I'm going to give you the best answer (from a former CEO).
This is the best way I've ever seen to answer this question.
There is a big difference between what you learn in business school, and what you need to know in the real world - just ask any startup founder or business owner! My goal is to focus on the real-world aspects of business, giving practical tips and tricks that are not usually covered in school.
This channel is a platform to help entrepreneurs and business owners succeed. It is also to help the world at large to be more effective and successful. The world can certainly use more inspiring leaders, more successful entrepreneurs, and more capable managers - that is what I would like to help bring about.
Who Am I?
I am a practicing management consultant, former CEO, and entrepreneur. I have led many businesses to success, as well as several startups. Among other things, I have an engineering degree, a master's degree in finance, and a master black belt in lean six sigma.
I have worked across five industries, and have worked in both large enterprise and small businesses. In the last five years, I have also been mentoring startup founders and teaching business at a post-graduate level.

Yes , many companies asked me this and I always said that I don't have an exact figure I'm mind at the moment, but I would be happy if you people give me a salary that is competitive with the market

Both. The answer depends on what stage of the hiring process you are. Early? No figure. "I'd like to know more about the position and the corporate culture before answering." Late stages? Either wait for them to propose a figure (silence is your friend). If they too are comfortable with silence, then just hand out what you expected figure based on all the info you already collected from their interviews.

I remember shooting myself in the foot once when being asked this question. I had been out of the workforce for awhile due to family reasons, and the market had changed a bit during my absence. The answer I gave was too low, they hired me but I soon found out that I was working too cheaply. The company regularly hired people with less experience than me for 25% more pay. I tried to rectify the situation over a period of time, the company went about half way in wage, but the damage was done and our relationship was poisoned. I ended up seeking employment elsewhere. Since then I learned to answer this question with "I am sure that what you are paying people with simular experience and job position will be fine" and it has worked out for me. After watching this though, I think I may change my tactics slightly more in line with your advice.

My old boss had a worker ask about flex time. And he responded similarly saying “oh yea we have flexible hours. You can show up any time before 8 and leave any time after 5” 😂

If you're in it for the money and not for being an asset to the company...good luck. Yeah you'll get paid. That's important. But it's a given. You gotta show interest in the job and why you should be the one chosen. Interviewer: Why do you want to work for this company? Applicant: I need money. Think that will get you hired? How about when the next person says: Because I'm highly skilled in the areas you're looking for and my experience will be a great addition to your team.

A long time ago I accepted a job for $28K, which was $6K more than I had been making. I was exciting to get it. The VP who hired me felt so bad , that I was lowballed, he gave me raises every 6 months until I was making what he thought was “ right”. I never forgot that.

I’ve been watching and practicing this video for about a month now, and used your tips almost word for word for a job I really wanted. I gave a much smaller range for my salary expectations but a range nonetheless after they said “there’s no specific range but it will depend on your experience and technical skills for this position.” Long story short, I passed the phone screen, interviewed with the hiring manager the following week, and then interviewed with 8 folks from various disciplines the week after that. A day later they gave me a great offer - they gave me the top value in my expected salary range! I just wanted to thank you for making this video and helping me respond professionally when put on the spot to give salary expectations during the initial phone screen. You’re the best, and your other videos have help me as well! Glad to be employed again!

@@vitalie96 I think if you're going to go work for a publicly traded company, or a company looking to IPO, their bottom line certainly is what matters. However, I don't feel that this is the case for all companies. Certainly they want to make money, but a lot of companies realize that valuing their employees is a much better option than trying to snag deals out of anyone that works there, which leads to high turnover and lower quality work.

Getting the top value in your range can mean you sold yourself short, If you said 40-80k and they were willing to pay 100-140 then you've just saved them 20k.

You're spot on, and it's what is really frustrating about the job market. When I was 23 and out of college, employers knew they held the power over me. When this question came up, I had to placate or get myself eliminated from a job I *needed*. Now, 20 years later with a built-up resume, I can tell someone exactly what I'm worth and if they don't want me - it's THEIR loss. It's difficult to tell younger folks to play hardball with this question because it will absolutely get them sent right out the door. Tough tightrope to walk, good advice here.

