How to modify a Terävä Jääkäripuukko knife || Stacked leather handle, no coating, convex

Hi there!
In this video I'd like to share my experience in modifing a Terävä Jääkäripuukko (aka Jakari pukko).
As many people knows Jääkäripuukko is a great cheap-but-sturdy knife. My attempt here is to change the aesthetics as well as improve the functionality of this knife.
So I'll rmake a stacked leather handle, I'll remove the coating and I'll make slightly convex bevel.

Great video! The leather tool to punch the long hole for the leather spacers is a CREW PUNCH. You can make a basic one with a small round metal pipe & a vice....just a little trial and error to work out the size needed to get the length & width. HOPE YOU WORE A FACE MASK WHEN USING THE BELT SANDER...! Leather dust is EXTREMELY CARCINOGENIC = similar risk to ASBESTOS.

I've been making knives for a couple of years and finally made my first stacked leather handle, WARNING "patience" is needed! The leather makes a great feeling handle though. 😏👍 Great video! Thanks for sharing.

Love my 110..it's ugly but super comfortable in the hand. Your leather mod looks so much better. Hopefully it's as comfortable or better Great video man. Thanks for sharing

To be honest this new handle is very confortable. But still the ratio between the hight and the width is still not y favorite. I shaped it to close to the original handle proportion.. I definitely prefer something little more round like my Bark River Bushcrafter. The filing of the leather is very cool and I think has a great potential as handle material.

How did you attach the rear brass plate? It’s not clear in tge video

Hi! I tapered the tang and I press in the square hole of the "pommel" that is basically a double plate. This seems was already enough to fix it. To make more secure I slightly pinned the tang... Unfortunately I did not realize the camera was not recording!! Sorry about that!

Thanks a lot! Well, I use my fix blades mostly outdoor for bushcraft related tasks... I have a decent piece of land to manage with wood and fields... covex for me is the best geometry: great on any wood, good for ropes, rubber pipes, low density plastic... it's easy for basic/utilitarian carving and at the same time pretty strong to keep an edge long enough. I believe other grinds are valuable to but for me the convex is the way to go for a fix blade to use as a tool outdoor. Just an opinion, clear. Thanks for witching!

Consider that the use I make of the knife is very similar to yours

@@baudosgarage4761 it depends: can you modify the handle (and so the sheath)? So the convex ground of the f1x is almost unbeatable. But if you want something ready to go the lionsteel is great!

Dang, man, that is beautyful. A lot of work, but nice job. I own the same knife, and truth been told, it's ugly. It performs than some far more expensive knives, but it's an ugly fuck. Only thing, i don't like a convex grind. If i changed this, i'd do a full flat grind, because i think, it's the most versatile grind, and i am not one that takes a knife for woodworking, one for food prep, one for skinning game and one for cutting toenails, when i'm out in the woods. One fixed blade, and one victorinox as a back up. The saber grind with the secondary bevel that the jäkkaripukkoo has, works good enough for me, so there's that. But you made there a very unique thing of beauty. Props to you....

Well, short answer: yes, for me is good. Long answer: the steel is tough, very tough. The edge retention is good considering the steel, I believe that they are very good in the heat treatment. For sure out there you can find tons of more performing steels. But at this price point? I don't believe so. So for the money a great blade!

Not really a coating on the knife tho. Just a product of the multi heat treatment they do on them that they dont remove or polish out.

This is the worst blade I ever had. The heat treatment: The worst I 've ever seen. The edge geometry: Again the worst I've ever seen. The Grind: The worst I've ever seen, all the grinds where uneven and by a lot. Fit and finish: The worst I've ever seen. Handle: I've never felt pain, on the muscles of my hand, and that was happening, just after 30 seconds of feathersticking. Sheath: It got all dinged up, after the first use. Wherever it hits, leather shatters like if it was paper. The edge chipped like crazy, no matter what edge geometry I tried, or how much steel I removed, the edge kept chipping. For example, after a complete featherstick with a fresh sharp edge, the edge looked like it was a saw and not a knife.. THAT many chips... It never got razor sharp, which is one more proof, of the very bad heat treatment... I didn't even bother to send the knife back, because I read many comments and reviews, where people complaining about the same issues, send the knife back, but the replacement knives, had exactly the same issues!! So why bother?? Whoever praises this knife, has zero knowledge of what a good knife or not is. (even if he was lucky, and got a good heat treated one)
