Does your bass drum sound too boomy and ringy? Are you looking to lasso those overtones and rein them in for something precise and punchy?
You can muffle your bass drum using stuff you already have at home. Here’s how I do it.

I’ve been a towel tech for some of the best musicians in the world. The Terrible Textiles, Wicked Washcloth, Roaring Rag, you name it. Do you even know the optimal thread count for a 13” snare towel? Doubt it. Don’t call me the idiot because you aren’t on my level in the textile music scene. Just throw in the towel and be done with it.

So many ways to go about it. Simon Phillips has a neat technique he’s been using for a while, and it’s evolved over time. It went from rolled up towels against the heads to no resonant head and a blanket with a paint can sitting on it.

Yes this works great and I use it for my studio kit that never goes anywhere. But if you are a gigging drummer, the second you pack this drum in a case, pack in car, drive to gig, unload and setup your kit, the towels are completely a mess inside the kick and you'll need to pull off a head and re-do everything again. Not practical until you solve for affixing the towels so they never move in transit.

I ordered a pack of sound dampening panels (the soft, 1' square kind) and glued them to the inside of the drum, filling only the bottom half of the kit from head to head. I did have to cut a few of them down to make sure they fit with just 1/2" of overhang on the sides so the heads press them in a bit when I put them back on. Since the panels I got were more mid range absorption, I can leave it as is for a slightly more open "rock" sound, or I can then add a towel and press it against the batter head for a much "tighter" sound. Using less towel and more of the soft panels I noticed it tends to leave the lows alone more. I also tune my resonant head looser than my batter head. On top of that I use wooden beaters, so it's a very nice, even and natural "metal" sounding tone that still sounds fairly deep. For my current rock band, since we lean a bit toward the metal sound, this is a perfect setup for our overall mix. The bass drum has enough attack that cuts through the mix and enough depth to punch through the bass guitar. The sound is very consistent from hands to feet, too, because with both top and bottom I am using wood on drum heads. I haven't found a better muffling method in the 26 years I've been playing. Thanks for uploading consistently great content. Love your channel and your insights.
@LowKey657
@LowKey657 5 ай бұрын
The only way to cut through the mix with your kick sound is to have it muffled and mic d up then the engineer is gonna eq it and hopefully crank it in your monitor and in the mix. The kit should physically hit you in the body.

I’d also augment muffling by purchasing the roll of window weather stripping from a hardware store. It’s got the adhesive on it and you can cut it to your desired length and then stick it right on.

I use two different methods: first method, 2 Evans EQ Pads inside mine, barely touching the batter and reso heads. The second method I'll use: two felt strips, one on the inside of each head, and an EQ pad in the middle not touching either head, to help with sound as well as provide a spot for a Shure Beta91A if a venue uses that mic. Both options I use a porthole, and both heads are NOT premuffled. For me this gets the maximum amount of attack with minimal resonance (but doesn't kill all resonance).

Great! Having a go at this today. I think when I have to buy a new bass drum resonant (I think they should have a logo on them saying "Front toward enemy" 😉) I'll get one with a hole in it. Well, I'll look into it. I mean I'll look into the whole hole-vs-no-hole aspects, not I'll look into the hole. But having a hole would make this one less, or easier job to do because the reso head won't need removing to get them adjusted nicely each time the kit's been moved. Right, let's see which two towels my wife won't notice go missing...

I use the DW Pillow which is a stretched out H shape. Basically it does the same thing as our boi Jared shows us the towels do in the video. But it doesn’t cover as much of the head as the towels. However it does have the Velcro attachments for the shell. Which hold it in place. With both the batter and resonant heads I tend to keep a “snug” feel on them. Just a little past getting the wrinkles out. So it’s probably a very similar sound to his kick drum. Minus the part where it’s a completely different shell lol.

In a previous video you used an Evans EQ Pad, is this 2 towel method superior to the EQ pad or is this a “use what you’ve got” kind of a method?
@nikitamaltsev4987
@nikitamaltsev4987 5 жыл бұрын
when I use this kind of muffling towel near the beating head always moves to the center of a drum and doesn't touch the head anymore. Very often it falls and 2 edges just lie on the bottom of a bass drum. Thats why I decided to use evans EQ pad system and all problems went away.
