I get that the video is a joke, but I feel like this correction must be added: "-vania" is in fact a nonsense word that comes from "Sylvania" meaning "woods" or "forest" , so clearly, the genre should be limited to item/ability-gated action adventure platforming that also involves forests. Therefore, a Dark-Souls-esque game that is set entirely in a city/cave system/hell/etc is clearly a Souls-Like, but if there is even the hint of a forest... BAM! You've got yourself a Soulsvania. Joking aside, fun video, you earned yourselves a subscriber.

You forgot L.A. NOIR. With all the notes you take in that game it's a "PencilVania"

Castlevania came out only 1 month after metroid. There is no way they could have been inspired by each eachother cause they would have been in development at the same time

Funnily enough, the original Castlevania is NOT what this is named after, as the first few games in the series are standard level-by-level platformers, not metroidvanias. It's named after Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which definitely was inspired by metroid
