In today’s tutorial we are exploring “paintbroidery”. That's a made up word, but basically this painting was inspired by traditional embroidery work. This is part 1 of 3 videos in this tutorial series.
In this project I’ll show you how to use paint to create thick, plump, dimensional dot shapes to simulate the effect of satin stitches and french knots. We’ll also use a round canvas much like an embroidery hoop.

You can do it! The hardest parts of the painting are 1- the gradient base coat and 2 - mixing the paint. *Both are optional! This becomes 90% easier with a solid base coat and fluid paint for flat dots. You CAN DO THIS!

I love this video Rachel! I don’t have your flexible stencil, but yesterday I purchased the pdf of your flower stencil, which is a little smaller and obviously a slightly different design - I am adapting that to this video and its working well. I have already finished parts 1&2 so am eagerly awaiting part 3! Thank you so much for this. I’m saving up to put in a big order for most of your stencils, and the new tools, to come to the UK. All my 3 kids (aged 8 and 5) want to make dot art with me today - you inspire multiple generations in our home alone 😀😀

Thanks for your reply - happy to show you when its done, but i really messed up the layered base 🙁. I am mostly using a brand called Plus Color, but have ordered the Liquitex basics - and your stencils and tools (so excited!) to have another go and hopefully improve! 😀

After watching your how-to plumpy dots video and this one, thinking it's time to venture out of the fluid acrylics and get me some of that Liquitex full-body paint. Is that a multi-surface paint? Thinking glass ornaments would be a great place to get familiar with this paint. Great video, Rachel!! See you next week.

Hi Pam, this paint doesn't say that it's multi-surface so if you want to paint glass or plastic you should get MS paint. I like FolkArt and Martha Stewart brands 👍✨

You are awesome with explaining what you are working with, I do have a qt, your dotting tools, which I did look up on your site, the sizes goes up to 14, I don't see 15 or 20, what am I missing? For example, your largest is 14 (Pink). Where is the 15 and 20 that is listed on description?

So you can mix up some of the paints and they dont dry out?

I spray the paints with water and keep them in a covered palette overnight. They stay wet as long as they’re covered 👍 you could also use Saran Wrap
