How to Paint a Largemouth Bass for Taxidermy

I use a small brush and paint a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the eyes before painting and the paint wipes off easily after painting and has dried. i coat them one more time before i clear coat and wipe them off after the clear coat has dried.

Awesome!I really need to try that!All the scraping,and using a q-tip with lacquer thinner gets tedious!👍

Loved your Muskie and pike painting videos, is there by chance you could do another one of those like you did a second video with the bass?

Yes,I'm thinking of updating my muskie painting video, and doing a paint job on an artificial reproduction Largemouth Bass..Glad you like them!

Why are u pre painting the fins white that’s completely taking away the translucent look of the fin

Some of the fins have repair work.Sorry..I agree,a transparent fins looks great!I often leave the pectoral fin clear..But I'm alittle bit old school from back when they would back the fins with cardboard..The cardboard of choice used to be milk carton cardboard.lol..On the older reproductions we didn't have a choice for transparent fins,but Now they have them..Merry Christmas!

Do you keep the gills inside or no because I know they happen to rot

I keep them in,and use a good sealer before painting. Preserving the fish good helps,and I think they may have artificial gills now👍

Are you using transparent paints?

Some more transparent than others..White and orange are more opague,but the bright yellow,and gill red are more transparent..Archie Phillips taxidermy has a more opaque yellow..I tend to use lacquer based paints in Lifetone,but hear water based paints are much safer

They've got some really good wet look gloss that Mckenzie taxidermy Supply sells..Their number is 1 800 279 7985..Good luck with it!

How much would you say this cost and was this a skin or replica version of the bass?

Yes,it was a skin mount. I think I charged 8.25 an inch

Well just to let you know I went on Amazon I could see some of them but they were already painted I’m trying to find the blanks unpainted and more about like what I’m trying to find I don’t know what to say but I I couldn’t find them that catalog guy you’re talking about I don’t know who he is but if you can give me an address I’d sure appreciate that I was talk to him next

All this time i tought taxidermy not using so much paint, coz i think taxidermy is about how to preserve form and color, paint only use to fix a small part to fix a damage color, a bit funny to know you got to paint the whole body of that fish, so whats the point of taxidermy?? it Just like painting a plastic or wood "doll" (dummy).
