I _loved_ Kate's metaphor about an unpolished story being like a house that just needs a few repairs! I also love to hear you ladies echoing what my lovely therapist has told me many times: that changing your internal dialogue, shifting your self-talk from negativity to positivity, is (A) super important, (B) a process that takes a long time and a lot of practice (the word she likes to use is "intentionality"), and (C) something that eventually becomes psychological muscle memory the more you work at it.

Listening to this helped begin to ease my self doubt and perfectionism. I feel like I can return to my novel with a more open attitude. I needed that. I've been so blocked from writing and it's exactly the reason you two said - judgment. I really want to drop judgment and comparison.

most of the time i indulge into self doubt bcs of others.. i really value others opnions - and that's good. but somethimes, i feel what i've done isn't right as they have a different opnion than me. a few months ago, i was feeling really proud of my writing.. and i actually-finally-told my father about my story, and my ideas and all that.. and he said many writers have already done the same things.. had the same ideas. mine wasn't any different.. and bcs of this, i've not been able to write for months now. i keep procrastinating writing as i feel it's not worth my time. i felt i should just listen to my father and focus on studies.. thanks to this video, i know what to do now. you guys really helped😊 thankyou so much

Aaaaah, I soooo needed this. Not only for my story writing but with my lyric writing too, just got hit with major self-doubt as I'm on a search for a new music producer, was feeling embarrassed to share what I have with people I'm just meeting who've been doing this longer than me. But yes, I do have unique perspectives & ways I want to create songs, & I've found it to be a very fun way of self-expression. Been subscribed to Abbie's channel for a while, yet only now watching this video, but it was perfect timing 🙌🏽 I'm so grateful to you both 💝

It's so interesting that this came up now! I recently wrote about this exact topic (the article isn't out yet, supposed to come out early next month), as a critique of the "muse" or "muses". New and seasoned writers alike sometimes need a remember that they are unique and that they are in charge of their own creative trajectory. I just finished filming it and will be uploading the video this week. Thanks again for the great conversation! Always nice to listen to and hear both of your perspectives.

I agree with You Guys to an extent, but it's okay to not do things so conventionally. Because I think that's where people are messing up, like for example, the way I have conquered self-doubt -- is I PRETEND that My Screenplays I write (for my movies or cartoons) is illegal: doing video vlogs on how nothing but death is gonna stop me. Now clearly it's not actually illegal, but I love to fervently plot out plans to quote "commit" pages at my job, discussing with myself how I'm gonna write the pages "without getting caught." It sounds weird, but it motivates you like no one's business! And it's book writing for god sakes! No one's gonna find out you're writing it! See what I'm doing here? Besides, you can't get discouraged if it's quote "illegal", or already wrong. Clearly it's not, but you get my point. But personally for me, it's gonna take something very serious to get me to stop or slow down, that, or something life threatening.

thanks for this video, it was super helpful. i'm the process of writing my book and self doubt certainty always lingers there in my mind. i have all these questions, what if my book takes too long to write? what if no one likes my book? what if my book does not sell well? what if original story idea is not good enough? all these questions can overwhelm me, but is a good idea when those negative thoughts become too much is just to take time to quiet your mind and say those positive affirmations.

My writing is better than Lewis Carol, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland reads like my rough draft. My writing is better than Jules Verne, I don't need to have a dictionary handy to understand it. My writing is better than Leo Tolstoy, it won't take someone 6 years to read my book. I beat self doubt by simply not caring what other people think. I expect to sell no copies, therefor, I'm fairly certain to be pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed.

It can be anything. Anything at all. For me, I started with the world, then it was the characters, then the plot. But for you, it can be in any order. It's not how you start out, it's how you finish. I wouldn't worry about genre. Genre is so vague and nebulous. Just go with the flow. If it leans towards one thing, but also goes to another, let it. There's no right or wrong answer.

I have a notebook that I write ideas in. As I think of things I add to it, until there's enough idea there to make a story. You don't even really need enough for an entire story. Just enough to get started writing.

I have indeed been having the problem where I think my story is too similar to another, like it’s not even funny how much I accidentally get VERY “inspired” by something I’m in a small community and I want to make my story in that community but the story that’s the most popular in the whole community is the one I was accidentally inspired off of and that’s so annoying bc I’m scared that people will think I copied them One of the characters I made has the exact same internal conflict as a character from that series, he also has pretty much the same role and worst of all I almost gave him a name EXTREMELY SIMILAR The name of the popular character was PART OF my character’s name, I only noticed how they were similar in all those ways bc I was trying to find him a nickname and noticed that part of the name 😭 The theme is the same, plot is the same too Basically the plot is a character that is afraid to be themselves but becomes friends with a group of outcasts and in the end stops being friends with their toxic friends to be with the outcasted group instead That’s an exact description of both the series it’s inspired off of and my series- ITS LITERALLY THE SAME PLOT AND IDK WHAT TO DO BC MY FRIENDS MADE SOME CHARACTERS IN IT SO I CANT JUST STOP WRITING IT BUT IDK HOW TO CHANGE IT so like yeah anyway- somebody help pls

This was helpful but I struggle with the fact that eventually someone will have to judge your work, decide if they think it's good enough to be greenlit or published and will reject or option you - which I think is worse cause they can leave you waiting your whole life - so ultimately someone is a judge of your work - so how can you not be scared of that.
@sunflower-ducks
@sunflower-ducks Жыл бұрын
I think it could be helpful to keep in mind that literally every published story was rejected once, twice, ten times, dozens of times before it ever saw the light of day. Stories that we now consider to be masterpieces were initially judged negatively and turned down by a publisher- _Harry Potter_ is a great example. It's just one of the hard realities of being an author that your work is going to be rejected at least once or twice before being greenlit. The important thing is that a single rejection, or even a dozen rejections, is not an indictment of the quality or importance of your work; it just means that that particular publisher didn't think it was the right story for _them_ to be publishing, or maybe they didn't feel the story was being put out into the world at the right time (which has no bearing on whether or not it might be considered more timely in the future).

@@sunflower-ducks This! It's not a judgement of *your work*, just its fit for a specific publisher/entity. You can publish it at any time and take control over the timeline and amount of attention given to its success.

I don't agree with advice that says it's not a judgment of your work, and you won't be scared of it... We DO put out our work for judgment, and you SHOULD be scared. We all should be. But the key thing is: You can take it! One or two rejections or bad reviews are not the end of your writing career. It can be the beginning, and you can learn from the feedback. You can deal with a little bit of fear. Or even a lot of it! Don't let it stop you.
