I am fortunate to have been raised by immigrant parents. I think they became very good at observing. I’m grateful that I was able to be observant of them and learn a few things. Your teachings pick up where theirs left off. The more I observe, the more I enjoy doing it. I can imagine how much work it must take in order to become as observant as the exceptional Joe Navarro. Thank you!

Very helpful! I have to practice not staring. I think I’ve always gotten most of my communication cues in an auditory way, so learning to look at people, but not stare is a real challenge! I forget to look because I’m so busy listening.

Absolutely! You can look without staring just relax the eyes. If you know what you're looking for then it makes it easier to observe.

Fun to watch 😃 I wish there was more possibilities to study body language in universities just like psychology to better understand others and improve our own messaging. Like you have mentioned it has been our way of communicating for thousands of years and still at times body language is regarded as nonsense. May I ask have you been questioned or doubted in your career about the knowledge you have of body langauge? Thank you!!

Great question. Everyone once in a while someone will question something I say and I don't mind, I always tell them I am here to convey not to convince. It is difficult to argue with thousands of observations I have catalogued in my my notebooks from doing interviews or fieldwork. As to you studying there are plenty of universities that teach nonverbals. University of Arizona has a great program. Just keep in mind no one own nonverbals, anthropologists, sociologists, neurobiologists, criminologists, all share a piece of that pie including psychologists, but many people contribute to understanding nonverbals. Go to my website and request a free bibliography, that will help. www.jnforensics.com

Hi Joe, thanks for sharing. However, I have a problem in observing people. Firstly, there are too many distractions all around. Secondly, there are too many things to see. Which make it hard to focus. Also, I have a bad short-term memory. I might miss something and possibly stare at them. This is a challenge for me.

I understand.. It's a challenge for all of us when I first started I couldn't see everything that I see now. Start by knowing the behaviors and what they more or less mean. Focus on Comfort and discomfort. Overtime as you validate behaviors you'll be able to observe them more quickly and not have to think about them and eventually you'll be able to not just read one person but a whole room of people all at the same time.

Now if only everyone actually cared about others enough to observe and communicate with people in the manner you’ve described. I’m currently taking care of an in law who doesn’t care about anyone else’s feelings but their own and it’s a lot to be around them. I am displaying so much discomfort I don’t know how they can’t see it! Rocking my feet and rubbing my hands and nails and looking away from them whenever I have to speak to them. It’s agonizing.

Sorry to hear about the situation. The fact that you are introspective enough to see and know your own body language means a lot though. Congrats on taking the time to self-educate.
