We all love to paint red cardinals for our Christmas cards and gifts, so let's kick off the holiday countdown with this sweet version of a pair of devoted Northern Cardinals. Madame is pretty in pink and our handsome Monsieur is suave in his red suit, complemented beautifully by the red berries on his branch.

What a beautiful couple! I have a pair of cardinals that come to my feeders. The male is a brilliant red. I just love seeing them out there. And speaking of bird feeders ... a bear got ours last night. We're supposed to take them in in the spring and not put them out until November when the bears are hibernating. I leave mine out year round. In the eight years we've been in the house, this is the first time we've had a bear. I didn't see it, but finding the feeder all busted up, torn apart and empty on the other side of the yard and the heavy hook it was hanging from bent down ... was a pretty good clue. I sure wish I had seen it. Years ago at another house we had a bear in our yard in the middle of the night. I saw that one!

Ooooh my goodness Renee, how exciting! The worst we get is buzzards! I did see a buzzard try to kill a pigeon once in front of our house but it got away! Where do you live? Sounds very interesting!

@@DianeAntoneStudio New Hampshire is in New England, the northeastern part of the US, sandwiched between Vermont and Maine. Massachusetts is to our south. NH is a mostly rural state with only a handful of "cities." The rest is all small towns. I'm about in the middle of the state near the capitol. The mountains are about an hour north of us and the ocean is an hour east of us. We ride a motorcycle, so it's nice to be in the middle of everything for day trips.

Gorgeous, my favorite bird, reminds me of my Mother who passed away, she adored cardinals!! We have tons of them at our feeders all t ear long, they are lovely in the winter snow, thank you for this tutorial!

Thanks Carolyn, appreciate your comments as always. I guess you are too far west for the cardinals, I looked at a map of the US and they are more eastern/central I think. But I bet you have other lovely birds!

I love this tutorial ❣️ I love to paint birds , but the initial sketch is a major slowdown. My husband is an expert birder and he and other birding friends like my paintings. I’ve also done lots of birding. SO, I feel that I need to have accuracy in the shapes of the overall bird, eye, beak, wings and tail and a good representation of the colors. I loved your explanation of how you did your sketches and I will really enjoy painting these birds🥰❤️

You're so right Wendy. Sometimes a fun cartoony bird is a neat thing to do, but I prefer to get the essence of the bird at least in shape and color. So glad your hubby appreciates your paintings!

Yes, it's true they don't live in the UK (or France!) but I did see them in Bermuda when I lived there. Very flashy!

Hi Denise, no, I didn't stretch that one, simply because I wasn't using a lot of water on the painting. I have two sheets stretched and drying now though, and I'll be trying them out later in the week. Today was a non-day as I have ear problems and felt really rubbish this morning. But I hope I'll be better tomorrow and I'm planning to paint a simple little candle for All Saints. All Saints on Nov 1 is a big holiday here where everyone traditionally visits and tends their family graves and takes flowers to honor those who have passed. Big church date too. I expect you have that in the states?

Nothing worse than ear issues, well there are worse things, but it does make one feel miserable. No, we do not celebrate All Saints Day here. Halloween has gone crazy here with decorating. I hide!
