Let's see... Knitting and crocheting over 50 years... Married nearly 37 years, in the same house... Definitely Maximalist! Totes in the basement and under beds in all three bedrooms. Boxes in three closets. Bags and bins waiting to be inventoried into my Ravelry stash. I love the stash feature on Ravelry, because I can sort by color, weight, yardage, fiber. So even though I have over 25 places to look, I can find a particular yarn very quickly!

As a minimalist that lives in a very small space i need to keep things very organized. I recently donated an entire bag of yarn. When i was new to crochet i would buy yarn just because i thought it was pretty, regardless of quality. I tend to try and use as much as i can before buying. For example, i'm currently making some little fish keychains for a friend who's daughter's birthday party is an ocean theme and i have a glut of pink so pink fish it is! I tend to buy less but higher quality yarns which, for me, bring me more joy 🙂

I'm a planner, but I do purchase yarns on a whim at times. When I find a pattern that I know I want to make in the near future, I will purchase the yarn and anything else I might need (zippers, buttons, embellishments), print off the pattern and store it all together in a clear plastic bin. I also have a file on my computer where I keep track of all the patterns I plan on making, along with the yarn type and color I would like to use, and any notes. I make sure to have the picture of the completed project as well - to jog the memory! Might seem over the top but it works for me. It also gives me a record of what I have made, how it turned out, and a photo of the completed project. I also note if it was a gift. If it was, I add who I gave it to so that I don't repeat a gift!!

I am a planner who could possibly pass for a hoarder. 😊 I bought lots of yarn from sheer excitement to start new projects and then filled my time with gift projects to do now. That was most of last year (all gifts). Now I’m fitting in making some things for myself. There are always gifts to be made! The hoarding part is from stocking up on Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Cotton Yarn colors that are now discontinued (the most vibrant ones!). No regrets as they make me happy every time I see them and I will happily use them all. I store mostly in tote bins to keep them safe from bugs and dust. The cottons go in a blanket bag for lack of display space. I want a better system to see them but for now it works, and no more bags of yarn strewn around the floor of the living room! It’s fun to read how people keep their yarn, and thank you for the eye candy!

My biggest problem right now is what kid of physical storage to do.dont have handyman to create a storage system nor am I handy enough to do it myself a while ago (yrs) I bought a free standing metal 6 compartment unit and have been trying to find something similar since.Went to the big box stores with no luck since I have discovered what I am really looking for is not shelving but closet organizing .Now all I have to figure out how many cubicles I need and what spacing I have Searched on the Web and have a ton of choices I think I am eclectic because I have just recently emerged from the RH worsted world to the modern yarn world.nothaving access to many retail sources I have gotten several mystery boxes and found all kinds of types of fibers and yarns but think I will probably stay loyal to the traditional yarns I have been using since starting to knit and then learning to crochet since I was 12

I’m pretty much a planner, and although I don’t need a organization system, I decided to watch this anyways 😂 And I organize my yarn by weight and color coordination. But when it comes to planning for future projects, I like to write down a list of projects I love to make over and over (since I sell my finished pieces) and the amount of yarn it needs, and I keep that list where I can see it all the time or in a place I 100% know where it is. And when I go out and buy yarn, I like to look at different types of yarn and let my imagination soar and I like to think of other projects I could make- but I have one rule while yarn shopping. Don’t buy any yarn you didn’t write down on your list! Unless you absolutely positively know you’re going to use it 🤣 Happy crocheting and knitting, y’all! 🧶❤️

My husband made new shelves for me and I got it all in order(though I know there is more in my “hoarder” garage. I usually only crochet baby blankets for friends…until I had a grandbaby 2 years ago. And another one a month ago! In researching patterns for blankets for them I fell back in love with crochet and my craft room is filling up! A skein of yarn takes up a lot more rom than a hank of floss! 🪡🧶

