Thank you to many of you who like my video and offer suggestions on how you clean your filters. The most popular comment is to use the dishwasher instead. I believe if you have a dishwasher (may not be common outside the US) and your filter is relatively clean, you can put the filter in the dishwasher and clean it. However, given how dirty my filter was, I was hesitate to use it in the dishwasher. Here is why: 1. I am not sure whether my dishwasher will clean it throughly. My dishwasher is not great. Many times residual sticks to my other dishes, and then I will have to run the washer again. Given the filter was very “sticky to touch”, I would rather not have the sticky old oil on my dishes. It’s much easier to clean one pan with the sticky oil than run my dishes again in the dishwasher. The method shown allows me to monitor and make sure the filter is clean throughly. 2. I am not sure how it may clog the pipe in the future. If you use my method, I suggest let the waste water cool down, pour it into the a closed container (e.g. milk jug), and put it into the garbage. Clogged pipe is expensive and to fix it is a big hassle to your day-to-day life. The second most popular comment is to toss it and get a new one. While $15-$20 is affordable to many, I am no Jeff Bezos. :) I’d rather save money and put it in ETF, or buy flower to my significant other. Cheers! :)

On Amazon replacement filters are less than $15 for 4. I am not a rich person by any means. But $15 a year vs cleaning the damn things...I'm all in for the spend.

This is a good method if you have a fairly small filter like you do. Mine is too large to fit into even a jumbo frying pan. It's even too big to fit into the sink. I ended up soaking it in a large plastic tub, in hot soapy water with bleach added to break up the grease. A good rinsing and it was good to go.

1. Your dishwasher will clean it thoroughly, even with just hot tap water and no detergent. I know this from experience. Part of the dishwasher's magic is mixing the oils in the water, and yes, the water does actually absorb the oil a bit. The reason that this doesn't happen with food, is that we don't stand there and blend it for 20-40 minutes. If you put detergent in there, then it is even better. If you clean the filters often, like every week or month, or just after heavy use, then you'll not need to worry about clogging, because there is too little each time. The other part of the dishwasher's magic is letting the oil sit at the top of the water until it gets absorbed or mixed with detergent. This allows the water to sucked from the bottom and sprayed above. This cycle traps the oils at the top of the pool of water. 2. A lot of oil/grease on its own will clog, or at least start to accumulate, but detergent handles that just fine. As proof, place an oily filter or dish in the dishwasher as normal, but be sure to add a prewash with no detergent. After the prewash has been running for about 2-5 minutes with warm water, pause the program, then let the water stop dripping, then open the dishwasher, and then run your finger over various surfaces. You'll see that they are squeaky. At this point, everything is filthy, but it is squeaky, which means that the oils are not a problem.

@L98fiero 7 ай бұрын
@@eugenetswong No part of the dishwashers magic is dissolving the oils, it's closer to emulsifying them but another part is that the dishwasher detergents have high ph that will dissolve aluminum, and that's what the filter is made of. It won't dissolve the filter in one wash cycle, but it will take a bit more of the anodized off each time, and then the deterioration will be faster.

i have a rental property and i use naphtha to clean my hood and filters. Naphtha is very flammable so don't use it around flames. it is also pretty cheap at the box stores. it's also good to clean wood kitchen cabinets. i have been using this for 15 years and after a move out it takes me about 10 min to clean a hood and 15-20 to clean the cabinets. it doesn't damage the finish on the cabinets. in fact it makes them look better. got his info from a second generation furniture re finisher friend of mine.
