my instructor taught me in a diesel, always made me set off with clutch alone, I knew that petrol cars required more finesse. he obviously wanted to save time not teaching me coordination. I got my own car 3 months deep into lessons and it was a 1.6 petrol focus and it really helped me get some skill and control. it made lessons easier and when my test came around I was able to apply the techniques I learned in my own car and with my instructor. I'm glad I passed like a week before my test I messed up at a ridiculously steep hill junction and my instructor came in and took the clutch off me but he didn't give enough bite, and I ended up burning the clutch to get out of the junction. he made out as if it was me who should get the clutch up higher, which was impossible as I took my foot completely off the pedal as I felt him take it. he had no confidence in me doing my test early, soon proved him wrong getting a first-time pass with 0 minors, suck it mark.

@@abbieking5017 your doing right having some private practice. as for your instructor telling you to stop doing it, that is what we call none of their business and they don't have exclusive right to teach you, its you giving them money to learn anything beyond the lesson is all you. it seems driving instructors avoid teaching people in petrol cars as it requires more finesse all the time where as in a diesel the pupil can mess up largely and most times pull it off., where as petrol cars will most of the time result in a stall which can put people off. anyway i wish you the best with your lessons!

I once saw a learner stall 5 times in a row. She stalled when parallel parking on an incline but the examiner was okay with it. She went "sorry sorry sorry" and started the car in second gear when she slowed down and hadn't downshifted or put it in neutral. Naturally enough the car stalled, again, and again, and again. He said "We're done." and she broke down in tears. That was brutal to watch, wanted to yell to put it in neutral but I thought it was best not to.

Thanks for the tip about not having to stop the car after stalling while moving. I am inexperienced, a learner driver, and I had this happen to me the other day. I had a cyclist in front, and wanted to overtake, but realised a roundabout was coming up, so changed my mind. I'm in 4th gear, and broke to keep a safe distance from the cyclist, but forgot to change down. So I stalled the car (in 4th), but stayed in control of the car and immediately put it into 1st, restarted the car and continued on into the roundabout (the traffic behind wouldn't have even known I'd stalled). I was impressed with my control and calmness in the situation, but then started doubting whether I had done the right thing, and what a driving examiner would have thought of what I did. This video has made me realise I probably did it right. And great videos, great channel, thank you!

Small tips: 1. When you change gear to first, and you holding leg on clutch, car will change sound from lower pitch to higher and when you feel you are going forward, just freeze leg. I suppose thats left leg or you are alien with more legs. And when you start to move, gently pull out leg from pedal and hold a little bit acceleration. Thats to prevent stalling. 2. But if you are at some hill, you gotta change gear to first first, and then hold gass around 1500 RPM and freeze, and gently go from clutch pedal.

I passed my driving test back in Sep 2019 where I drove an A class 180D which was my instructors car and i never use to stall and when I did i couldn't even tell if I stalled or not as there was no jumping effect all that happened was the engine turned off and all i had to do was put my clutch in and the engine started no turning the key business. but anyhow 2 weeks ago I brought my first car from dealer a 1 liter petrol VW POLO and honestly all I do is stall especially at traffic light. Honestly Pin this video is really helped me alot and all your other videos. Keep up the good work. Honestly you are helping people out alot especially those who have passed their driving test.

I’m the same! My driving instructors car I never stalled even being a petrol because it could take some lift of the clutch before gas was needed. Now I’ve got a VW Golf which is the same as what I learnt in but just an older model and now it takes almost no clutch movement before it needs gas or I’ve stalled. Cherry Berry not sure exactly how many it was more a case of as and when my dad was available and willing to take me out, everyone will learn at there own pace. Just focus on what your struggling with. I used to go out for about an hour or two each time have a casual drive on roads that aren’t too busy find a nice flat car park with plenty of free spaces for practicing parking when your getting the hang of it then you can start to challenge yourself. The main thing I can tell you is don’t rush it too much it will all come together eventually just stay confident and don’t get disheartened if things aren’t progressing as fast as you would like them to. Built up areas and busier roads will be a little stressful at first but you soon get used to them. (All the best and good luck!)

thanks for this pin. i started stalling later into my lessons because there were points that were just too overwhelming for little old me lol. stalling just added to the pressure, but i also found that focusing on recovering helped to clear my head up because i was thinking about just one thing. i once stopped and started in third gear diesel without stalling - god bless...something took pity on me that day. i feel a lot more comfortable recovering from stalling thanks to your video. youre the best pin.

I was taught to put the car in neutral, and pull the handbrake after a stall, but the 2 times I stalled in my own car, I just put the clutch and brake down before turning the engine off and on again. As long as I don't roll back, there isn't a reason to panic because it won't help.

All my driving instructors have said the car moves forward only clutch-release, no throttle required, and the car in which i practiced before a driving test(with an instructor) used to move forward with only clutch release. But the car which we own requires a gas to move forward, and clutch release simply stalls the car. Only you were the one to acknowledge this fact, thank you. Great tutorial.

I watched many videos but this video actually helped me not stall at the light or stop sign. I was stalling so much I wanted to give the car back to Carvana! I was so frustrated because I had everything else down ( gear shifting & down shifting) I practiced clutch control after watching video and I have NOT stalled at a light or stop sign since!! Now a shopping center parking lot was a different story but I need to remember to be in first gear so I won’t stall the car. I have owned my manual transmission for 27 days now. 44 years old and never drove a manual in my life until now. I wanted to learn and purchasing a manual would force me to learn. It’s definitely all about muscle memory. Thank You again for this video

@@anthonygraham6503 exactly. They usually have you holding the bite without the brake to get people to learn the points. I highly doubt *any* instructor will teach heel and toe. A lot of people still think it's a "racing technique"... Then wonder why everything they do is jerky.

This helped me a lot, I stalled so many times today my check engine light came on with only 60 miles on the dash (Nissan issues). After walking back inside ashamed, I watched 5 minutes of this video and ended up driving 20 minutes straight with total confidence. It was simply a combination of me letting the clutch off too fast and not giving enough gas. Once I let off the clutch slowly, I realized where the bite point was and where to give it gas. Thank you kind sir, my clutch thanks you as well.

Great video. Driven auto all my life and prepping to switch to manual next year for a performance car. I have been tossing around the “gas first, then ease off clutch” theory in my head for forever since I can’t practice. No one ever teaches it that way but in my opinion a bulletproof way to learn manual, since finding the clutch bite point is not the easiest thing to do for beginners. Glad an instructor validated my thoughts today. Cheers!

The thing that got me with stalling is that every car is different with this. My instructor's car I got the hang of no problem, but when I tried to practice in my parent's car I stalled like 10 times in a row. For their car, you have to really PRESS the gas for it to take, whereas is you did that in my instructor's car it would shoot forward at high speed. It's like every car you get in you have to semi-learn how to drive all over again.

I think the reason instructors teach to use the hand brake when stalling is because on a lot of cars have vacuum brake boosters that quickly lose pressure when the engine is off. That means that if you mess up your timing or fail to turn the engine on in time - you might gragually lose control of brakes and start to roll.