With you on the cross stitch supplies. I used to cross stitch, and all my floss was wound onto numbered cards that fit in two small plastic containers with dividers. It was so much easier to organize, and would all fit in a drawer! Between my fabric and my yarn I have a whole roomful! There’s so much variation in yarn weights, brands, fibres etc. that it’s much MUCH harder to organize! Im trying though! 😂

Very much in the same boat! I'm a "Jill of all trades, master of none" when it comes to crafting, having done a little bit of everything. I definitely have some hoarder tendencies, because I keep mostly all of my craft supplies even if I'm no longer actively using them, "just in case." My most recent passion is embroidery, and like you, I have a ton of those supplies. My craft room is cluttered with all sorts of various crafting materials, so I'm keeping my embroidery supplies in my bedroom for now, in a sort of controlled-chaos fashion. Organizing my crafting supplies is high on my to-do list, and now after watching so many crochet vids by Elise and other passionate folks, I've rekindled my love affair with crochet. Because I have so much in the way of embroidery flosses and fabrics (and I have a tub of 20-30 year-old yarn that I've saved from my crochet days that is filled to the brim), I'm trying VERY hard to not buy much in the way of new yarn, seeing as how it's so much more bulky than embroidery floss, and I have absolutely no place to put it. My plan is to use up as much of my old yarn as possible before buying any new, but I've already gone ahead and bought a few balls that were just too appealing to resist, cramming them into the packed-full tub and securing the stressed lid as best I could. Best laid plans and all that!

My soul wants to be a Maximalist, but practicality has made me a planner. I live in a tiny remote town in the Canadian Arctic where I have zero opportunity to shop in person for yarn. Since I need to actually FEEL a yarn, I end up planning my projects, and then when I get south to civilization, I go to town filling my wish list. Ina few years, we will be retiring and are planning on full-time RV’ing until it’s no offer feasible. Once again, I will HAVE to be a planner completely because of space constraints. I know it’s not the end of the world by any stretch, but I SO envy your crazy room! It’s something I have always wanted to have, but northern homes are built with almost monastic practicality. 🤣

I'm definitely eclectic, but mostly a collector. I'm weak, I can't help buying fancy, exotic yarns! Though a big part of my stash was inherited from a friend's grandmother. I recently sorted my stash by weight, popped some bars of soap and moisture-absorbing silica packets in each Tupperware bin and called it a day. I was so glad I did; it makes picking yarn for a project much easier. Ideally I would inventory it all on ravelry but after doing a few I just gave up. Right now, rediscovering yarn I got before marriage that has to be used up to be donated away because my husband has specific allergies and sensitivities to certain fibers who runs the risk of coming across them. According to the Clutterbug organizing types, I am a bee (visual/micro-organizing) so I am in the process of shifting my yarn stash from under the bed bins to a pretty little glass front cabinet. I still have a little too much to fit, so I rotate my stash based on fiber type (summer yarns vs winter yarns) and then by weight. Knitting and crocheting for over 40 years. I'd say I have a maximalist personality. Yarn in totes, bins, plastic drawers, under the bed, and in a pantry type cupboard. Projects are also everywhere. My bedroom doubles as my craft room. I have organized by brand, some types (Cotton, Buffalo wool and Phentex), and weights. I created Excel spreadsheets for my stash inventory and included leftovers by weighing amount and calculating yardage. I attempted to do inventory into Ravelry but don't have the patience to photograph each category in my stash. I used to buy yarn at thrift stores and yard sales in order to add to yarns already in my stash. This year I am determined not to buy unless I have to use for specific project. I joined a knitting group hoping to be inspired enough to use my stash. I am still working on UFOs issues.

