Your level of up-close detail is so helpful. Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate and describe those details. Seeing the many layers to accomplish realistic skin color is a rare treat.

So helpful! I did a split screen on my iPad Pro, watching you tube on the left side and taking notes on the right! Betsy Conway

I like the way you detail the eyes because some artists just plant some color with the end of their finger and that is basically it. I know it takes longer but our eyes mean so much and I am not trying to put other artists down but the detail endears me more to a closer likeness. Well done.🤗

It's like being back stage with a brilliant magician and learning all her secrets. Very grateful for your willingness to share. It looks as though, and as is the case with all art forms, a magnificent result is all a matter of control. And a masterful eye, of course.

I love the art work at the start of this video Emma, if I am not mistaken that is David and Goliath in the background, our Belfast David and Goliath that is from Harland And Wolff. I love it so much because my Grannie and Granda lived in Newtownbreada Belfast and when I would stay over, in my bedroom that was pretty much the view from the window and at night I loved it. Brings back so many wonderful memories and I guess that is why we love art so much, it has that power to evoke such emotions. Amazing tutorial Emma and love your work.

Thank you for the lovely comments! I too lived in Newtownbreda so we both experienced the exact same view I bet. My old studio overlooked this view and was a source of inspiration for a few paintings! If you check out my website the piece is called 'Going Home' as each day the crows flew out towards the harbour in the morning and back past our window at sundown. Art can indeed evoke emotion, especially when the place means a lot to you.

Emma Colbert Art wow that is incredible what a small world, an awesome artist who’s work I adore loved in the same area as my grandparents, they actually lived in 54 Breada Drive, almost at the top of the hill and their house was right on the corner , unfortunately they are no longer with us so they won’t mind me putting out their address... I hope lol. I’ll check out your site again cause I never know what I want for Christmas or birthday as I’m happy with what I have, but I think I will have to drop plenty of hints to my wife for a print or something of your beautiful painting. Of course all your paintings are beautiful but that one just really pulls at my heart strings.

You're amazing!!! I'm thinking about getting into pastels. Just new to color. Its nerve racking. Not like pencil where you can just remove it

That's the fun of pastel, being a little looser and applying blocks of colour in one go. Great thing is if you use a proper pastel paper where you can add more layers, you don't have to fear making mistakes. You can work over the top usually a bit like oil painting. Dark to light...good luck!
