I grab every type of information in Spanish as possible. My favorite is music. Spanish is the only music that I listen too. Immersion just like a child is key. New words, write down. Listening, reading, and writing will equate to speaking at the right opporunites. Children that learn their native tongue have no fear and will speak with what information they have of the language. Corrections will happen if needed by the reciever and improvements will be the results. Embrace the child like mentality of learning a language.

When listening to Spanish, focus on listening to hear words instead of trying to know what they are saying. Being that Spanish speakers blend their words together (as we do in English when we are having regular conversations) you have to train your ears to focus on hearing words...even if you don't know what the words are. The more you read, your ears will start hearing words and phrases you've learned. Don't force yourself to follow what is being said. Eventually you will hear words and understand most of the words and phrases and follow the whole story or conversation. I saw some of Stephen Krashen's speeches and talks. Him and Steve Kaufman are the reason why I read everyday to improve my Spanish. At work, I listen to about 2+ hours of Spanish.

It took me several years to learn to speak French fluently. I primarily learned through having a conversation one a week for 1 hour mistakes and all. It was all about building up courage. Today, I can easily speak French for one hour or more. This time, I am taking on Spanish entirely through this method of consumption.

I keep my tv on the Spanish channel. I listened as i do other things (passive listening) other times i watch with captions, other times i watch without captions. Sometimes i write words down to look up. He's right content is essential lots of it. Im a rapper so i listen to Spanish rap as im reading lyrics on my other phone. I listen to the song over and over until i can get a good understanding. Spanish is definitely a fight and a dance. Thanks hermano!

Thanks for the inspiration! I’ve been waiting on my breakthrough for a while. I needed to hear this. I been taking Spanish more or less since 2021 inconsistently. The last 5 months literally everyday though. 4 days a week 2-3 hours of listening/watching but I feel I’m still not getting it. Plus I try to practice speaking but as everyone else says the natives tend to reply in English or it’s like they don’t have time and it’s discouraging because it’s like I’m not saying something correctly or maybe they’re just too busy. Or not interested. Necesito ayuda!! I was challenged by a Spanish speaking friend to become basic conversational by the end of November. Acepto. They speak but I still don’t understand so I use google translate. How do I ween myself off of that? Thanks 🙏🏽

Funny the comment at 4:00 about trying to speak after having a few drinks. One day I was at home had probably 3 or 4 beers. Said ah screw it im gonna go on iTalki and do a simple chat with someone. Got along great with this dude and it obviously came out easier, did not feel tense at all and was laughing most of the time. Probably made more mistakes but was way more fluent anyway, im sure the same message got across at the end of the day.

Watching your videos for a bit now, but I need your help. I know alot of words, my accent is very good, I still struggle with the masculine feminine thing, my spanish is not proper, but I know enough to eventually communicate what I'm trying to. What I need help with, is, I can speak decent broken spanish, but, I CANT UNDERSTAND IT WHEN SPOKEN TO ME. It's so frustrating, I can pick out a word here and there, but so many Hispanics talk so fast. Especially Cuban's, Hondurans, elsavadorians. For example, in english, we dont pronounciate "I AM GOING TO THE STORE" speaking each word clearly. We say " AMANA GO TO THE STORE" We run the words together, I believe the same things is done in spanish. I'm listening for crystal clear words. Anyways, why can I speak Spanish tend time better than I can understand it???? So frustrating.

Hi Rocky. I am just starting my journey to try and learn Spanish. I have an approach I wanted to run past you. I am in my 40's now and grew up as a kid watching movies. I am the kinda guy who could watch the same movie 100 times rather than watch 100 different movies (don't ask me why! lol). As part of my journey of trying to learn Spanish I hit upon the idea of watching some of my favourite movies on DVD with the Spanish Audio and English subtitles (I know DVD's are old fashioned, but many DVD's provide these options). Is that an approach that could tick the boxes of what you are suggesting? As these are movies that I am familiar with, could it mean faster progress than if it was content I was unfamiliar with? I almost know the scripts of some of them!

Yes, I'm a younger guy, but I love learning languages. The first one I learned is spanish, and I'm doing portuguese right now. Yes, this method is extremely good, and is worth your time, please do it, constantly rewatching it will ingrain how to say something, what something may mean, or just work well as a refresher.

I was learning Spanish for 15yrs when I had a property in Spain, I was happy with my level by the end, then twelve years ago I moved to Colombia, and felt that I was back to square one. I married a Colombiana, she speaks English, but our language of choice is Spanish, none of her family speak English, so all gatherings are in Spanish. At 65 I find learning hard, I know I'm not fluent, even though, family, friends and neighbours say my spanish is good. I know I can make myself understood, but my problem has always been verb tenses. I can get by, but I want to get better, and that is why I have signed up to SSF. Last resort? I hope not, but I've tried a lot of other options, and as a Pensioner my budget is limited... Here's hoping! Thanks.

@@ProfRogers Because I have 20+ years of self taught Spanish, these courses are helping speed me up, I am a little upset at the price paid, when the translations are not 100% accurate, which in my mind, for beginners, is a big deal. however, I am getting more from the YT videos.

@@ExpatPhil thanks for your response Phil. Is the translation inaccuracies due to Ricky’s Puerto Rican Spanish.
@ExpatPhil
@ExpatPhil 11 ай бұрын
@@ProfRogers Could be... I have messaged about the 'inaccuracies', but was told it had the same meaning, even though in some cases, the words were in a different order. That's fine if you already have some knowledge, but a true beginner relies on accuracy, or at least I believe so. Having said that, SSF is certainly one of the better options available.

What if you have a speech impediment or are intimidated to speak because you stutter. I stutter too much in English and have a heavy southern accent. All I can do is understand 😅😅😅 people can tell you understand Spanish when you lean in listen to what people are saying. So if you understand but aren't confident to speak, don't make it obvious and make it look like you're listening 😆😆😆get asked Entiendes? All the time😁don't know what to say but understand

personally for me if i’m listening to something too advanced, it doesn’t really help me at all. i think it’s better to start with easier stuff, then move on to more difficult. or if you know the words, but the speed is too high then maybe if youre on youtube try to slow down the video