Planner here! I literally have an excel spreadsheet where I type all the details of the projects, one per page, all in an index in the first page which links to each project. Organized in priority and season. I might be making some winter garment for me but if someone's birthday or special day is coming, it would have more priority and leave other projects on pause. I save money on advance for the big sales throughout the year to buy a bunch of yarn and buy it with its projects on mind. They're organized by project in transparent plastic bags because of dust and moths. I currently have 4 projects: a poncho for my boyfriend that looks like one I made a couple years ago but in grey shades. A butterfly shawl for me in white, pastel pink, lilac and baby blue. A throw blanket for the living room and a set of place mats. That's their order of priority too. A whole lot of other projects are in queue depending on when I finish the mentioned ones

When I first started crocheting about five years ago, I bought way too much yarn of all types out of enthusiasm and ignorance. I loved seeing it displayed on shelves in my office. As my skills grew and my interest honed, I realized I only wanted to do amigurumi crochet. Currently, I'm only using Paintbox DK so that's easy to sort by color. I moved the yarn from shelves to plastic bins to keep it from getting dusty and, after labeling the bins, stacked them around my work area. That way I can easily see which colors I need to order. The system is working well for the time being, at least until I go off on a tangent and only crochet coasters.

I'm finding that i love amigurumi too! I've been thinking about ordering some of the paintbox. Can you tell me how the DK compares to a more traditional worsted? Is it a bit thinner than worsted? All of the different terms can be confusing 🙂 and my Google searches don't seem to be helpful 🙂 i know that there are slight variations, even within worsted but as a whole, would you say DK is typically a little thinner?

@@sarahferguson0 I'd love to be able to answer you about the worsted, but I've never used it for amigurumi. Maybe Elise can, since she knits and crochets with different weights. I just finished making a Mario for my grandson who likes to play Super Mario and it turned out really well. Good luck with your amigurumi! I hope you have as much fun as I do with it.

@@sarahferguson0 Hi Sarah. Worsted is a heavier weight than DK. My personal opinion is that worsted works better for amigurumi because it fills the holes better. I would have to go down one or two hook sizes with DK which makes my hands hurt. Hope that helps.😊

I am definitely eclectic. I recently had to downsize due to the loss of my husband. I donated two large garbage bags of various types of yarn to the church for charity work. I kept most of my worsted and sport weight yarns. I’m in the process of organizing my “craft closet” and have organized my yarn first by weight and then by color. I use stacked milk crates to store them. During the process, I’ve found so many half done projects that i had completely forgotten about. Some I’ll finish and some I’ll pull out and add to my stash to be reinvented. It’s been a real eye-opener!

Let's see. I have a large antique basket holding all my amigurumi yarns sitting in the corner of my bedroom. Behind the door of said room are 3 tubs of random yarns, mostly 4 wt. acrylics that I dig thru every time I need something. I have a box that I keep my Soft Secret and Simply Soft yarns in on top of the tubs. In my living room is my wip and the yarns used in it, kept in an antique wooden bowl on legs that I inherited from my grandmother via my mom. I must be a bit of all the types. Great video, both fun and thought provoking.

Hi Elise. I think I'm the eclectic. I sometimes buy with a project in mind and other times I go to thrift stores to look for sport weight and fingering weight yarns for making my dolls and amigurumis. I have my yarn sorted into cottons, soft yarns, rough yarns, some brands, and others by yarn thickness.

Thank you for the great video - it's nice to see a breakdown of the different types! Love the comments as well - nice to see how other folks organize their yarns. I am definitely eclectic with a whole lot of maximalist (also allows me to supply my friends with yarn if they ever need it!). I've found making yarn categories that work for me helps with organization. it goes something like: Specialty Yarns (angora, baby alpaca, thin hand dyed something or other), Cottons, Old Standards (red heart, I love this yarn), Chunky, Velvet/Chenille yarns, and WIP yarns.

Thanks for the breakdown of yarn stash types. I'm not sure which one I am, but I know I love seeing my yarn. I sort by color, type, and weight. But, I also have lots of variegated yarns that I'm not sure where they fit. I love your shelving system. I've got to figure out how to display some of my finished work better. Right now it's all in a see through bin. You gave me some great inspiration. Thanks again.

