How to Paint a Door Like a Pro.
1. If you are painting existing doors. Prep is key! Make sure to clean off the door and wipe it down a few times before painting. If there’s any dust in the grooves, your pain will collect it and it’ll cause clumps in the paint.
This one is newly hung In a renovation so it’s already primed and ready to go
2. Prep your space with a drop cloth or plastic sheet on the floor.
3. Start by removing or taping off the door handles.
TIP: The brush size is key for painting a door the bigger the brush in my experience the sloppier it can get. I like to use to bigger then a two inch brush to fit inside the grooves
4. Start first by painting in the corners (mitres) of your door bevels and pull it outwards.
You do this so that the corners don’t collect paint and drip down when you move onto the next one. Usually when this happens you don't notice until it starts to dry. That will create a blemish
It’s ok if your paint goes onto the flat surface of the door just feather it out so it doesn’t have too much paint build up when you roll
5. Continue this on all of the groves with two coats.
6. Paint the bottom of your door so when it’s rolled you don’t have to worry about getting too close to the floor
TIP: if you aren’t taping off your door knob and hardware, keep a wet rag around and paint all the way up to it.Use the rag to wipe it off and you’ll have a tight painted seam
When you're all cut in. You can roll it on! Easy right? But just make sure you do your horizontal lines first for the cleanest finish. and then finish with the longest vertical lines.
Repeat this process for the second coat.
TIP: IF you are painting only one side. The swing inside should be the color of the inside of the door. And the hinge side should be the color of the front because it’s visible to the front.
