Hi, I'm a long time breyer collector (2100+) in Wisconsin. The model horses you paint are beautiful!!!! Kudos to you. I like your collection display and the model horses how to videos. Back in the early 90's I painted over 100 models, the medium that I used was spray paint. When the models were dry I'd paint the eyes, manes, tails and hooves with brushes. Thank you SO much for this tutorial! I adore Roans, but with my jittery hands and ridiculous impatience I already feared I could never do a detailed Roan with the Hair by Hair method. But the Fan Brush method seems to be REALLY up my alley. I don't know about pencils, I might try to mix that with the Fan Brush method, to get a more diluted look where the roaning sits. Without this video I might not have bothered with Roans anytime soon, or at all. So thanks a ton! :')

A bit of both! It depends on the colour and the model. Often I hand paint acrylic for the face.

Do you seal after every layer of work? Then a final seal?

I only seal layers I feel need to be sealed. There are certain benefits/downfalls to sealing each layer depending on the project. The only exception is when working with pastels - as ALL those layers must be sealed.

It was a resculpted stablemate. I used a couple different bodies and pieced them together.

It looks to me like the head was of the Rearing Arabian stablemate and the body was of the thoroughbred stablemate, just with a resculpted neck to join them

The white pencils don’t stick for some reason and don’t show up great. Any ideas why?

the finish of the model must be the right consistency - if your pencil doesn't draw on an OF Breyer, it's likely the wrong type of pencil as well.

DeeJayBe Studios I got the same pencils as the ones you were using and I used an airbrush with golden highflow acrylics. I was trying to roan an area of light grey, would it be it’s just not showing up?

Light grey is not enough contrast for the white to show up on. You need a slightly darker base coat.
