I spent two nights monitoring the US Air Force radio transmissions and also making a few ham radio contacts from a glorious new location.
The High Frequency Global Communications System (HFGCS) is a network of single sideband shortwave transmitters of the United States Air Force which is used to communicate with aircraft in flight, ground stations and some United States Navy surface assets. All worldwide receiving and transmitting sites in the HFGCS system are remotely controlled from Andrews Air Force Base and Grand Forks Air Force Base. Before 1 October 2002 it was known as the Global High Frequency System (GHFS).
The primary HFGCS voice frequencies are 4724.0 kHz, 8992.0 kHz, 11175.0 kHz, and 15016.0 kHz. In addition to the HFGCS, U.S. aircraft frequently use Military Auxiliary Radio System (MARS) HF stations (13927.0 kHz) and Canadian Forces HF stations (11232.0 kHz) to relay messages.
One common use for the HFGCS is to place telephone calls from the aircraft in flight by means of the Defence Switched Network (DSN) to an U.S. Air Force base. The HFGCS also carries Emergency Action Messages (EAMs). (Info from Wikipedia)

Waiting for some warm nights here where I can set up a tent on the top terrace and work some HF from the QTH here.

What a pleasant video. Thanks for uploading. The space seems cozy, if chilly, and the landscape perfect for hamming. Loved the time-lapse and the sunset, too. I've been considering getting back into ham. I've kept my license valid. It's a General class, N5ZXX. I'm temped to use an SDR like you have in one segment of your video. I'm not sure of the quality of such a tiny radio, but they seem OK on KZfaq. Otherwise, Icom would be where I'd look, or maybe an old-school Drake receiver and Transmitter. I think tubes are still available. An antenna like yours would do me well, too. Thanks again. I'll check out more of your videos and maybe we'll meet on-air some day. 73

Should put some WebSDR stuff on list of useful related sites. Thanks to people that generously host a feed from their receivers, you can listen in via the internet rather than having to invest in the gear. (Having the gear is still neat, but for newbies or a casual interest - then listening via a web page is nice. Listings with those sites are also useful for DX testing to various locations if broadcasting too.)

I am relatively new to HF listening. I mistakenly believed that HF had no military, commercial, logistics, digital satellite communication, and emergency traffic. I am just now barely becoming aware of maritime emergency frequencies, aviation communications, satellite imagery, and more! I always thought those things were VHF and UHF only.

The stuff you thought was related to the snow looks like a solar charge controller, I'm off grid and get similar but it's usually when it's really sunny and the controllers are working hard, not the other way around when there's snow.. weird. Is your XYL anti HF? That's a cute dog house/man cave.
