We should not assume that a lack of motivation is an intrinsic problem. As leaders, we should first evaluate whether or not we've created an environment that inspires our employees. In order to spark motivation, people must feel seen and valued.
+ + +
Simon is an unshakable optimist. He believes in a bright future and our ability to build it together.
Described as “a visionary thinker with a rare intellect,” Simon has devoted his professional life to help advance a vision of the world that does not yet exist; a world in which the vast majority of people wake up every single morning inspired, feel safe wherever they are and end the day fulfilled by the work that they do.
Simon is the author of multiple best-selling books including Start With Why, Leaders Eat Last, Together is Better, and The Infinite Game.

You can definitely unmotivate the motivated. When I put so much time and effort into the role, we all built a great relationship with employees and hit our targets and beyond, constantly. We were met with decreased hours (meaning less pay) no payrise for me for 5 years, even though I have asked for it, but everyone in my charge suddenly gets paid more than me.... Like what the hell? Not to be jelous of them. They deserve the pay increase. So I handed in my resignation and only then they offered to pay me DOUBLE. Too late to save my motivation. I stayed and did the bare minimum for a year, then moved to a less paying job which I can now stay motivated in with the fairness throughout the company. Wonderful place.

i feel the same way, except this is how i define inspiration. motivation is like a supreme why, it's like a real reason to do something that drives you no matter what. inspiration is just like that fleeting feeling you get like you're ready to conquer anything and then you wake up the next morning and feel like shit again.

Dear Simon, As a teacher, that's what I've been trying to do and to say to everyone around me (students and no only students)! To add one more "term" to what you so brilliantly put, I would say "Sense of Belonging". You're great and truly an inspiration to us all! Keep making our lives better. I hope someday I'll do the same for you!

Having the same problem as a teacher. I don't know what to do with students who don't want to speak, or participate or who don't care about the subject. I prepare games, i prepare presentations for the grammatical topics so they could understand better. I use music and videos, i do not scream at them, i am not a screaming person) but still nothing. And everybody says i should find a special approach to each student. Wtf! How is that even possible and what about my sanity?!)) I wish i could be inspirational teacher like in the movies, but i can't. If a student doesn't want to learn, i don't think there is anything i could do to help.

@@aidakalybaeva758 If you take a step back and read your comment, you will understand what is going on.. I lead a team of my own and it’s very similar in our situation. To lead people you don’t need to motivate them as Simon puts it, you inspire. I will spend my time to also get to know the individuals that I work with. Not just as a courtesy but to really understand them and to build the bond/trust. Have you ever ask yourself what do those kids want to do or learn because all you said was what you’ve done and what you think is interesting? Let them have a voice in say perhaps? Also what is the expectation? You try something and it failed. Maybe your expectations are too high? Remember that they are not you. Kids don’t understand the world as we do and if you really care as a teacher, you won’t give up Disclaimer: i’m no expert in the subject matter. I have 2 boys of my own and a team that i lead. i’m only a leader who seeks to inspire and also always trying to learn

I've tried to tell my bosses a million times. 5 seconds of praise will generate infinitely more motivation than 30 minutes of "do it or else" pressure. Every leader should HAVE to read How to win friends and influence people because it just great life-applicable advice. "Praise the slightest improvement and praise every improvement. Be "hearty in your approbation and lavish in your praise." - Dale Carnegie I had a boss once that when I screwed up or my team screwed up. We would have a meeting and instead of getting reamed out, we put the error aside and collectively brainstormed how to avoid it in the future. Being included in preventing the mistake in the future instead of being reprimanded changed the entire dynamic. We felt like part of the team instead of just employees. We walked out of the office feeling empowered and ready to face the challenges in front of us.

This is what I keep telling to the people under my care: 1. What's your career goal? I'll help you achieve it even if your goal is to get out of this company in the future. Let's work on your skills to achieve that goal. 2. You might be in a job you don't like but you can use that to achieve your dream job. Let's work together. We have weekly meetings discussing our Lessons, Achievements, Goals, and Struggles -- these are outside of company tasks. We talk about personal finance, personal development, books we read, and etc. I'm still constantly searching for ways to improve our team. The key is to keep in mind that they are human beings not chessboard pieces.

From an education background, they usually give us Maslow's hierarchy of needs. When basic needs are met, people can turn to self actualisation. But if you have students with physical needs, safety needs, or needs for belonging not being met, it overrides their ability to focus or care about other things. Another way to look at it is everyone is motivated, but towards different things. If I can understand what I am motivated to do and apply that knowledge of myself to areas where I am unmotivated, it can help. I think the work needs to be a way of living out a positive identity that I am congruent with.