Exactly. If you really just need a job, any reasonable job, this advice makes sense. As a software developer of 10+ years I have enough leverage and knowledge to make an offer, and if they can't meet said expectations I can walk away to find someone who can. There's no point in wasting both our time interviewing if our salary expectations don't match up.

Well, unfortunately these companies are making a lot of money on high turn over with low quality control in favor of more marketing. The bosses are the number crunchers now days, so they are always going to favor paying someone much less even if they are less skilled (but skilled 'enough').

This is correct and how it should be. If its your first job you're not going to be 100% productive to the Company and you shouldn't be commanding a high salary. After a year (preferably 2), ask for a pay rise or find a new job. With experience under your belt, it should be easier to get the salary you feel you deserve. Its annoying to have these 1st year apply with unrealistic salary expectations, its a waste of time for both parties.

I was asked this just recently during the first round interview with a recruiter at a company (not the hiring manager). Fortunately, I have enough experience to know this trick and so I simply joked and said “Well, ideally more than I’m making now!” to which we both laughed. I immediately followed it up with “What does your company normally offer for this position?” Not too surprisingly, the number he came back with was significantly higher than the number I would have initially said. Never be the one to give the first number.

Sometimes I'd like to ask prospective employers the same types of messed up questions they ask applicants. I.e. "So, what would you say is the most likely reason why my paycheck might bounce? What is your worst quality? Of all the reasons you might fail, what might be the most disturbing reason why? If you could change one thing about your business that everybody around you hates what might that be?"

The problem is, interviewers game is very lame and they try to trick people out of jobs when they should be more skilled in actually hiring the right people. Then tricksters which are not necesarily good workers get the jobs saying what they need to say....

This is very true. I have a family member that is a great interview. She will say anything to get the job. She gotten jobs that she is not even close to be qualified for. It’s so hard to fire people she will skate by for 2 years then leave add that job to her resume and move to the next level. She makes a ton of money and has no skills or any idea what she is doing. It’s crazy.

Hiring, although one of HR's supposed core functions, is something they're really bad at. At least for professional positions that they don't understand very well. So they look for easy gimmicks to eliminate people to make it appear that they're useful. Long story short, HR sucks.

I've always hated this question and wanted to answer something like: "Maybe you tell me how much you're willing to pay and I'll tell you if it works for me. Since it is you who decide it anyway and I can only say yes, no, or give me more."

I think they are not only asking how much your work is worth but also an exercise or test on how confident and/or secure you are about what you do or want to do. so it's a question to set a price estimate and expectations at the same time.

During my first job search/application process in the US, I have had no idea about the salary range and no idea about market demand as well. I was a graduate student seeking doctoral degree in EE/IT. When HR called and collected info I told him my number was 50k ( that was a big number for me of course). Then I was invited to company HQ in Raleigh NC for series interviews. Towards the end of interview , my supervisor ask me the same salary expectation question ( met with 3 different groups before that). I was about to say $50K again, but ( by the grace of God) I asked him “ what is the range for this position?”. He said it is $70K-$80K annual salary. I was like “ Wow ! Can not believe that I hear “ Then I accepted $75K with $5K sign in bonus and stock options. This was 10 years ago. With limited resources to be used for the job search and interviews. I believe, nowadays, similar positions’ offer is around $110K-$130K range. At that time, I had Master Degree and almost done with doctoral degree in EE/IT from respected US State University. The position was Senior System Engineer responsible for Physical Layer design for ADSL. Time flies by !

Here in Australia, there are award rates and they can't go under, even if you say under that range. Most advertising states the salary and if you work full time or not, then it slightly changes.

During a phone interview, the person asked me what I was making in my old job. I told the person that since I am no longer there, that figure is of no consequence as I am making zero dollars right now. She accepted that answer to which I then asked what the range was. She couldn't answer. Trying to get a job is such fun. Glad I am retired and no more games.

