I attended an online interview two days ago. I spent 4 days preparing for the interview, I was mentally ready and raring to go. The interview started, the Hiring manager didn't even introduce herself and the 1st question she asked was to explain my current job role, and then she straight up asked what my salary is (I come from the middle east and it has become normal for hiring managers/ recruiters to ask this question and the interviewees are expected to give an answer) when I told her how much my salary was, she ended the interview by saying, "Thank you so much for your time, we'll get back to you." , and she disconnected the call...... It was extremely unprofessional, and not to mention, a total utter waste of my time....and I am glad I didn't end up getting a job there. Why are people like this...

In my opinion, they did you a favor by not wasting your time. I went through 3 separate interviews and hours of prep time with a company before the hiring manager tells me that I was overqualified for their position and that they did not have the authorization needed to meet even the low end of my salary range. What really pissed me off was that the HR recruiter in my 1st interview asked for a salary range and said it was manageable. I was extremely pissed!

Wow. You should definitely say something to their management team. Often times they give people the interviewer duties and trust that they are being professional. That is not the case all the time. Say something

In my last salary negotiation, I waited until the end but then they asked me to make an offer first. What I did is ask a little bit more money than what I was thinking I was worth it. And only to make it seem like I really knew what I was talking about, I gave them a number that was not round (like 71 instead of 70). They then offered to me a little bit less and I accepted immediately. One of the best KZfaq channels out there, keep up the great work!

This analogy is perfect and how it ties to the salary range! First don’t get eliminated then become an asset so you “have a leg to stand on” before you start negotiating a salary!

Great videos! I did this all wrong and somehow was not eliminated first round. Company reached out for first interview via email, I replied asking for salary range, they provided range and I asked for max amount during first interview. Was just asked for second interview and I'm now more confident. Thanks!

Thank you for the video. I had never, until now, understood how the game worked with naming a salary range, because I was not aware of the “Gatekeeper” fase and fear of being offered the lowest end of the range, as well as not being aware that I had more leverage once I got past the further stages of the hiring process. This video goes hand in hand with that other one that teaches about salary expectations. Maybe you can share your knowledge about negotiation in general. Possibly in a series of videos since it is a complex subject. Cheers.

Have been in an interview process for a company over the last week, and I followed the advice Bill provided. Thankfully, all the interviews have been over the phone, or online, so have been able to totally script my answers. I took the effort to test run my pre-written answers so I felt comfortable by not sounding I was reading a script, and ensured I was within a set time for each answer. I had literally every question asked that Bill had videos on including my salary expectations. I gave the range, and now, 5 interviews later I am hopeful to get the offer. Having then this video posted today is fantastic timing (for me) so THANK YOU BILL!! So, from personal experience, Bill is totally correct. Great You tube channel

Nice vid. Looking forward to the series. The salary range for the role I recently took was like 70k-130k on LinkedIn .. I didn’t want to sell myself short but didn’t want to be wayyy out of the park when I responded to a desired range (post interview, pre offer letter). It was a funny semi-awkward negotiation (from my perspective). I was already a contractor so the negotiation was happening over our chat and I basically danced around providing a range ie “yes I have a range in mind, I’m not sure how it compares to the grade level and role here..I’m open to seeing what is offered and taking it from there” It was complete stalemate in chat until she threw out a range first and then I provided my range. I’m very happy with my salary but I think I could’ve gotten more IF I knew what I was doing.

Many thanks for that video. It's logical and simple at sight but honestly I did see that salary range as scary thing especially with the lowest border. It's always better to have some bad offers with you than none. Having an offer doesn't push you to accept it, there is always an option to reject. And it's convinient to have some offers to negotiate with another employer and convince them by telling that you already have another offer.

Using time pressure in negotiation always works a charm. I like the way you went at this topic, will definitely apply it. In the past I think I've been a little less strategic, I usually go with thanks for the offer. Then say I'm going to have to think about it not sure about the salary. Then I let it marinade until they call back, at such a point. I say hey was planning to call you back etc, is there any way we can update the salary without mentioning numbers which pushes things out.

Love your videos! Here is my tricky situation: Before the covid I was selected for a job (around March 2020), but the pandemic hit and they called up that it will be postponed, but we will keep in touch. They actually called me one time about how I am doing in the lockdown. Now its 10 months later and the same company found me (through linkedin just like before), but a different recruiter if I am interested in a job. Should I call up my previous contact? I do have a job, its just getting a little 'boring', so I wouldnt mind the change.
