I love getting this question and I didn't realize people wanted to actually know the answers. Opening a Dental Office is one of the hardest things I've done but it's been so rewarding.
In this video I'll explain the steps needed to get the ball rolling on opening your own office. Opening any business requires proper preparation and guidance. We were lucky enough to have great mentors when we opened up our first and we still use some of those same people at our 8th office.
The tips outlined in the video are
1. Know your "Why". Try reading Simon Sinek or sitting down with yourself to realize why you are starting off on this crazy rollercoaster of a ride because it will help you get through the lows.
2. Know your numbers. Whatever industry you are in requires you to take a good look at numbers. For us we look at Dentist to Population ratios. Your real estate/commercial broker can help you with this.
3. Get a great Broker you can trust. Without someone who knows the industry and area well you will not succeed. Or you may succeed but damn it's hard. Having someone who has been there done that helps a lot. Also they don't cost you anything so you have nothing to lose.
4. Time your LOI and Lease negotiations properly. As you are signing your lease you should have everything else in place such as floor plans, general contractors, equipment people, financing etc so that when the clock starts you are read to move.
As always please leave questions and comments below and connect with us and subscribe for weekly videos about anything business and dental!

Hello I'm a D1 dental student right now and I was curious if you had any advice for job opportunities for dental students when they graduate? Currently I want to work for someone else for a few years then purchase my own practice.

Great video! I am currently shadowing an orthodontist and think it is super interesting! I recently read that the 2019 average for private practice orthodontists is around 400k. Do you think this is an accurate average for a private practice orthodontist or do you think there are too many factors to say? Thanks!

Hi, I am considering going into to the field of orthodontics as I am a senior in high school. However I am slightly concerned due to the costs and length of dental school and residency. I was wondering if you would consider the time and loans spent in college worth it on the other side? I just do not want to be repaying debt my entire life.

Hey Ethan. Absolutely worth every penny and every second. Love Orthodontics and everything that comes with it.

Hey Dr. Coughlin, did you have to give up on getting gp referrals when you decided to open a combo gp/ortho practice?
@ThriveDentist

Hey Waseem. I've actually never practiced in an office that relied on GP referrals so I don't know what that's like!

@@ThriveDentist question, do you find it more worth it to do dental and ortho in same building rather then just a ortho office. Seems like a lot of extra work. Your input would be nice to hear. Great video!

What are some benefits of opening several dental offices?
@ThriveDentist
@ThriveDentist 4 жыл бұрын
Well you get more stress so that's something😉 But in all seriousness as an Orthodontist you likely cannot be at just one office because there are not enough patients and plus I love opening offices so I do it mainly for the love of opening and working with such a diverse group of people.

One question, for all the planning that you do during the lease negotiation, like making sure you have the funding, have the builders in place ready to go, etc. Do you organize all that yourself or do you go to someone who has experience with that the same way you would go to a dental broker to find the perfect spot?

Definitely use professionals like a lawyer to review the lease especially for your first office.

Is being an orthodontist hard? It seems so easy but pays very well. Why is that? Is it cause of the schooling😂

Yup it's pretty easy but going through school was a pain!
