Now, everyone head over and play Barracuda, and/or Good Times Bad Times. If you don’t want to sprain something, try Ordinary Love by Sade; it’ll give your foot a workout. Try alternating between 1/16s and 1/8s on the hi-hat for an added challenge.

This is essentially a toe-flat action. I paused the video at the beginning of the stroke and advanced frame by frame - the toe throws the pedal down and lifts off before the batter makes contact. Then as the pedal comes back up on the rebound, the foot comes down flat for the second stroke. To advance frame by frame, pause the video and use the < > arrow keys.

I always love these visualization techniques. They work so well for most people. I do the same on guitar and it can be the difference between years of frustration and having it click in a short time. Thanks for this.

I've tried the swivel (slide) technique and I just can't get it right, could be my pedal, I don't know. However, I've been using the technique you're showing for a while and have had good grooves as a result. I think it's the best all-around style to use. Thanks Rob.

I lift the knee slightly and use a toe to heel technique, dropping the foot per-say and using the weight of the leg, allowing the beater to come off of the head and ready for the next stroke... was taught and told its a Bonham technique although finding relatable material has proven difficult, many videos focusing on the foot and ankle only.

shoes are the utmost importance in my opinion - one should train, practice learn with a shoe type - then set the spring tension for heel down , heel up and neutral foot position. they are all 3 different muscles and require different spring tension. one will have to find that magic spot for them. heel down is great for complex or full beat patterns - heel up is super great for volume and straight up speed when using both peddles - neutral i find is the best all around if you can pull it off. leather slides , rubber dont , that would be on the pedal itself - thick rubber soles can limit your speed and accuracy when the beat is complex.. try it and you will notice all the differences yourself and maybe have a light bulb come on moment - love yah Mr. Rob sir Thanks for the lesson !!

Man, I don't know how some people play in super thick-soled shoes. I just can't...well, I probably can I just have never practiced...I prefer to play in the shoes that I find it most easy to play in. Which makes me lazy, I know. What I'm trying to say is, I think your tip about practicing with different shoes is on the money. I have found myself in the predicament of needing to wear dress shoes for the occasion of the gig but wearing my AllBirds (check em out man SOOO comfy and easy to play in) and lookin like a fool to anyone who was paying attention to my footwear behind the kit. Excellent content as always. Peace and love, brother.

For those of you who are gear heads and have had the opportunity to use several different single pedals, what is your favorite? I’ve been using two TAMA Iron Cobra pedals since 1994. I bought two new ones in 2006 at the request of my drum teacher at West Coast Drums in Orange County, CA and I haven’t used any other pedal since. When I started playing in 1977 I used two Ludwig Ghost’s and stayed with them until 1994. I live in a rural area of Oregon, far from any music stores. Just wondering if there’s a standout these days that’s worth the investment. I don’t play gigs anymore, but just practice and record with several of my old band members from back in the 80s. Thanks for your input!

Excellent! It works well! This visualization pairs well with your push-tap kick pedal approach. I found my foot moving in the manner you illustrated after practicing the push-tap approach. While doing continuous dotted eighths like this, starting slowly and ramping up speed, eventually I could actualy feel the pedal's fulcrum point as a rounded object. I need more practice to get there faster!

Rob, haven't seen you in awhile. Looking Good DUDE. You lost some weight!! I'm jealous. Your point about the shoes is Big. I find that the different affect my being able to play the kick drum pedal. I'm only a recreational Drummer at 70 yo, and play to my Music, but always looking to improve. I am unable to raise and slide my right leg like that, so I play strictly Heel down. But with more practice, I'm getting better with the solid Doubles W/O using a double pedal. Happy Drumming All.

I would love to see a demonstration showing the difference between playing 16th note doubles as compared to playing a triplet pattern on the bass pedal. By this I mean, with a 4/4 beat, your right hand is playing the quarter notes and your bass pedal is playing the Trip-Let pattern. One (high-hat) Trp-Let (bass pedsl)...Two (high-hat)...etc. I know that when I was learning this triplet pattern, inadequately described above, I had a hard time hearing and differentiating between the two and invariably slipped into playing 16th notes on the bass instead of the triplet beat. I am sure that I am not the only one who has had some difficulties mastering these two techniques. Thoughts?

I used to drum barefoot because I preferred it, but also as an 18 yo hardcore/sludge/rock drummer I’m sure subconsciously I had this romanticized, macho-ish flex idea behind it. Im just now realizing a lot of that is attached to Bonham’s solo from the How the West was Won dvd when he starts doing mf’ing triplets and shit with his bare hands hitting die-cast rims lol.

I think my problem is balancing while my foot is up. I have a natural tendency to play heel down because it keeps me more stable on the throne. As a result, the doubles don't sound as powerful and my ankle is working too hard.
@bnashvegas
@bnashvegas 2 жыл бұрын
I would experiment with different throne heights if you’re having trouble in that area. It could be just a bit higher or lower could drastically change the unbalanced feeling you’re having. Another issue could be how close or far back from the kick you are sitting. All these things have huge impacts on what you’re feeling.
