Love the videos guys. Some of the best, most entertaining, and legit knife reviews on KZfaq. Seriously, it’s amazing how many knife review videos are just people talking and showing the knife and never cut anything with it. However, I think it’s odd that you are so adamant that the Skrama is a chopping machete and not a knife. It’s the size of a Bowie, or competition chopper, and no one calls thise a machete. To me a machete is a much thinner, more flexible, significantly longer bladed tool, intended to be a “slicer” for cutting vegetation like vines, canes, reeds, grasses, etc. I think the Skrama is absolutely a big knife, and a hell of a well designed one at that. My Skrama is without hesitation my idea “one tool” option. I took mine out in a rain storm yesterday, and harvested firewood, made rain fly stakes, carved a spear, made a wooden “grappling hook” processed my firewood, processed my fat wood, made feathersticks (shavings), made fatwood lint (spine scrapings), scraped my ferrorod, and made a fire with it. The two different grinds on the blade make a phenomenal chopper on the distal part of the blade, the wharncliff tip allows for detailed carving holding the blade by the spine choked up towards the tip, the grip has two or three different positions for detail, light chopping, and power chopping, the rubber coating is great in all weather conditions including rain and mud, and the sharper second grind on the proximal part of the blade is as sharp and fine as any pukko, allowing for very detailed work like notching and feather sticking. Including slicing fat wood like a kitchen knife dices cucumbers. It is one hell of a compact powerhouse, that does the work of a hatchet and pukko, I never go camping without it.

Great job again! This may be splitting hairs (pun intended - my Skrama sure did split hairs out of the box), but the designer describes the Skrama as a "heavy duty bush knife". Sure, it's primarily a chopper and that's what the long handle is for - but you can choke up on that handle nicely and the first 5 centimetres of the blade feature a 25 degree grind for finer work. It's really designed as a one-tool-option sort of knife and was inspired by the medieval scramasax. Isn't a machete rather longer and thinner and used for underbrush, sugarcane and other stuff that you won't find in a northern forest...?

@FrankSchweppe 6 жыл бұрын
They are if weight is not important. Skrama plus the 110, or even just a Mora. If you want to travel light(er) on hike, the 140 can be a very effective one-tool option (assuming that you already have a good folder on you, or a multitool). Just don't try to chop down whole forests with it. ;-)

The Skrama is hands down my favorite large knife. And I do classify it as a knife instead of a machete. Machetes tend to be much thinner and lighter. But, there are all sorts of machetes so I guess it's just semantics. The Skrama does suprisingly well with finer work with the dual grind. It will never compete with a Kansbol or other dedicated bushcraft knife in that area but it's quite capable. Anyway, fun comparison!

First comment I ever write on a DBK-video, even though I've seen and enjoyed quite a few. I've also made a couple of videos myself, and some of them focus on chopping (both with knives and axes, and sometimes knives vs. axes). I saw in a comment below where PREPAREDMIND101 mentioned my channel, and the success of the JX5 (in my first chopping contest). I really like the JX5 for its great versatility; being a great chopper for its size and weight as well as being a good all around camp knife etc. Out of all the knives I've used and own, and speaking solely of pure chopping performance, the best ones I've used are the Grasso Bolo III, Parang and Battle Cleaver - all made by Bark River. But they are all large and heavy and not quite as versatile as the JX5; especially the 2nd Gen. JX5. The JX5 is my go-to chopper, should I feel the need to have one with me when out hiking/camping. I do prefer using axes and hatches though, like the Outdoor Axe from Gränsfors Bruk. But variation can be fun at times. ;) Keep it up!

Thanks for the long-awaited review. The Terava Skrama is made from 80CrV2 Steel which is tough (I have made knives from it). I would like to see a second review where you demonstrate making feather sticks with the secondary grind near the handle, I have found that it does well with this. It is a knife, albeit ugly, not a machete it was designed to carry out most bushcraft tasks, and it does in my experience of using one for a couple of years. I am not a fan of big knives, but this is the one I would carry.

Also now available is the Skrama 200. With the same edge profile as the 240 but a bit shorter and less massive, with a sigle-grip position handle. Not a better carving knife, but less capable as a chopper in an even cheaper, shorter design.

@@ajaxtelamonian5134 Look up Taiter Hukari. It's a modern version what a hukari used to be: a broken sword, taken from battlefield and then used in farming/forests. Varusteleka used to sell those Hukari's made by Taiter, until Taiter changed the design for worse and Varusteleka then designed their own product: skrama, short of skramasaksi which in english is Seax...

Yowzers. Great vid yet again with good humour . I agree with you lads, good chopper and steel for the price. I find the Skarma nicely balanced too, with a comfy 2 position handle to do close up push cuts I find the longer handle counteracts the blade length giving a lighter controllable neutral feeling as well as being able to deliver big chops when hand sat towards rear of grip . Seems like 80CrV2 is a better carbon steel 1095 Cro-Van with a better edge retention as long as heat treatment is done correctly which the Skarma seems to have nailed. Good stuff. Can't wait to see what you guys are planning for next Thursday. Take care lads all the best.

The skrama is an amazing knife but in reality the focus really lies in chopping with the skrama where the fallkniven is more allround. Also the steel on the fallkniven is better. However not so much better that it justifies the extra costs. Nontheless we love both and we can recommend both. Knives and tools also doesn’t sell the modern bowie. Knives and tools doesnt tell us what to do and not do luckily

I used to carry a similar monster back in the Middle Ages. Btw, nice gas/ferro trick.😸

AWESOME video as always. Love these head to head tests. I would recommend getting a Jaakkaripuukko to go with the Skrama, same maker, also insanely good for the Bushcrafty tasks. NOW, there is a feature of the Skrama you MIGHT have overlooked. It has a dual grind. Near the handle there is a short section with a scandi-vex grind meant for feather stick making, notching, carving etc. Great for finer tasks. Also, there is a technique involving a lanyard which will allow you to utilize the tip of the Skram for close up detailed work like drilling, skinning or whatever. Let me know if you need details. Stay crazy, brothers!!
