Dear Mr Clark. No "splat"? I love this as well ;). I am familiar with this paper, though it is the only I have this far. It is thirsty, as you say, but stays that quite long, so there is no stress with skies, and other wide areas. I use a hairdrier to speed up the drying many times, and the paper don't ever cry for such. The surface structure is lovely for landscapes, and admits good effects for "side-brushing" and such. The backside is more smooth, and suits well for portraits. I happen to find a sale of Archer by a coincidence, when I searched for my first paper, and don't want to change. The epithet "less is more" is interesting in many situations. As an old engineer I used it long before I heard it for the first time. Find the essence, and don't complicate anything. As well as a photographer in the black and white era, I always tried to compose, and angle up the camera to get rid of as much as possible of uninteresting details, and get as close as possible. Shadowing the camera from incoming lights to directly reach the lens, Calculating exposure time, and choosing the opening for wanted sharpness depth. Calculating the developing time for the wished contrast, and many, many things. Even doing my best, it was always hazardous, and the result were seldom perfect. Later on, it was hours of work in the darkroom, to get rid of disturbant spots, and actions to feature the depth of the wanted details, and so on. Dust was the first enemy. I gave up when photo became digital. However painting amuses me, and I recently gave watercolor a chance. I went stuck immediately by the vibrancy of colors, and the possibility to Not paint everything in a photo. Full freedom of color choice, tones and everything. If I want, I can add some persons as a staffage, and lie with whatever I want. Isn't that lovely? I am glad, you tell that less is more, and to avoid overworking so often, and I will tell why: For the first I need to hear it, although I am aware of it, but nevertheless needs to hear it repeated. Many more needs to hear it. Copying a photo is not possible, and have no need, though the photo already exists. By simplificating everything from a photo to just a few percent, when painting, nothing of essence will be lost, and the watcher will be loving it, because the brain will have fun. Is not that what art really is? To let our brains have fun? Thank you for this brilliant lesson. I enjoyed every part of it, and learned a lot. My brain has fun and loves this picture.
