How To Oxidize Your Sterling Silver Jewelry At Home (Short Version)

Those who know me know that mixing metals is one of my signature aesthetics. I just adore the way that the dark, matte silver pairs with bright gold.
To achieve the darkened look, we purposefully oxidize sterling silver in our studio to create the gorgeously distinctive and stunning surface treatment that you see in so many CMD designs. Over time this dark black will fade to a beautiful antiqued patina. This more subtle style of oxidation happens to silver naturally over time as it’s exposed to oxygen - you’ve probably seen it happen with some silver pieces of your own over the years. Luckily, sterling silver can easily be polished or cleaned to prevent tarnish if this isn't the aesthetic you're going for. Easy peasy. But what if you like the bolder look? I'm so with you. easily can be oxidized by putting in a mashed boiled eggs. It blackens completely. Then rub thoroughly with dry soft cloth. Then place it in salt water for some time. Then clean it with toothpaste without using brushes. Just gently with fingers.

I need you in my life to bro do that to my collectable coins before I send them to get graded haha.. would this be noticeable as I did it on my own? Or would it look more like natural toning? If not then I guess I’ll have to put it in the sun and ground for a few months haha.

I’ve never heard of liver of sulphur. But I have seen videos oxidizing silver with eggs.

Boiling eggs are going to do the same "trick" simply because are rich in sulfur ! ! ! so, why using toxic, smelly chemicals I do not have any idea 🤔🤔🤔

Have you tried the boiling water, aluminum foil and backing soda trick to reverse it? Is it effective?

How long does the finish last? Does ot have to be sealed? If i wear my patina silver daily it changes color

Yes, if your silver is shiny, the oxidation will also have a nice sheen to it. Does that help? :)

What do i if i only want to oxidse part of it? Or oxidise some parts more than others?. I have a ring with indented etched letters and i want those indents oxidised more than the rest of the ring so they stand out

Try "painting" on the oxidation and then use a fine grit sand paper to remove the oxidation from the parts that you would like to keep silver. I hope this helps!

Hi there, I'm not entirely sure as we only use solid sterling silver. My guess is not since it might have other alloys in it . Might be worth trying (?). I wish I had more info for you.

We suggest using a liquid dip or paste polish then cleaning it up with a polishing cloth. Or, try a very fine (finer than 800 grit) sanding sponge. Let us know how that works for you!
