Dom explains how he packed his gear for hiking 700 km of the Australian Alps Walking Track for ultimate organisation. A backpack packed efficiently makes for a smooth and enjoyable trek, especially when you are spending days at a time on the trail.

Fold pad flat at bottom of pack then put sleeping bag on top . Makes for more room in pack from my experience.

Very good video. This is almost exactly how I packed for the South Coast Track in Southern Tasmania. One thing I learned was that it is a good idea to pack your food up into individual bags for each day. That way you just pack out the bag for that day in the front pocket.

Finally a how to pack stuff. I play tetras every morning when I'm out hiking. I see atleast 4 ways il be changing my packing style thanks to this. Cheers mate. Il be apply this to the nz te araroa trail in the up coming spring.

Good tips. Not stuffing your sleeping bag / quilt into into a stuff sack - gonna try that vs compressing it into a rock hard ball the size of a grapefruit. I also like the idea of using your puffy as a pillow in combo with that pillow case stuff sack. Will try that although I really like my Exped air pillow.

What did your pack weigh fully loaded with food and water?

Hey Ben, my base weight was 5.5kg, food was ~850g/day (4-5 day carries) and I usually carried 1-2L of water (up to 5L at some sections though). So fully packed would be 11-12kg and drop about a kilo each day until I reached my next food drop. I guess the average total over the trip would be around 8kg.
