So you're driving along a 4x4 track and discover a large, muddy puddle. Do you hit it and hope, drive around it, or do something else? All explained here.
WARNING: if you are looking for lots of high-speed muddy wheelspin action don't waste your time watching this. My offroading is track-friendly, not overly dramatised for the camera.

As an inexperienced (but not ignorant) off-road-vehicle driver, I can easily see that this is excellent content because it is informative, unbiased and has no superlatives in it. The lack of exaggeration makes your work incredibly valuable. Thank you.

Such a valuable contribution to your viewers Robert. Thanks mate, very well done. When you said your forgot to turn on the camera (for the prep before taking a shot at the bog), I thought you meant the whole thing going through the bog! That was a worry for a moment!! The bit you did about preparing (that you forgot to film on the day) was excellent information. Again, Robert you are a star!

Great video, Robert! Greetings from Texas. I really had to laugh when the video cut from the mud hole to you sitting in the vehicle explaining that you forgot to press "record" on the camera. That sounds like something that *I* would do. :) Keep up the great work, love your content.

Excellent video Robert! Love the term "track forensics". Really teaches you a process in thinking clearly and patiently with regard to mud. You brought things to the table that many wouldn't consider. Thanks for sharing!👍👍

Glad it was helpful! I first used the term "track forensics" at least 15 years ago when I was doing a lot of 4x4 instructing. The students seemed to 'get it' - analyse the track to gain information for your own drive.

Excellent info throughout! I knew about using a stick to check for depth and bottom softness (...lol) but I hadn't thought about entry/exit angle or even the height of the center between the ruts. Thanks for pointing out what I was clearly overlooking!

Great video, although the actual passing of the obsticle/water hole was a little disapointing, I was hoping it was deeper. but you have to do the "leg work" to get the safe passage! well done!

Stinging remark about Jeeps traveling in convoy. New Jeep owner. Did a lot of four wheeling in my youth. Was shocked to learn about the Jeep culture of trail riding with a multitude of Jeeps. It's like bringing traffic congestion into the woods with you. I don't get it. I bought a four-wheel drive to get away from the crowd which is part of the reason I'm watching your videos for the necessity to be self-sufficient on the trail.

excellent video, once again people also tend to be afraid of the water, but the water is usually a sign for hard soil. can you please explain what is the problem reversing in low range?

yes - the diffs are weaker in reverse and you put more stress on the CVs especially uphill.

Another great video, thanks Robert. What’s your view on diff, gearbox and tranfer case breathers? What do you run in your Ranger? Given that the manufacturers wading depth is 700mm, do you think extending the factory breathers is necessary? Thanks.

Yes to breathers, more important the more mud/water you do. I haven't extended mine.