My sister had to downsize her stash when she moved in with her partner, so she passed quite a lot of yarn to me (added to my already quite good stash lol!). There are different weights and styles, some in whole balls, some part-used. There's not really enough of each yarn for a reasonable-sized project, so I've decided to organise by colour. I've found some blanket patterns to work in the round, and I'm going to use the more interesting yarns for a centre block, then use up others of the same weight and colour palette for a wider band around it, and THEN I'll add a nice edging to finish it off and bring it all together. Just about finished my first centre panel, so I'm going to hunt through it all tomorrow to find the complimentary colours ;)

I'm probably a Minimalist/Planner mutt, but I'm also a baby crocheter (started less then 6 months ago) and live in a 1-room Appartment. I keep my tools like hooks, stitch markers, darning needle and so on in a washbag. It was way cheaper then the bags advertised for knitting/chrocheting, is very sturdy because it's made from nylon, has enough compartments for my needs and enough space to pack smaller projects like coasters or granny squares plus the yarn I'd need when I travel. The rest of my yarn I keep in cardboard boxes organized by project. Since I don't have space for more then 3 or 4 projects it keeps it neat and it was a cheap option (but I know I'd have a lot more, if I had the space). For now I keep the "next in line projects" I don't have space for yet organized in an App. It allows me to note the yarn I picked either online or in the store, the pattern, hooksize and everything else, so when I finish something and can start a new project I know what yarn I picked and where to get it. This system allowed me to start crocheting for around 35€ (yarn not included) so it's very beginner friendly.

Great video Elise, and great timing as well. My hubby and I are about to hit the road permanently travelling and I still plan on crochet and knitting as we travel, so you have got me thinking about how I will organised my small stash🤔. Luckily I am a planner so I normally buy as I need but as I am now into toy projects I have realised that I will need to keep some colours on hand. I think for me it will be working out what my favourite yarn will be for toys and sticking to that. So I will always have room and colours I need.

I'm both minimalist and planner, but: - I don't plan for the whole year, but for a month. - I do buy yarn I'm not going to immediately use if there's a sale. On rare occasions I buy a skein of yarn I fancy to treat myself. But usually I only buy what I need for my current or next project. I don't have a lot of yarn for these reasons. I do like seeing other knitters' and crocheters' stash, but I find as much joy in finishing the yarn I currently have as in buying new yarn. Also I keep a written inventory where I keeo track of everything.

I'm a planner/eclectic, I go to the store with a project and buy several different yarns/colors with the idea of doing more than one of the same project. I stopped crocheting for the last 6 years and one day I decided to organized my craft bins in the attic, so when I put all the yarns together I had 4 bins. First thing I did was decided to pick my needle back up again and to use up all the yarn before I purchased more but I didn't stick with the plan. I wanted to make a white shawl so I had to buy more yarn, I wanted a wool blend blanket so I bought more yarn. I really have no organization only bins, I put baby yarn in one bin, hat/scarf yarn in another, yarns for blankets in another, i pulled aside all my scrap/yarn that i wasn't going to use for a project and made baskets, cotton I made dish cloths, so I am using the yarn up just adding a few to it.

I started loom knitting when my best friend moved and gave me all of her looms and yarn. I quickly ran out of projects for my family and made baby blankets for everyone I knew was having a baby (including my doctor). Then I started making hats for the homeless in my area, churches, shelters, and other less fortunate people in my area. Then came my obsession, beanies. I made several beanies per day, and my wonderful husband goes to yard sales and estate sales. He bought their whole stash of yarn twice and brought home 10 jumbo trash bags of yarn. I now have a 10 X 10 room for yarn. I have an 18-hole cubbie on my wall that holds some; I have 10 huge storage bags and 5 totes, and I am starting on the huge vacuum bags for storage. I think it's now called an obsession.

I currently separate my yarn by fiber type: wool and wool blends (also alpaca) are together and cotton, linen, and silk are together. After that they are broken into yarn weight: bulky, worsted, sport, fingering, and lace. I think you are right about the personality types though, because I simply don't understand the people who think organize simply by color is a good idea unless you have a small stash or only use a single type of yarn. I rarely buy yarn without a pattern I want to use it for. My problem is that I am not a fast knitter (as a raw beginner) or crocheter, so I forget what I bought it for by the time I get to it. So my next step is to put my written yarn inventory into a digital format where I can also leave notes on what I plan to make with that yarn. It will also make it easy for me to sort my yarn supply many, many different ways.

