Great info! I recently processed some old agfa isopan record that I had lost in a box for nearly 30 years (when I shot it in 1992 it had already expired from 1963). It was a bear to open because it was a metal cartridge. Ended up stabbing a hole in several frames with my screwdriver. But hey, they came out. A bit light but mostly useable. I used Cinestill Df96 as that's what I had on hand.

Hi. If I have a film canister that already has shots on it from years ago (that I just came across) and now, I want to open it up, when I do this in the dark, how to I avoid the film being blown up? It eventually will hit lights - or is there a waiting period. Just trying to not destroy the photos on the negatives once I use your tricks in the video after opening it up.
@filmismorefun
@filmismorefun 9 ай бұрын
You need to have a developing tank ready and when you open the film it needs to be placed into the tank in the darkness, then you can develop the roll using chemicals. After developing it will then be safe to view the negatives in the light.

Don’t wind the film leader back into the cassette, then you don’t have to do this. Film leader retrievers are another option.
@filmismorefun
@filmismorefun 3 жыл бұрын
That's true, but some cameras automatically rewind the film at the end of the roll. 🙂

Stupid question, but I'm a film noob (sorry) If I've already photographed with the film, is it okay to open it in the light? I understand if the film is unused that being in the light will destroy the image, though if it's already been used is this still an issue? Again sorry for a kind of odd question.
@filmismorefun
@filmismorefun Жыл бұрын
No worries, it's a great question. Even after using the film it's still sensitive to light. Only after the roll has been developed can it be brought into the light. I hope that helps!

After you have peeled it open, applying pressure to the top part and from underneath, you'll be able just remove the film from the canister that way

PSA: I tried doing this with a kodak roll like the one in the video and ended up cutting my hands badly. putting pressure from underneath did not remove the top. If you don’t have the tool to open the canister at the top pry it open as much as you can like in the video. Don’t force it because it’s not likely you’ll be able to pull it off more than half way. Once it’s open you can twist the spoolie thing until the end of the negative releases. Pull it out of the opening you made and you can then load onto the reel from the spool, cutting the canister off when you’ve loaded your reel. the canister is metal and it will cut you easily (i found another similar account while researching how to get blood off the film pre-dev).

@@ClaudiaOfTheWorld probably should have explained it better, pause at around 2:08. Put pressure on the top of the spool pushing with your thumb.

I do the pry method every time and it has never failed. Granted, it ruins your chances of bulk loading, but how many people really do that?

You can buy it pre-made, but it's easy to do yourself. I have a video on how to redscale your own film here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9ufptKpp92tYZ8.html It's a cool effect, you should try it out 🙂

If the film is black and white. Can I open it in a red room?
@filmismorefun
@filmismorefun 10 ай бұрын
No, black and white film is still sensitive to red light. You need to open the canister in complete darkness. I use either a closet or a changing bag.

Jesus Christ just use vice grips with a hair more tension than the width of the cap and pry it off that way. Both of these methods are terrible and completely destroy the cassette.
