Makes a lot of sense guys.Last lesson I had for the driver didn't go to plan. Had to get a new shaft first so while that was being ordered I was told to practice hitting a five iron as I was coming over the top. Out of my six lessons I only had two which were all about the driver. I wish I had seen this before I spent a load of cash for a swing that is still over the top lol.

Love the knowledge. This truly shows the "science" of playing good golf vs better/great golf. Most players do not think of playing this way and it shows. Since I've been following this channel it has changed my approach to playing and it's helped a ton. You can't just walk up and colbber every shot like in this driver to wedge or driver to iron approach example. It's all about playing to YOUR strengths.

I recently replaced my Callaway XR Driver for a Taylormade SLDR mini driver as I was happy to lose distance for finding more fairways. The difference has been amazing. I play off 23 and more often than not hit in the early to mid 90s. Since making the swap last month I have hit between 84 and 89.

Agree 100% I’d rather be hitting a shorter club into the green, however, how about difference between autumn/winter (scrubby, muddy, manky lies in the rough) vs spring/summer (when greenkeepers are able to keep rough more consistent)? Would you still rather risk hitting an 8i from a scrubby lie in the rough over a 6i from the middle of the fairway? How much of course management includes adapting to seasonal changes and how much do amateurs get that wrong?

The 7 iron comment resonates with me but it’s not a clear cut thing either. I am that soldier that can have a card with 8-10 pars but with 5-6 blanks at the same time. The blanks are exclusively down to the tee shots. My good ones are 250 out there but my missed could be 45 degrees straight right or a savage hook to the left. I’ve had various lessons over the years trying to fix my driving with teachers that DID actually let me hit driver during the lesson. None of this ever really “stuck”. However I recently discovered someone that took a look at my driving and decided there was no point working on it without fixing some basic technique problems so we started back at the seven iron. Initially I was a bit disappointed in this as I thought my irons were good and if I was in the fairway I would usually score on a hole. However as time has gone on I’ve seen the benefits. I’m actually building a “proper” golf swing and both my irons and driver are benefitting. I really hope to make a severe dent in my handicap this year. So not disagreeing with it but for some people it might make sense to start back at the start!

For me, straighter will win first. But that's because I put myself into worlds if trouble off the tee and spend the rest of the hole playing catch up. If I can get reasonably straight then the extra distance will definitely be a massive help 👍👍

A 160 out not the best place to be 5 or 6 times a round will make it tough to break 80. Mark you’ve made your point consistently over the years it’s always about club path, delivery and angle of attack.

When i take this approach i seem to gain 1 or 2 strokes on a couple of holes, but then cost myself 7 or 8 strokes on others, couple of 3 off the tees, couple of chip outs sideways from the trees etc. So whilst i know you've been pushing this approach for ages and i understand your point, for me strokes lost seems a more important consideration than strokes gained. Also, my putting is the weakest part of my game (despite all sorts of lessons) and so being 5 feet away with a wedge is much the same as 15 feet away with an 8 iron, i would still expect to two put both. Put it this way, i would only call one of coaches shots a genuine birdie chance and that still wasnylt a dead cert!

That was awesome brahs... that video was made for me. I play off 10 usually low to high 80's... i hit my irons well with good distance, chip and putt OK tbh. Where i struggle is the driver!!! Its my achilles heel. I struggle with the transition from irons to Driver. Do have a bit of long term back injury and just tend to take away inside and come down to steep. When it works its a 300 yards bombs, when it doesn't... its a lottery and can be in any direction. might even top it it 100yds and more often than not toe it 200 etc... but if i pull it from the bag it costs me 3 to 4 shots a round. On the positive side. i know where my weaknesses are, it could be worse :-)

In my own stat keeping, I can say 100% that if you want to lower your scores, you need to get your tee shots in play. Hitting it further and further off-line isn't going to lower your scores. You need to get the ball in play off the tee.

Here's another idea... play from the correct tees for your ability level. Seems everyone at my club thinks they have to play from the championship (1 up from pro) tees. If you ask them how far their driver goes, most say 210-225 yards! Bruh, unless you're driver goes at least 250, play from the regular men's tees!

