In this video, I will show you how to mortise a door jamb using a PORTER-CABLE Door Hinge Template (59370). A mortise is the recess that the hinge fits into. You will need to do this if you are putting a salvage door into a new door jamb (also called a door frame). This template guide is essential to making an accurate mortise in the door jamb.

Thank you for posting this video. Do you have any tips for mortising the latch strike on the door jamb please?

Glad that you found the video helpful. I haven’t ever used a template for a strike plate, what I have done is line the strike plate up and install it without a mortise. When you tighten it down, it should indent the wood enough to mark the outline and the latch opening (or you can trace it). Then use a spade bit to drill out the latch recess and chisels to cut the mortise (drive the chisel in around the outline to cut the wood before chiseling the mortise).

Great question, you can do it either way. I stained first because I was doing a bunch of staining for this remodel, so these pieces were done with everything else and installed later. I did go back and apply 1 coat of stain to the mortises. You certainly can stain the whole thing after mortising, whatever is more efficient for your project. Thanks for watching!

The kit is made to work with existing door frames. Whether or not you need to remove the door stops will depend on your specific door frame.

Very informative!… would this jig work with jambs that have the stops installed. I know ur thinking just remove the stops but the door are all installed and painted client decided now she wants larger ball bearing hinges this is my dilemma. Also I have to do the same with the entry door this is the one that has me worried. Really would love to use a jig to use this jig to save time… thanks you

Like you said, this would be easier without the stops. The template is about 1/4” thick between the cutout and where it would fit against the door stop (it looks thicker when viewed from the top, but there is a recess on the underside to accommodate a stop). Adding 1/16” offset from the router bit, you could cut the mortise within 5/16” of the stop with this guide.