As a business graduate and manager you can motivate people - Step 1 Remove what is demotivating them, Step 2 Add whats aligned with their dreams and objectives. When it comes to removing what demotivates them in almost all cases its crappy managers or the fallout from them.

It would be wonderful if all leaders felt motivated to inspire others around them. Sometimes the desire to see that the business does well and that the customers return, are the main factors that drive leaders to antagonize their most valuable asset, their employees. You're so right that taking responsibility for having unmotivated persons on the team is the first step to recognizing that they have the power to encourage the team along or help them to become better employees, so that when they leave, they are equipped with all they need to give of their best somewhere else.

There is no need to be a boss to inspire people. All of us have responsibility to help our fellow employees, to be kind with them to encourage them etc. It is nice to see that they respond positively. It gives us the feeling that we have done something great. That is why it is always worth to try.

Mincing words here (I totally agree in what’s being said in the video): I do like to add that “give them a sense of purpose” or “make them feel heard” still comes across as hollow. In my opinion you should not need to “give them a sense”, but truly “give them”. And instead of “make them feel heard”, truly “hear them”. When it’s coming to artificially setting processes in place in a company culture that isn’t mature or ready enough to support those, the problems lie deeper and it’s up to management to fix those and start with the root. Employees will eventually come to the conclusion that it’s just a thin layer of shiny chrome on a rusty vehicle otherwise.

Thanks for the video. Motivating the unmotivated can be a challenge, but it starts with understanding their underlying needs and desires. Focus on creating a sense of purpose, meaning, and autonomy in their work. Set clear expectations, provide regular feedback and recognition, and offer growth and development opportunities. Cultivate a supportive environment that encourages collaboration, experimentation, and learning from mistakes. Finally, lead by example and demonstrate a positive attitude and work ethic. Remember, motivation comes from within, but as a leader, you can create the conditions that help people tap into their own intrinsic motivation.

I was already halfway burned out from the workload and dead-end career (IT in public sector..) and Covid and the countless pointless regulations and behavioral changes it mandated killed all purpose and autonomy in that career for me.. not to mention the toxic, bullying, backstabbing bitches (males!) I've found my motivation comes from three key sources: (a) Is the business involved in something I consider worthwhile? (b) Am I doing work that is interesting and challenging in the right ways (e.g. in terms of workload and not politics)? (c) Am I being treated fairly, respectfully in substance rather than language, and as a partner rather than tool?

Motivation is a mystery... We can call it some kind of energy. We pass it on. But where is it born? Is it infinite? If we can motivate others, can't we motivate selves? If we can't, maybe we can't motivate others as well? Could we create it artificially? With pills or electric signal or a certain visual\audial pattern? It may seem like a very simple question to some people. But I say... motivation is the power of God. It's what makes us believe we're not just piles of atoms but we have free will. Because will is sentient motivation.

What would be helpful is a definition of the word motivated...or how does "motivated" look, particularly in a work environment/setting? If the acceptable definition includes the act of being driven, ambitious, taking the initiative to accomplish set goals (whether team oriented or personal) and doing all of the above with excellence...then I believe many employees (particularly new-hires) exhibit these behaviors, but motivation can oftentimes be diffused by toxic forces (whether internal to the organization or external to the organization) beyond an employees control. My recommendation, as referenced by Simon, would require a holistic understanding of the dynamics at play; especially pertaining to a work setting and this may take some time. Once both time and understanding have synced; I believe decisions can be made on how best to move forward with the situation (i.e. transition of responsibilities; transition of role; or otherwise).

I have been thinking about this as a director. Yes, Simon is absolutely correct. Employers have some responsibility to motivate their staff. The most important word here is "SOME". Then, work towards being a team player.

@@christinek6082 I have seen that video. Why should employers have trust in your laziness? How old are you? If you are an adult, act like one.

@@christinek6082 The fact that you are complaining about this proves that you are not worthy of hiring. Severely lacking the initiative to do anything. Are you a baby?

This is an awesome take on motivation Simon! A good leader takes into account all the reasons an employee may not be "motivated". More importantly, they take responsibility !! Great video, can't wait to watch more.

I wouldn't say I am motivated being an essential worker tbh. I personally take pride in what I do and bosses tend to take advantage of that. When you don't receive the pay or validation, it's like a what's the point situation.