To ask what you are specifically making is actually in violation of most HR policies and illegal in most states as it can be considered job discrimination if you’re not selected for the position. An employer however, may ask what your salary expectations are legally and within compliance.

@@kaykilla1000 It's a very common and totally "acceptable" question in India. Many times, you will even have to show proof of your previous salary. Often a new job will match or go some% above your previous salary if you are applying for something similar.

I work in landscaping and went for an interview. The advertisement sid pay was $15-20/hr. In the interview after seeing my past work from pictures and 2 training books signed by supervisors from 2 previous landscaping companies saying I've been trained in these areas, the interviewer asked me my pay rate. I said $18 because of my limited heavy equipment experience. He countered with $15. I said no way I seen the other candidates out there and I have more experience then them as we talked before wewere interviewed. I got my rate and on first day there was a sign saying we cannot talk about pay hahaha. This company was terribly mismanaged. I quit and went back to the landscaping company I worked for before.

Why is the hiring process like this? They should be asking questions more along the lines of "are you qualified for the job?" instead of trying to play mind games to get you eliminated. They should be the ones giving a range instead of asking you for a range. I absolutely hate the hiring process. It's such a waste of time for the employer and for the job candidates.

that's the trick about interviews, say what they expect to hear but don't follow the game... most behavioral and non behavioral interviews just what to hear what they want. Get from them the info you need (mostly from the first and second recruiter before the final interview like benefits, programs for employees, private health insurance, flexibility for you to assist college and work at the same time, growth opportunities, culture and company's environment, etc.) Then use the info to manipulate what your strategy and approach will be in the interview. You can't be cocky, always humble and poised, but firm and clear on what's your expectations. Listen for red flags. If the person who will conduct your last interview doesn't give a number is a RED FLAG.

I know times are tough, but don't forget they need good talent. You are also interviewing THEM (it is a two-way process). The advice given here is spot on, but don't be afraid to walk if you're not comfortable with the process or the way they present themselves, the company, and the opportunity. And, obviously, get as much information as possible during your pre-interview research.

"As an interviewer this is good, because you eliminating a candidate who never worked out" Yeah yeah, but companies forget that it is also good for the candidate, because you as a candidate can eliminate a company which would never work out for you without wasting your own time. I really hate when companies are doing 3-4-5 round job interviews, feeding on my precious time just to get to the last round where they sturm in with the salary topic, and it turns out that they are expecting people to do that job for a quarter of the market value of the position. (But interview habits/processes ect can vary from country to country. I'm in hungary. Can speak for that practice)

@Gustavo Exactly. And a common trend i observed (especially with big companies) that they are using therms and names for positions which usually cover a specific level of profession. Just to look good on the job market, or even fool the competitors. But in reality the job itself requires a much less or smaller expertise. So they want to pay less for that position. But this is annoying for those people who are actally looking for that kind of position and wonder: "what? Why do you want to insult me with this laughable salary?" Just an example. You see a job posting at a company with "Project manager" position. Or even Senior Project Manager" with PMP or CAPM certification. You apply, they are impressed with you because you fit all the requirements, and than it turns out: 1. they want to give you a salary just a tiny bit above of a 2nd level service desk agent, and/or 2. the job itself is literally just about writing meeting minutes for projects which could have been a simple change. No wonder they salary was so low. But than for love of god, why the hell posting such a position? So i think there are much more things on the human ressource market which companies have to finally learn, than the other way around.

I agree. I used to answer the question exactly as explained in the video. But lately I actually started providing numbers in the very beginning as it helped me to eliminate the companies that aren't willing to pay enough. I would say this is a great advice for people seeking junior or middle level positions, but for the senior types it could lead to a waste of time.

@@Drac0Ater Just make sure that, if you're giving numbers, never undersell yourself. Always say higher than you want. If you go a bit too high for them (not outrageously high), you'll still be able to have a discussion in most cases. If you go lower than what they would have offered you, they'll gladly pay the lower and you've screwed yourself out of money. Just make sure you have your information on what would be a good salary for that position, and make sure you can justify why you'd be on the upper end of the scale.

