As a young depressive man, this sermon came to me in the right time, like Elijah i have prayed so many times for my end, but of course God never do that... I noticed that in my worst moment's, i not only never lose faith but make me look more of the gospel, i am completely in dispair, but nothing will stop my faith in God, thanks for the sermon

I don't know if this will help or not. I hope it does. I went through depression during my late teens and early 20's. For me, God had to create a different mindset and help me overcome the depression. He did not deliver me from the depression; he delivered me through it. I'm 39 and have not struggled with depression for over 15 years. It is hard to face these things, but once you conquer them with God, that enemy no longer troubles you. His Grace is always sufficient.

Elijah was not a coward. He did the right thing, in that he distanced himself from Ahab and his wife. The threat here is real that is a clear and present danger, posed by Jezebel. It is plausible, that Elijah is unsure why God granted the great victory at Mt. Carmel, and yet the evil rulers remained. This is one indication, that we are dealing here with real people and real events (not some man-made fiction). Awesome, how God comes through for Elijah. Listening out for God's quiet whisper, is our calling, too, as belivers. God bless you and keep you. Pastor John

Thank you pastor Gavin. I've been following your channel for a while now and appreciate the high quality content you faithfully prepare and present. One thing that stuck out to me in this sermon was how often we as Christians neglect taking care of ourselves. This is something I've been battling with - finding a healthy balance between time with God, learning about Him, regular work, family and relaxation. Your words have encouraged me greatly. May the Lord bless this endeavour.

God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness to us all. Even as we are faced with our toughest battles. I’m a single mom raising my two children with special needs. I’m overwhelmed at times because they are all I have. I recently started homeschooling my sons because they were having so many issues in school including bullying. So my hours to work are limited. Every month I’m struggling, struggling to pay rent, struggling buying groceries, struggling to do it all. Yet God gives me strength. He will provide I have faith.

I needed this. And because of your previous sermon, I have been able to recognize ravens. I have been traveling a long road of sadness and loneliness for a few years now. Yet God is teaching me, ever affirming his presence and assurance of his purpose and care. I appreciate your work and love listening to your quiet, thoughtful way of sharing the work you have done and the treasure you’ve mined. This was a lovely, uplifting, and encouraging sermon, Dr Ortlund! I just want to thank you for taking your time to bring us spiritually uplifting words and I pray that God also keeps you and your family in his loving embrace. I learned quite a few new points from this sermon and you drawing from other commentaries and it has given me a deeper perspective of Elijah! Thank you and God bless you and everyone watching and reading the comments! Also your daughter's set up was so cute! I'm a writer. I know the discouragement which comes from success. I'll finish a book and go, "Huh, that's it. I'm done with that." There's always another story to write. Sometimes they don't work out, but others go well. I'm glad to know it's not just me who can feel that way.

26:10 -- Dr. Richard Elliott Friedman posits that the Hebrew should not be translated literally as, "still small voice" (quiet small sound), but dynamically as, "utter silence." Thus, he posits after all this big loud noise, Elijah is struck by... absolutely nothing. And then Elijah realises that God is in the utter silence, and then the tension is broken, "What are you even doing here, Elijah?"

Thank you very much for this extremely relevant and pastoral reflection. I was curious what you think about the issue of help often being disdained by the individual and by those around them - for example you mentioned getting counseling at one point in a fairly offhand manor, so I assume you do not feel any stigma against it, but for younger people, especially single young men, I think there is a significant, but relatively hidden aversion to therapy. Many will pay lip-service to it being a good thing and voice their support for therapy, but when it comes down to it, they don't respect people who go to get therapy. Women have no desire to go out with men who are so weak as to need therapy. Men don't see a guy who "needed therapy" as being quite as reliable or worth spending time with.

Rather than seeing what happened as God ‘firing’ Elijah, I rather speculate it as a merciful retirement. Elijah had reached his wit’s end and God says, alright, let’s set up your replacement, and reassure you that all isn’t lost in Israel

Straight up? I can't relate. I have an issue where I struggle to care deeply about much of anything. I don't typically have goals. I've lived my whole life essentially day to day. Sometimes I'll prepare for something for a few weeks or months, but I've never had any kind of long-term aim. There really aren't any major lows, but no highs either. So, I don't have troubles as discussed in the video, but I have my own set, I guess.

I'm glad that you're communicating. As a former Christian, I know that most Christians [especially men] are afraid to tell people about their depression. Depression tends to amplify feelings of fear, shame, & guilt. When depressed you feel guilty, even when you haven't done anything wrong.
