This video shows you how to open the liftgate on a 2012 Chev Chevy Chevrolet Equinox suv cuv sedan from the inside if the outside button handle pad switch doesn't work or isn't working.
On the inside of the tailgate door, there is a small round plastic cover. Remove it, and using a long flat screwdriver, push on the silver tab, rotating it forward (towards the rear of the vehicle). this tab actuates the door latch and opens the latch. Then you can open the door from the inside. It may take a few times to get it right, the door is heavy, and it's tricky to push on the silver tab, as you can see in the video. Hopefully this will help you if your button pad stops working, and you can't get the door open, at least this "last resort" can possibly help.