Good thing too, you cannot be friends with employee as they almost always abuse it. Only rational choice is to distance yourself from them as may be required to put them on their place, yell at them for failing task or even kicking them from the job. I’ve answered this question multiple times and have always been paid on the higher side of the pay band. My usual statement is: “my salary expectations are dependent on a number of factors including a full understanding of the job description, current market rate within the city for a similar role within the same industry, and I’d also like to highlight that I have a wide range of qualifications that can help bring greater value to the role and the organization than other candidates”. It’s always put me in a position where I’ve been offered more or I’ve had the opportunity to negotiate for more money and benefits/perks.

This question gets me eliminated. I had some post-interview chats with HR and they laid that out to me pretty clearly, which was fantastic of them to do so. I've also interviewed with the same organization several times and 100% confirm that they are using the question to eliminate. No point in looking at Ferraris if you have a ford ranger budget.

Having been on both sides of the interview process(tho never discussing salary) this is GOLD!!!!! Job interviews are like a secret language that everyone excepts is the game you play. Do NOT treat it like a normal conversation. You are not friends. You are trying to get the job at the highest rate possible, they are trying to hire someone who will fill the job needs at the lowest rate possible...these are conflicting goals :)

My current job had me do a 90 min interview including a math test, psychological evaluation, colour blindness test and computer skills test. All this in one sitting and with 20 yrs in the field. I did get the job though so it was worth the effort.

Had an interview with a company my buddy recommended me for and one of the first questions the interviewer asked me was salary expectations. Fortunately, my buddy told me the company pays on the low end(around 65k) and I knew the entry level pay range for a more renowned company would be 70k base. So I told her 70k base and she obviously took this as a tough answer as prior to offering me a position she asked me how important was the salary expectation I asked for. Told her not crucial but another company offered me "a good amount" so when she sent the offer letter it was around 71-72k. I think the moral of the story is know your worth and bet on yourself because even though I didn't accept their offer, they went out of their way to pull some strings and offer me more than normal.

Got a phone interview yesterday and was asked what is my salary expectations. I followed your 1st and 2nd tips and the HR person ended up telling me the salary range which was about what I wanted. I told her that range was acceptable. She told me to expect a call for an in person interview. Thanks for the tip. Subscribed.

This is good advice. I would add that it’s worth telling them that fit is more important to you than compensation, and what you’re really looking for is a great fit. They love hearing that.

@@alexflores4458 I believe that “being a fit” means that you are, in fact, a fitting candidate for the position in question, as in “the perfect man for the job”. It indicates that you’re not intending to leech off your potential employer, but you rather seek a job, where your skill set and experience would actually be valuable, where you would, in fact, enjoy the work you do without grinding too hard. Occupying a fitting position immensely helps you develop as a person, as a valuable employee, and also helps the company you work for prosper. In other words, being a fit is a win-win situation.

By “fit” I mean you want a job that is a good match for you, so say something like this: “Of course compensation is important, but what is most important to me is finding a job where I can be very useful, add lots of value, grow my skills and advance my career in the long term. Finding an organization where my skills and career goals match the organization’s needs and direction is more important to me than compensation.” This is what employers want to hear, and it’s how I always answer the “compensation” question, along with a range that I would find acceptable. It works well for me. I hope that helps explain. Let me know if it doesn’t.

I was up for a great position and when asked the question, I answered honestly. My minimum was my base salary of my last job and my “magic” number was 2K less what I made the previous year. The SVP said it was in the range, said he wanted to hire me and said he’s sending my information to HR. This was a few weeks ago before the holiday. Even decided on a start week. Thank God I didn’t give my notice as I wait for the written offer. I had to chase these people down just to hear my salary wasn’t in their range. I think it’s completely unprofessional for an employer to ghost you, hoping you’d just go away.

I just wished companies would always publish salary ranges, it's a big waste of my time to go through the application, call back, interview, offer stages and at one of these stages find out their just interested in offering a low or even a non-competitive salary: if I'd know this about them at the get go I'd skip them and save mine and their time.