Hi Elise, love your videos and always find some tidbit that’s useful. I am an eclectic, I think. (There’s a clue right there!) I also change my organization often-like sort by color, by weight, by fiber, etc. I think the “sort by weight” works best for me, especially since I buy yarn then come up with a project, which sends me hunting through my stash to see what I already have that will work together. Also like clear plastic 30-31 gal. Tubs to store it. All I have to do is pick up a tub and turn it around to see what’s in it. Nothing hides. These tubs fit perfectly in my 4 x 4 cubicle wall unit where I can close the doors-otherwise it’s too distracting. LOL! I could start a small yarn store. More will go in a yarn sale this year as I have learned what I really like and the rest can go. (Sorry, this got kind of long!)

My neice gave me some pointers on what has worked for her before I start working on my projects... one is an open hair pin (the kind that aren't called bobby pin), she uses them to anchor her pieces where she wants them placed... after she has balled her yarn, she uses a barrette to hold the end outside on the ball... she has also put her polyfill in a ziplock bag & then in a drawstring bag (it travels well that way).. she uses counters for rows so she can track where she is in the pattern.. she has really helped to make my project fear go away... along with your videos...

I am an eclectic.....I have a huge amount of yarn and when I moved 18 months ago I sorted it by weight in see through storage boxes.....this makes it easier if i have a project in dk or aran as I can just go and choose colours....this Summer I will be doing an update as I have more yarn to add....x

“most of us start out minimalist” oh if only LOL i think in my first two months of crochet i bought like 40 reg skeins and 20 lil ones and now its been like 4 months and i have even more there was no minimalist period for me XD but my best friend is minimalist. i could never lol. i love buying yarn (x i plan to use them all some day. i have adhd so out of sight out of mind is a big thing for me. at first i was keeping most of my yarn in my closet but that wasnt working cause i kept forgetting what i had. im using the top of a dresser that has shelves and its not the best but at least its visible and all the yarn makes me happy to look at . i still have to keep some in the closet cause i have a lot but i hope one day to get more storage space directly in my art studio so i can see every single yarn i have !! i like to sort by brand, texture, and solid/multicolor . i really love multicolor (painted style or stripes or ombre or whatever) so i have a lot of those (so many lion brand ice cream yarn - its my fav so many gorgeous color combos! ) but also quite a bit of solids. then i also have some blanket/fuzzy yarn for soft amigurumi

Combination of planner and minimalist. I organize any leftover project yarn by weight and fiber for future scrap projects. I inherited my mom's yarn stash after her passing in 2015, and it was very overwhelming to deal with a wall of yarn. Accomplished that as of November 2022. Very nice to be back to my previous ways and buying yarn again.

I was a minimalist until all the craft stores shut down during the pandemic. As soon as they opened back up, I started stocking up on all the yarn and now it's become a problem! Trying to go back to the minimalist days lol

I am a planner/collector. I collect yarn and my 4 Billy bookcases hold all my hand dyed which take up a good healthy 90% of my stash. The acrylics are all in totes. I am such a yarn lover I am building a Yarnatopia Studio just for my channel and crafting oasis. My secret is EVERYthing gets logged into Ravelry with photos, everything is weighted and my queue is used for my to make projects and the yarn I plan to use for those projects is linked. All my patterns books, mags etc are logged into my Ravelry for easy searching and my book cases are sorted by weight, color and if they are tied to a project. I am an organizing freak and to be honest when I see something out of place it stresses me. I also track all my projects on Ravelry and its fun to see what one yarn I may have added into my scrappy projects when I have leftovers. I will say I WAS an eclectic but all the acrylic I know I would never use I donated and it was 4 trash bags full that held 33 gallons!! It was so nice letting it go and now the only acrylics I have are ones I know I will use and that are a nice quality.