I find this interesting. I have a different approach to par 5s as a 3 wood can get me in the FW, then a 5 iron and then pitch still has me on GIR. However, par 4s I can agree with driver for each hole where you can’t get a PW - 9 iron for approach. What do people think about par 5s?
@Matthew-of9sp
@Matthew-of9sp 4 жыл бұрын
Not all par 5’s are created equally. I think the best advice is to mentally play the hole backwards. Start with the easiest spot on the green to make 5-15 foot putt. Then think about the easiest shot to get to that zone, might be a chip from just short right of the green or it might be a 9 iron from the left side of the fairway, depending on the undulations and hazards as well as angles. Then figure out how to get the ball to that spot in as few shots as possible. Sometimes that means going for the green in two, sometimes it means laying back off the tee so that you have a comfortable lay up. Working backwards and keeping your strengths in mind while looking for the easiest angles that suit your skillset is the best way to attack the hole. Though this strategy is applicable to all holes it’s most critical to do this on the par 5’s because there is more room to make mental mistakes and get off the easiest track. jmho
@joshuamclean6241
@joshuamclean6241 4 жыл бұрын
Matthew 28:18 - I agree with everything you said. I do believe more amateur golfers would score better if they didn’t take drivers off on par 5s. 3 wood, 3 wood would get most amateurs in a range of 8 iron or less into the green

When I was struggling to break 80, it compounding my mistakes. Bad drive, maybe blocked out or maybe chipping out. Instead I would some bubba type recovery I had never practiced which always ends up going through the fairway or left in the trouble areas. Then I would let anger take the wheel. Head off you would say. Course management could annihilate a solid round at any time.
@jporter504
@jporter504 4 жыл бұрын
I can tell you exactly the major difference between me hovering around 80 and you when you are playing scratch, par level golf. You gain a stroke or two by hitting two more greens in regulation. You gain three or four strokes with your play just off the green. Finally, you make more puts, especially at the 6 to 10 feet range. Your putting inside 15 feet is amazing. Your putting stroke and your ability to read the greens.

Yes Gary Player and others mention that the 2nd shot is crucial and stop worrying on length at the same time it shouldn't be a taboo topic. Same goes for Mark's "driving" capabilities 😁 ... did I hear hime blame "windows" 😋

Concur, it’s all about using a higher lofted club to get you onto the green, so you can stop it sooner, instead of throwing it on with a hybrid etc, as it’ll run out, which then you’ll three or two putt more, eventually brining your putting average to fewer strokes per round thus getting your handicap down

I'm with you Julia. My coach, when we have lessons on the course, will have me T off from the "Beginners" (Ladies) T's. She calls them the Beginners T's. The course that I go to there has a Par 5 that is 534 yards from the white T's probably where a guy should T from BUT she has me T off from the Gold T's that is just 421 yards. Before the lesson I was asked what I have a problem with and I said Driver. I didn't get any real help with it so I guess I need to try another golf course and a different Pro. ????

I went for lessons because the miss with my driver was a big right. Spent 3 lessons swinging a 7i slowly and gave up. Pointless. I’ve learnt far more on this channel about club delivery than those “lessons” and have taught myself how to not swing massively down and left by shallowing the club and dropping my hands down in front of my thighs rather than throwing them out (“over the top”). I hit it straight to a slight draw now, and longer, with the added bonus that I can cut it if I need to because I remember the feeling from when I used to slice it.

As someone that usually shoots in the mid 80s to mid 90s I would say my problems have almost nothing to do with distance. I say almost because yes I am going to be more accurate with the shorter irons, but I would say most of my problems are the result of not consistently hitting good shots. On any given shot I can hit it perfectly straight, chunk it, hook it, slice it, top it, or who knows what else with just about every club in the bag. I also have days where my putting makes it feel like the hole is 5 times bigger and days where I can't make a putt to save my life. I only golf usually about once a week and try to get to the range/practice green one more time a week, don't usually spend any time warming up before a round, and usually not playing pristine courses either. All of these factors, I would say are the reason I don't play better, not because I don't hit it 20 yards further. That doesn't even account for the beer being drank during the round either.

Now I realise why a 7 iron is the only club I can hit well. I’m going to ask for a refund from my local pro - and compensation for the wear to the grooves and grip on my 7 iron. 👍🏻

so true, unless i pushed a lesson it was always with a 7, or sometimes a putter. Never a driver and i would never push a coach as like a doctor, i go with what they say as they are the experts. Now, doctor driver please

Give us more vids relating to plus 18 handicappers. This is too technical for the average golfers.

I thought this was relevant for all levels. closer to the green means a shorter club which SHOULD equate to lower scores. how do you get closer? hit better drives. How do you do that? work with a coach to optimize. If you need help with driver and the coach wants you to hit 7 iron speak up you're the paying customer. If they aren't comfortable get a new coach. Do that plus spend time around the greens chipping/putting and I would bet you wouldn't be a 18+ for long.