True story..I followed this advice a couple of days ago and the employer laugh saying “gosh I wasn’t expecting that question”😂 and I was able to obtain the lower to higher salary numbers based on experience according to her😉 Anyway I made it to the second interview which is today in a few hours!🙏🏽🥰 Thanks for this awesome videos👏🏼

Today I had another interview. Since I started watching your videos I actually realised the mistakes I made in the past, the salary question was definitely one of them. Today they asked me about my salary expectations, so I said "I understand this is an approved position, may I ask if there's an approved salary?". The guy said "this is a very good question" (😁😁) but then he prompted me to give a range anyway. So I gave a very low to very high range like you said, like 20k to 45k (based on my location, skills and experience - unfortunately in this area salaries are not super high). But then he asked me - again! - for a more specific range! I tried to keep it wide enough, giving some sort of "core range" but insisting on the fact that anything in the range I indicated initially would work for me. We'll see what happens... but your videos are helping me so much! Thanks :)

I think in a lot of cases this trick question is forcing the candidate to sell himself/herself short. I think this is an important reason they do that as well.

Interesting point. Some companies could be weeding out these who do not know their value. But my most recent experience it seemed like they wanted the most qualifications for the least money, taking advantage of job scarcity to bully people into working for less. Needless to say I didn't even get an offer lol

I remember when companies tried to poached me and ask for a price, I always tell them I bringing XXXX amount working with this company what are you going offer me to give me reason to leave my job and work for you? Some time I hear them laugh what I bringing in and told me they wouldn't pay me that price or anything that will improve my skills, I tell them thank you for your time with this interview but I don't see a challenge or benefit that will improve myself as a person to be best at my career. Feels great when I'm in control of the interview and not them.

I wanted to comment and say I have actually used the technique I learned here on two separate occasions with recruiters who pressed for salary info, and it works brilliantly. In one case it never progressed past question #2, and the recruiter actually disclosed the salary range for the position which allowed ME to eliminate the opportunity from my consideration.

As a corporate recruiter asking this is always part of my initial conversation. We should absolutely know the range for the role AND be willing to share that range. It is meant to make sure we're in the same ballpark, but I would never let a few thousand dollars prevent me from moving someone forward if they were qualified. I always strive to be as transparent about salary, benefits, time off, bonus potential, etc. However, if someone is asking 25-50K more than we have budgeted, I don't want to waste anyone's time if neither side can be flexible. My job is not to get the most experience for the cheapest salary. If anything, that is a detriment to the company and those on the team already working for us.

I live in a developing country and due to the poor salaries and lack of good opportunities for young people we tend to rush at any given chance of working. My friends would stare at me like some arrogant douchebag for saying that If an employer doesn't show what they're paying I don't even bother calling them. Thankfully most of the time it seems this is the best thing to do. The video is also great, no long dillydallying, straight to the point informative and easy to understand!

Another question to ask is "what is included in the total compensation?" which drives at more than just the base salary, assuming your role could have a variable compensation element or bonus eligibility element. This is important to understand since the base salary may be below what you're looking for but with the variable or bonus compensation may be significantly higher.

I had a first round interview today, and they asked this specific question. I replied with question 2 about the approved salary range for the position. The interviewer gave me the range and asked if it was acceptable, to which I replied that it was. Great advice and I'm glad to hear it's pretty close to what I've intuitively been using. I always refrained from being the first mentioning a number, because then I feel I'm putting myself in a weak spot. The last time I applied for a salaried position I worked around giving an exact answer by mentioning "I need to know more about the position before I can tell you that" during the phone interview. Then I asked for a range when they prompted me again during the first interview. Initially, they weren't willing to mention the range, but then when I prompted them and they did share the range, I found out that the lowest figure in that range was 50% above my expectations. I felt great when I landed that well-paid job!

As a hiring manager, I use the "why are you interested in this position and company" as an opening to get a feel for the candidate's preconceived understandings and expectations of the role. I get a lot of applicants that look good on paper, but don't understand the actual responsibilities of the role, so this question helps frame the rest of the conversation.
