageable. " I am a neophyte with workings of You Tube, but with your husbands permission, I would like to become You Tube friends with you. You would make the second one. Now I have to check the Oxford dictionary to make sure I used the word neophyte correctly.

Nice Video, April! I made a similair device to use with a vacuum. My house had flooded in a crawl space after some serious rain. I made the same exact plywood top with two holes to fit Shopvac ™ hoses. One male and one female. I installed a 3” PVC valve at the bottom of the garbage can. My shop vac was plugged in outside and a short vac hose went to the plywood top. Then, I used all my other vac hoses to decend into my flooded crawl space. The garbage can filled up faster than the 3” PVC value would drain it….but pushing over the garbage can full of water wrecks it. I happened to have 3” hose so I turn the Shopvac arpound and pumped the water out with air pressure. The system works so good I can’t believe there are no commerical units on the market.

Interesting approach. In my system, also using a Harbor Freight collector, I added a garbage can at the beginning of the ductwork, with the collector at the opposite end. The top of the garbage can has an inlet and outlet facing opposite directions, which creates a vortex to spin out the larger dust. However, there is still a fair amount of fine dust which makes it back to the collector itself, where it falls into a plastic bag. I think you might find there is more dust than you think if you vent to the outdoors. Your neighbor might not be happy about the sawdust drifts! BTW, it's wonderful to see a woman tackling this kind of activity. Rock on!

Excellent! It is good seeing a female's take on what is perceived as a male paste time. She has brains and beauty, that guy is one lucky dude. I do agree with another poster though, regarding putting another piece of wood under your work, while drilling through it, especially on your workbench surface. What month of WOOF was your shop in, Mike? April, if you were to direct the exhaust into another box that had a few filters in it prior to exhausting outside, that should remove a large amount of the fine dust. If you set up a removable"collection box" inside and place it before the filters, you could easily empty dust that settles in the area prior to the filters. The filters will also. E able to be easily replaced. This would be easy to build and I suspect you have enough scraps on hand to build it for free. As others have said, longer videos are better as they are more informative/detailed. 10--5 minutes is a good length, in my opinion. You're enjoying that router, too......

Out of all the videos I have seen, this one I like the best for dust collection. I have the same harbor freight DC and I have mine inside my shop. Now I want to look at putting it outside

I love it April. I used the plastic super dust deputy on my HF set-up and get no dust in the bag. Of course, there goes all the cost savings. Great job!

Nice to have it outside of the shop, that noise is a killer. I suggest getting a remote control for your on/off switch.

Great video. Every one I have talked to that has vented to the outside is very pleased with the results. Noise is a factor so you would want to consider the neighbors and how close you are to them.

Forgive me if I'm repeating someone else's comment but I did the Jay Bates conversion & I direct vent outside by storing the unit in my garage-shop & piping through a window I removed & replaced with plywood. I live in a very suburban neighborhood with sub 1/4 acre city type lots. The neighbor is like 15 feet away. I've direct vented for 2 years & only Sunday did a neighbor finally ask what that big pvc pipe was for! I shoot the dust down into the bushes & the rain/lawnmower take care of the evidence. Nobody would ever notice if it weren't for the 4 inch pvc pipe. So I wouldn't worry too much about what was coming out, maybe just find a way to direct it down. Thanks for the video!
