Fear is caused from attachment. People get attached to ideas, outcomes, desires etc. “attachment desire” is fear based. Buddhists have known this forever. It’s really that simple, detach from the outcome and do the “act” voluntarily for the experience itself.

So is it possible to pursue a bigger goal while still adhering to this mindset? The answer would be 'just focus on the act'?

@@siris615 I wonder if the military knew about this long before recent research did. Green Berets, for instance, seem more brainy than SEALs in a sense, so maybe their training is super stressful on the brain, causing a bunch of new wiring to form, so they’re elite at taking over governments or something.

Well, what he explained here is the primate and lower species reactions to fear. What separates the human species from lower primates is our ability to deliver an inhibitory peptide into the limbic system (fear center of the brain) and basically sedate that area of the brain. Which then allows our higher developed brain to logically and or creatively strategize a plan of action (conscious response). Lower species are not capable of such brain activity.

how to do that for instance when having fear of approaching a woman?
@babynugget706
@babynugget706 10 ай бұрын
@@awle easy answer but hard to actually execute: simply exposure. Confronting the fear. Having said that there's different "levels" to the goal of getting over the fear of approaching women. For example level 1 could be conceptualized as just showing up. Ie. You arrive at a setting with a deliberate intention of approaching women to get over that fear. By initially just showing up you will trigger a stress response. The stress response will get increasingly stronger the closer you get to that fear, ie. Actually eventually approaching the girl and saying words. But speaking to her can be broken down to levels 2-3. The whole point of splitting it up into levels is you can break the stress response into several smaller stress responses instead of a large one which would probably be extremely unmanageable. Just showing up will stress you out. But if you do it enough that is exposure and eventually your body will adapt assuming nothing bad happens and in this situation nothing bad will happen by just showing up. However you need to actually experience the experience for your nervous system to adapt and know this. No amount of reading or thinking will fix this issue because it is a feeling based response heavily tied to your nervous system and reptilian part of your brain. You simply have to go through the motions and get bio feedback so your body truly knows things will be okay. So practice level 1 first. When you've noticed that you're no longer as stressed as you were initially, ie. The stress response has died down and you feel more calm now, that's your signal to move to level 2. Approach the girl and be okay screwing up. Even at level 2 there's ways to split things up just for the sake of exposure. A good example is just saying hello as you pass by a girl without even trying to start a convo. Another would be then to ask for the time. As your body adapts and basically signals to you that these perceived scary experiences aren't as bad as you've imagined, the stress response will die down. Move to level 3, trying to start a convo. Then maybe Level 4, ask for her number. This is how you'd theoretically build tolerance to this fear through controlled exposure training. You could alternatively just throw yourself into the deep end as well by just skipping to level 4, but I wouldn't recommend it because screwing up and being rejected without having a lot of new exposure experiences might actually make you even more afraid. Once bitten, twice shy type of response. Biting off too much in the beginning might also de-incentivize you from doing it again due to doubling of the fear of you're rejected, or be too many unknown factors that can cause a more uncontrollable fear response. The method I'm suggesting is basically isolating and training almost individual factors, one at a time, so once you get over the fear of all of one isolated thing, it makes the next thing a bit easier. Hope this was helpful. This method can be used for anything btw. Exposure is indeed the cure to fear as Huberman has explained. The crazy thing is you can master this ability and truly triumph. You'll know so one day when you can ask a girl's number out with confidence, without stuttering, being nervous etc. But every guy who has gotten to that point had to overcome the initial fears and screw up a lot. If you can embrace failing and not internalize it and mixing it with your own identity you will go far in life. Because a man who doesn't fear failure will inventively move closer to success with every iteration and micro adjustment they learn from it.

So the specific answer to the question: "How do you overcome fear?" - might be forcing oneself to act in the face of exposure to incrementally increasing stressors?

If we speak of fear from a psychological perspective, not existential, its remarkable how important it seems to be to face the demons within. To plunge into your own darkness. What i mean, the ego has to be killed at least to some extension and one must stop bullshiting oneself. Projecting our shadow on others and the discomfort we experience from it (the fear of ourselves basically) leads to conflict inside and outside of ourselves and i would say in worst case, even start wars. Agression also loves to step in as defender of the fearful (i suppose the fight reaction in freeze, fight or flight) which causes so much suffering in the world. Psycho analysis should be mandatory in schools or at least before having kids to finally end this viscious circle... 😉

Lex, I would love to hear Andrew Huberman discuss the trainer/scuba diver Ken Peters who survived a killer whale attack ("Kasatka") in the movie "Blackfish". It was terrifying to watch. He was so highly trained that he was able to control his vital signs in order to conserve oxygen, I guess. Did you see "Blackfish"? There are quite a few terrifying scenes in the movie. Nightmarish, really. Your clips of sharks VR made me remember "Blackfish".

I was born with extreme fear. Allow yourself to safely and gradually build up tolerance to the feeling of terror. Afraid of the dark? Sit in a dark basement for incrementally increasing times. Afraid of cold dark water? Practice jumping in with support and safety measures. Surrender fully to panic, and like playing dead with a bear, it might just leave you alone. Good luck! I believe in you.
